Auto reviewers need something to write about. They write that the Frontier has below-average gas mileage and a cheap-looking interior. Well, I get 19-20 mpg in my 2017, which is just fine for a truck, IMO. You get better advertised mileage in a Tacoma and other models, but drive it and see why: the manufacturers hobble the transmission with sluggish response and shifting to artificially inflate mileage numbers. The Frontier has a responsive transmission and the V6 has plenty of power to get this truck off the red light. As to the cheap interior, it is a light truck not a luxury vehicle. I test drove the other models in this class of light truck and I saw nothing better. It is well better than the 2000 Ranger I used to own, and worlds better than my dad's trucks in the 1980s. If you want leather appointment and woodgrain dash, you are looking in the wrong class of vehicle. The visibility in the cab is better in the Frontier compared to the competition too, with the pillars blocking much less of the rear view. The seats are more comfortable than the Tacoma. The rear seats are a little tight, but not so tight that an adult can't sit back there and it fits a carseat, too. I don't understand the criticism of the handling, either. Once the steering is broken in, it has a good turning radius and the engine has enough power to get you through a tight curve hugging the road just fine. The factory tires could use an upgrade, though, to a Michelin or Goodyear radial. Overall, I'm very glad I purchased this vehicle and not the competition, and the price is right. UPDATE: Almost 3 years later and my opinion of this truck remains the same. It is a great deal for what you get. I've had zero problems with this truck, and it performs well. The gas mileage is a bit less, but now that I'm used to the truck my foot is a little heavier, too. I still get about 17-18 mpg combined.

The Pro 4x kicks butt!

Edmonds has this review as being a 2019 model, which is incorrect. My review is for a 2017 model, but I don’t know how to delete or change any way other than this. The Pro 4x with the luxury options offers full leather heated power adjustable seats with moonroof, roof rack, touch screen navigation, heated mirrors, great sound and true off road suspension. Strong engine and surprisingly good handling. Get the Pro 4x loaded! it doesn't cost that much more, and it's a MUCH nicer truck than the base 4x model. What I wish it had: Auto up and down on all 4 windows. At least both front windows. Only the driver’s side has auto down. No auto up.

I am writing this because of how surprised I was with the quality of the truck. I had a 2017 Tacoma which was a mistake. Don't get me wrong I have always had Tacoma's and loved them but the new model leaves a lot to be desired. This Nissan surprised me quite a bit. I have read some disappointing reviews so I tried it for myself. This truck is fast and the transmission shifts perfectly, unlike the Toyota. I will admit it doesn't get the gas mileage the Toyota got but that was because Toyota fiddled with the transmission to make it shift weirdly to try to get better gas mileage. This desert runner is smooth and looks great. I got this truck for an amazing price about $9,000 less than the Toyota. As of the date of this writing, the reliability of Nissan Frontiers outweighs the Tacoma, Colorado and Canyon. I am very happy with my purchase. Only downsize is that it is a little small.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly...

The 4.0 V6 has good get up and go for a six. 4x4 is quick to activate, although would be better with an automatic engagement mode. Seats are comfortable. I love the cleat system in the box! Always a tie down where you need it! I have had several issues. Bad sensor in the climate control that took over a year to diagnose. Made the air start blasting, even in dead of winter! Replaced a leaking valve cover, overflow tank and radiator all under 15000 miles. Taking it back because still stinks of leaking coolant. Gas mileage isn't great. I average 17. Needs to be revamped. It is behind the times on options. It is a quiet ride for a truck. The old school steering is very tight to start, making turning the wheel a workout.

A near perfect truck that LOOKS like a truck. Not trying to look like SUV or mini-van like most others. It's a reliable nice driving vehicle that I would definitely buy again. It does what it is designed to do and does it well. This truck does not disappoint...

Great truck. The truck rides and drives more like a car than a truck. The seats are very comfortable, easily adjustable and they are covered in leather. The engine is very responsive but a little thirsty for gasoline. Instruments, radio and navigation screens easily readable. Overall it is a very nice truck.

This truck has the value added pkg. Many say it's getting old..I say it's still got bells and whistles without all the electronic stuff like new vehicles. Handles great my only kinda dislike is fuel economy compared to others in class but how reliable will those other makes be with new power plant. 400 mile trip and was great. Duel zone temp was great for the trip. All in all 5 stars. Keep it simple kinda guy not high tech.

