Excellent Truck - Buy one
4x4 x cab v-6 5spd - 20.5 overall gas mileage, good power, excellent capability off road. I have pulled 5500 lb trailer short distance with no problem or strain but I highly recommend a draw tight, no bumper pull. Interior is adequate for a 99 but I really like the 05s. Have not had one problem other than waterpump outage at 74000 miles - routine maintenance is all
LOVE IT!!!!
I have had my Tacoma for nearly two year. It is WONDERFUL. I have NEVER had ANY problem with it other than needing an oil change..Offroad it has been perfect. I was in a MAJOR accident with no injury thanks to this truck, although the airbags did no deploy..hmmmm. I have been forced to sell it and am HEARTBROKEN. When I can again afford a truck, IT WILL BE A TACOMA!!!!

Tough little truck
I have replaced the exhaust manifold, rear leaf springs, and the universal joint at the differential twice. It does not burn or leak oil. The steering gear and suspension are tighter than a friends much newer full- size domestic truck with 1/6th the miles. Manual transmission and original clutch.
Your Best Bet
Yes, it does cost a little more but it is worth every penny. This truck has not let me down in any way. From build quality to MPG it is a winner. My father has an S-10 that was purchased at the same time in 1999 and his has been in the shop 5 times. My Taco has only seen the inside of a shop for routine maintenance. By the way, get the TRD package if you can find it. Better ride, better off-road, more options.
Small gripes
I was thinking all all the things I don't like about this truck, and they were all minor. When I'm worried about things like cupholder size and take for granted the engine, transmission, etc I have to admit I'm nitpicking! My truck has 45,000 miles on it and has been in for repair.... well once something does break I'll tell you about it! (My 94 Grand Cherokee, on the other hand, is a money pit)
