Great technology, not sure why GM abandoned it
I purchased a 2013 Volt new in May, 2013, and only wish I'd have waited for a few months because the price dropped by $5,000. I have driven the vehicle for over 165,000 miles and have had only 2 issues; one of which was repaired under GM Recall, the other was covered by GM Warranty. I drive 120 miles round trip for work, so in the summer, roughly 1/2 of my commute is on battery power. The lifetime average for the car is currently at 56.7 mpg, and will increase over the summer months, as the heater uses more of the electric range during the winter. The ride is great and the only thing my spoiled kids complain about is the lack of a DVD entertainment system, and no heated rear seats. The car has driven fine in the Colorado winters I've had to deal with for the past 4 years, a lot of which is because of the tires chosen. I went away from the factory tires within a week of buying the car, because they were NOT good and I didn't feel safe while driving in rain with them, and certainly would have been worse in snow! Our Volt has been awesome and after reading about people with in excess of 200,000 miles, I have no worries about the dependability and longevity of the vehicle, which is why I sold it to my nephew with confidence it will be the same for him.

Commuting and more.
Our daily commute is 15 miles so we use electric only while in town. Cost for a full charge (30-40 miles) is $0.62. Our last trip out of town was fine, 200+ miles, about 6 hours in the car and did not get uncomfortable. Rarely could tell when the gas engine came on. Edmunds mentions touchy brakes but ours seems fine.

Amazing technology, fun to drive, but at a price
Great car... replaced a BMW 335I... this car isn't a bimmer, but it's a very well built vehicle although there is a lot of plastic... fun to drive... but, you have to learn how to drive it... I drive mostly in low around town (not in the traditional sense as car is one speed), it helps regenerate the battery more efficiently... getting between 38-45 miles on a charge this way... when driving on open road, hold feature is outstanding... saves all the electric... Averaging 36 MPG when on all gas ... Overall MPG will depend on how you drive... the more you use it as an EV the higher the MPG... Car is pricey but so is all new technology... happy to buy American... don't miss the Bimmer...
5K miles 2 CEL's and 12 days in service bay
Day one, test drove the vehicle all was good paid for said vehicle, 2 miles from dealership CEL comes on, I call OnStar they report a charging cooling system not operating properly. I take it back to the dealership immediately they can't get to it until the following day. They put me in a rental I then head home. Couple days later the car is ready for pick up and I was told it was an over use of brakes. 5K miles new CEL, I call OnStar they report a charging cooling system not operating properly, I take it to a different dealer. Nine days later they replace 5123 drive motor battery coolant cooler, as per DTC P5034.
Buyer Beware!
My Wife and I bought 2 of these Volts in 2012. Within 7 months my Volt had a major Regen bearing failure. The dealer tried to replace it twice. They ended up giving me a new car (A buyback). Within 1000 miles of owning the new 2013 Volt, I had no heat, that took 2 trips to the dealer to fix, and then the same Regen bearing failure that took weeks to get repaired! Now just in the past 3 weeks my Wifes Volt Died. It had to be towed in 2 times. The dealer said it was a 12 Battery issue. They replaced it and it failed again! These cars have too many issues that the dealer or GM have knowledge enough to fix properly. Buyer Beware...buy at your own risk!
