Great interior but missed the mark on engineering

I have a 2014 Oddy EX-l. Loved it when we bought it. Interior is much roomier and more refined compared to sienna. Fuel economy is great too. However, this is the first new Honda I had that had problems this soon. Rattle in the tailgate on rough roads. Warped rotors at under 20k miles (warranty is only for 12k), I do not drive it hard and never had this problem before. Strange Chubaka-like noise when turning in parking lots some time. Windshield wipers skipping instead smoothly swishing over the windshield (dealership replaced them but that didn't fix it). Tailgate turned out to be a little misaligned when we took it on to repair the rattle for the second time (we never did anything to it). Of course there is also the infamous kick when decelerating to about 10-15mph and stepping on gas again. No codes for that Honda reset the computer and said operation seems normal. Tires will likely need to be replaced before our 2 year safety check (at about 30k miles), because Honda put on cheap tires. I expected much higher quality from Honda. Our Accord and CRV had 0 problems.

Transmission with a mind of it's own.

When decelerating in town driving, the transmission shifts are eratic and when you accelerate the transmission will down shift and the car jumps forward at times it has put me in a dangerous situation. When at highway speed and going up a hill or incline the engine misfires. Between the engine misfire and the eratic transmission shifts I some times hate having to drive this thing anywhere especially in traffic. Of course the dealer said all is normal no codes. I am a retired mechanic and this is not normal. I expected more from Honda.

Let's first start by saying that for the last 10 years we have driven an '05 Pontiac Montana SV6 that by far was the worst piece of garbage that any one could ever be forced to drive. It is sitting in our yard with a remote possibility that anyone will ever take it away, even for free.Worthless! We were able to purchase our new Odyssey at a Honda discounted price with amazing finance rate. ,one of the reasons we chose this over the Toyota Sienna.($4000+ in savings) So far the van has gone far beyond our expectations as far as quality.A few issues that are mentioned later. Runs great on the highway, although we have only been on a few trips with it.

We enjoy the stable roadabiity, quietness, comfortable, supportive seats, roominess, smooth quiet engine. So far, (19000 miles), quite "solid", except we had a "creak" low down in the door post behind the driver's seat. They finally fixed it - factory had a service bulletin on it. At 17,000 miles, front brakes began to "pulse" from warped rotors. They were going to "turn them" under warranty, but I found a service bulletin online showing redesigned rotors (heavier, with cooling vents). The factory was aware of the problem. They agreed to replace them if I split the cost. They should have replaced them for free really, but it cost me only $115. Now they're smooth as silk. Several minor negatives: the ride is a bit "truck like" (not real "supple), and the dash control for heating/air conditioning are not" intuitive" - took us quite a while to learn how to work everything. We finally have it figured out, but even the huge owners manual was somewhat obtuse. Gas mileage on a trip at 65 mph often about 30. Even around town usually over 20. V-6 has ample power, smooth and quiet. Overall, we still find it an excellent vehicle. Update: May, 2017. We now have 20,000+ miles on it, and brakes are still beautiful. We developed a "creak" in the lower drivers side door post every time you accelerated from a stop. The dealer found a factory bulletin on that problem too, and although it took two or three trips to the dealer they finally have it fixed. So, at this point, we're still quite happy with our Odyssey. UPDATE: 11/14/18. Vehicle will soon be five years old. Now has 30000 miles. Has been trouble free since prior problems were resolved. Still tight and solid. Very nice, stable, quiet, comfortable road car which we enjoy. We enjoy the absence of a console between the two front seats. (All new Odyssey's have the console). We use the open space on trips for snacks or a variety of other things (kleenex box).

The brake rotors' wear choppy causing high speed vibration (over 60 mph) in the steering . Dealer claims it is normal and 'within spec's', nothing to be addressed! As of July '16 with appx.29,000 miles and the repeated response at the service interval I felt strong enough lack of safety to sell my Honda Odyssey. Very disappointing to an otherwise incredibly great gas mileage and luxurious ride.