The only issue I had so far was replacing the knock sensor at 15k miles. At least it was under warranty! I read the reviews and don't agree with them. This is a great truck and about $7-8k cheaper than the competition for the same truck, just not as fancy. I replaced a 1999 ZR2 that I loved, but they don't make them anymore and the new trucks cost too much for a vehicle. Poor investment. I looked for 2 years to try and replace my ZR2, and so far I'm glad I chose the Frontier. I get 20.2 mpg and have 20k miles on it with no issues other than the knock sensor. It's a great TRUCK!

Nice Truck For The Price

I have only owned my Frontier SV 4x4 for 2 weeks and am happy with my purchase so far . The only problems i have so far is a not centered steering wheel and a minor trim fit problem in the cab . The truck seems well built and a value considering the price compared to mid size Chevy and Toyota trucks which are rated better by writers but also cost a few thousand dollars more . I have the 4.0 V6 and the mileage is less than my previous 2011 Jeep Liberty Sport with a 3.7 V6 . But the Frontier SV is bigger engine wise and weight wise so it is to be expected . A lot of writers criticize the gas mileage of the Frontier compared to similar trucks by Toyota and Chevy . But if you research it . They all have smaller engines compared to the Nissan 4.0 V6 in the Frontier . So the critics of the Frontiers poor gas mileage have made a bad comparison in my opinion . The ride is better than a lot of cars . The off road abilities i have not checked out yet . Ground clearance looks good for off road use . All in all a nice truck at a nice price . Still have the truck as of 8/7/24 and very happy with it. No major repairs, just normal wear items like brakes and tires. About 44,000 miles now. Really impressed by the lack of rust on the body for its age. I live in NYS which is the rust belt with salted roads. Never had any other brand vehicle hold this well. Another NISSAN could be in my future.

This is my second Frontier. The first was a 2009 King Cab SE that was trouble free the entire time I owned it.Since I am retiring shortly I decided on getting myself a new truck and since my first Frontier was so reliable I opted for the same truck. The fact Nissan was offering $2750 off plus the dealers incentive made this a really easy buy.The interior has a few minor differences over the 2009 but they are very slight. This truck only has 320 miles on it but the old 2009 would give me 21-24 mpg's out on the highway and around 19 in town so I am sure this one will be similar.I really like the graphite colored interior and the seats are better styled than the old 2009 version. The steering also is better than the older truck and pulling into a tight parking spot seems a lot easier in the new one.Two options my=ine came with was the plastic bedliner and the fender splash guards.I put a BAKFLIP MX4 tonneau cover on it last week. After a year of ownership I will probably do an update on the truck.

Purchased a new 2017 Nissan Frontier S model in 2018. I'm old school and wanted a no frills pick up. Have always been a GM truck person for 30+ years and have always had really good luck with them. But the new body styles with square wheel wells and smurky front ends were turning me off. So I looked at the 2017 Frontier and did some research and went and looked based on reviews. In my opinion the truck had a design appearance, elected for the extended cab since I really dont need rear seats. The stance was sharp for me but everybody is different. I was shown a 2017 S model with 21 miles on it. Was an automatic with manual windows and locks. No power seats, no tilt wheel. Just a straight forward no non-sense pick up. Took it for a short test drive and thought this might be it so I pulled the trigger and purchased. After the first 300 miles noticed the extended doors didn't feel right opening and closing. After looking a little more noticed the bolts holding the door hings were loose , after tightening up the bolts with lock tight all was fixed. Have noticed also that some push pins or plastic rivets were missing and apparently forgotten at the factory also, obviously quality control does not exist at the assembly plant. After further miles, I noticed that my OEM sunshade purchased at the Nissan dealership was sticking trying to remove it at the end of the day. A day came when I went to remove the sunshade a foam strip also came with it which was between the dash and windshield. Also noticed foam was blocking the vents on the defrost side on the dash which it looks like has shifted around. The Texas heat apparently melting the adhesive on these areas. Numerous paint chips have occurred already at 3000 miles, turning ratio absolutely blows on this pick up, inconsistent shifting of transmission, noisy ride, hands free calling blows, seats uncomfortable, black plastic already showing fading and warping at tail gate, poor gas mileage. Overall this truck really isn't designed to be a work truck and to be used all day. I will continue to have to keep an eye out for those little things that can and will turn into big things. UPDATE 10/10/19: Recent low knock came about took to dealer. Discovered a head bolt broken said it was done at assembly. Intake needed replacing also along with a couple of other items. A/C doesn't cool when in traffic. Have to turn off and wait so it can be used again. Fit & finish is very poor on this truck. Currently have 7352 miles on this truck. That's low miles for a 2017 should tell how much I dislike this truck.

The steering and parking are better than my old Dakota. The lights are brighter and the mirrors show more than my last truck. The cruise stays constant - my other truck would slow down on hills and speed up after the climb or descending a hill.

The Real Deal on the Frontier

If you want a truck-truck, this is your ride. If you want some luxury-style, lots of bells and whistles and plan to use the bed once at year to get mulch for the yard or an occasional project, nope this isn't your cup of tea. The Frontier has changed much in the way of design and alot of car professionals that you might watch on YouTube complain about it being the old kid on the block, but truth be told, good cars and trucks don't have to change much in order to get the job done, just look at the Wrangler and Tacoma, both have long history's of very minor changes. The truck is on a ladder frame, there are lots of hard plastics inside of it and it gets poor mpg. But its a truck. It suppose to get dirty, have stuff tossed in the back of it, go off roading, camping, outdoor adventuring. While lots of people will complain about it because of its age, honestly that's what appealed to me about it. It's tough, it gets the job done and it's pretty rugged. The V6 Q40 engine is a proven workhorse that Nissan has used in many of it's line up over the years, if you do the regular maintenance you'll easily get 250k out of it, just look on AutoTrader/Craigslist. The tranny is outdated, its only a 5 speed auto, they could definitely put a 6-8 speed in it, but you can also get it in a manual, dude, that's awesome! While it's not as nice as the newer styled Tacoma, it rides very similar and offers just about the same level of comfort and features, lacking a touch screen though. I bought the Frontier because of the value, price and reliability of the engine and tranny. This truck is not at the top of it's class compared to many of the competitors but one thing I've learned when researching is that most of the professional reviews liked the truck and it's capability and seemed to be impressed by it still being a truck among a newer lineup of fluff-trucks.

Very done with huge, high pickup styles. I want to reach stuff in the bed without a ladder. Plus this smaller size is functional and easy to use. Truck works except for lousy Bluetooth/electronics. I have 50,000 miles in two years and trouble free. Reliable. 17 city, 21 hiway.

It's fairly powerful - my father's Tacoma feels very sluggish compared to my truck. I've read criticisms of the ride quality but I've found it to be very smooth and comfortable. The touchscreen audio/Bluetooth system isn't the fanciest, but it was easy to figure out and works just fine. I don't do serious offroading, but it handles mud and sand quite well. It's not perfect - the driving position is fine for me because I'm short, but I can see how it might be uncomfortable for someone tall. The backseat is a bit cramped. The turning radius is indeed pretty wide, and fuel economy ain't great (though not significantly worse than similar trucks, either). The interior does indeed have much of the dreaded hard plastic....but so what? It's a truck, not a wannabe luxury car. It does the jobs I need done, and does them well, and for several thousands of dollars less than comparable trucks. Before I found mine I was looking at full size trucks and Tacomas that were several years older with double the mileage or more that would have cost me much more than what I paid for this one. For me, all the fancy electronic gizmos and gadgets that the competition has and the Frontier doesn't aren't worth all those extra thousands of dollars.

Just passed 100,000 miles on the 2018 Frontier. Outstanding vehicle, Starts, runs and drives like the day I bought it. I have replaced the tires and done basic maintenance but have had zero parts failures or functional issues of any kind. At this point, original battery, brakes, no AC service done etc. It isn't a gasoline miser at 20 MPG but the versatility, reliability and incredible performance in snow makes it the perfect truck for me.

This is the third Nissan Frontier Pro 4X (4WD, 6 cyl., automatic, King cab) that I've owned & they keep improving it. My only complaint is that they need to make more king cabs & less crew cabs. Gas mileage is great for a 4WD (19-21 MPG) & much better than full size pickups. The Pro 4X has all the bells & whitles that you'd want.

Bought my 2017 Frontier 4 x 2 V6 SV 2door new in July 2017 as a factory order and love my truck! Tacoma rejected due to recent problems and I liked Frontier had been built the same basically since 2005. Gas mileage okay if you drive it sensibly and getting 20 - 21 mpg mostly hwy. Very comfortable interior and lots of power with V6. Tail gate very heavy and turning circle could be better but I’m being picky. Very reliable and love my Fronty! Best looking midsized truck and mine is a 2 door king cab, not a 4 door crew purchased new in July 2017. Minor paint chipping after 3 years, only mild complaint. ( your list of models below doesn’t include 2 door 2x4 wheel drive SV with V6, which mine is) Only minor issue was failed windshield washer pump outside warranty and quite inexpensive to replace. Just turned 30,000 km of mostly highway driving. Applied undercoating and Krown Rust Control at new as I hate rust, though not an issue in Vancouver Island. Krowned my 99 Cherokee in Calgary each year and still no rust! Kept as our ski vehicle with 390000 km.

Was lucky to pick up a used V6 4WD Frontier SV King Cab with 6k miles on it. I've had it for 2.5 years, 35k miles and have not had a problem with it yet. I mostly use it for commuting, then use the 4WD when I'm down on the farm off-roading it. Mileage is about 18/21; to be honest I've had V6 *cars* that weren't that good. I like that it doesn't have all the electronic gewgaws the new full size trucks have. I'm an old farm lady and I just don't need that stuff. Another reviewer posted that the shifting is erratic and yes it is. This is the one thing I don't like about it. I thought it was just me being an Old Lady Driver! What I love about it is that it has the giddy-up to get me across 4 lanes of highway traffic and immediately start climbing a hill, and can get up to highway speed very quickly indeed without overstressing itself. I've made 2 long trips in it, both were comfy. I'm shortish so can't really address leg room. I've had Nissan cars for most of my driving life but this is my first Nissan truck, so here's hoping it's as reliable as most of the cars were.

Do not buy a Nissan Frontier pickup. I have owned on for less than 2 years and it has been in the shop for over 30 days. It has stranded us twice on road trips and required towing. The catalytic converters have had to be replaced 3 times. Once they replaced all four. Requested Nissan to replace truck under the "lemon laws" and they denied the requested. Offered me two free car payments. I told them I paid cash and had no payment so then they offered by 2 years free oil changes. They do not stand behind their products. Our local dealership has been great but they did not build this unreliable vehicle Nissan did. My family has owned 6 Nissans in the past but this is the last one. Please do not fall into the trap we did and buy anything from NISSAN.

It's an okay truck. You need a football field to turn around in, never seen such a huge turning radis since driving my grandfathers deuce and a half. Truck got hail damage while my other vehicles didn't, neighbors Tacoma didn't suffer damage. Nissan dealership has all vehicles under cover, Toyota dealership has them out in elements. I should have spent the extra dollars and bought a Toyota

The truck fit my needs all the way around. The full length bench seat is great. Although I made the purchase just 12 days ago, I had to use the 4x4 feature. It was great not having to spin tires in the snow to get up the hill to the house. The dealer was great. The salesman and sales manager were both up front, hiding nothing in the process. Everything they said they were working on for me was put in writing and ended up being factual. No hidden fees. I would purchase from them again.

they get you all the way up there after you drive over 2 hours and then they tell you it sold however on the website they don't mark it pending they don't mark it sold there's no sign on the truck to say that it is sold they just tell you it's sold and then want you to pay more money for more miles for another vehicle Don't waste your time

Loved the truck, the mpg was lower than the 2009 model I had and didn't have the same getup and gone. Got in an accident and learned my lesson. Hit a k-rail going 60mph near dead on and lost the front left wheel yet only the side curtain airbag on the passenger side went off!!! made no since as I didn't have a passenger in the passenger seat.

I bought the truck in October 2017. The choice, at the time, was Toyota, or Colorado. Both were about $7000.00 to $8000.00 higher. I was impressed by the ride and the towing capacity. I tow a 5X10 trailer with an ATV on it and do surveying on jobs all over Texas. Recently I retired and have 130,000 mi on it ( mostly in the 1st three years) and other than tires, I have had to replace two light bulbs on it. It drives as good as it did new and still gets around 20mpg on the highway. It is surprisingly tough as I have had to take it off road many times. No regrets.

My 2017 Nissan Frontier is a great truck. The new 2022 design is a mistake, just like the 22 Pathfinder. Too mich fluff, useability not enough.

Bought truck new in August of 2017. This is my second Frontier. I like the vehicle a great deal. I've had no problems with it, it's comfortable to drive, has plenty of power, tow a trailer well. The only thing I'd improve on, is the hard steering, turning radius.
