I'm a Believer
I bought my Volt used with 50,000 miles on it. (Look at the Lifetime mileage-- that will tell you how often the engine has been used by MPG.) My car only had 40mpg in its lifetime so the engine has lots of hours on it. I didn't really care though as I have a 120 mile commute every day. The resale value sucks on them but that means I bought a great used car for cheap! The first thing that struck me test driving it was how solid it feels. It really feels like a tank but it handles super tight. Interior materials feel to be of good quality (leather is thick, covers the whole seat, and dash panels are solid and fit together tightly). It is also of course silent when in Normal mode and the generator is relatively quiet when it runs (I only use it on the highway which drowns out engine noise with road noise anyway); it's still quieter and smoother than a 4-cylinder. I get about 55mpg in my daily commute and use electric only on weekends when I don't drive far. The increase in my electric bill has been about $10/month. The back seat is cramped but I don't have passengers much. The car also came with the Bose sound system and it sounds fantastic. My biggest gripe is the user interface on the center stack and dash. It's an absolute mess. It's super dated looking and just vomits information at the driver. The graphics look straight out of 2002. I love access to tons of info on how my car is running, but sheesh. Otherwise, the Volt has been great, super reliable, and a blast to drive especially in Sport mode. My mother in law drove mine and bought one for herself. Be like my mother in law. Drive a Volt. Update May 2020: I still have my Volt and have no plans on replacing it anytime soon. It now has 145,000 miles on it and the only thing I've had to have fixed was the electric motor bearings, which was still covered by warranty at the time. The only thing that is constantly giving me a headache is that the charge door sticks. They used a cheap plastic pin that has worn down over time, so I have to open the door with my thumbnail while pressing the release button with my other hand. Other than that, the car has been great. I really wish they hadn't stopped making them. Update May 2022: 200,000 miles and still going strong. Haven’t had any repairs needed since my last update. Probably should get brakes soon (they are original to the car, but I never use them because I always use regenerative braking). Had to refill the washer fluid. Maintenance on this car is shockingly boring because there’s so little of it. Update May 2024: 235,000 miles and going! Unfortunately, shortly after my 200K review, the unthinkable happened… the hybrid battery needed replacing. It was a stiff $7,000 fix from BestHybridBatteries.com, but with an unlimited mileage 3-year warranty it was worth it imo. A year afterwards, the motor bearing started going out, another $1,200. Knock wood, since then, it is like driving a new car. I still can’t talk myself out of this car and into a new car payment. Update 11/24: Will hit 250,000 miles on my way to work tomorrow. Every sensor still works. Even the leather still looks new. What a great car.

Just reached 12K miles and so far so good..
So far, the car has been great. It drives so smooth and the instant torque I get from a dead stop is a delight after dealing the turbo lag on my Outback XT for 8 years. The EV range covers my work and weekend commutes so I can go months without having to buy gas. Getting the HOV lane stickers is great along with the $1,500 rebate from the state. I also got a time-of-use meter from my local utility (Pasadena) so I get cheaper electricity rates during mid and off peak times. They also gave me $300 of LED lightbulbs! The car is sluggish in ER mode while driving in the city but, has been fine on long trips. I average 37 to 43 miles MPG depending on how fast I'm going. No issues ... yet.

Best car I have ever owned.
I LOVE THIS CAR!!!! I have had this car for 6 years and 105,000 miles and I still look forward to driving it every day. The EV experience is amazing. Reliability of this very complex vehicle has been perfect. I have not had any items fail. I will be keeping this car for a very long time. Best purchase I have ever made.

Commuting and more.
Our daily commute is 15 miles so we use electric only while in town. Cost for a full charge (30-40 miles) is $0.62. Our last trip out of town was fine, 200+ miles, about 6 hours in the car and did not get uncomfortable. Rarely could tell when the gas engine came on. Edmunds mentions touchy brakes but ours seems fine.
Great Technology and great car
Purchased in Oct 2012 and have approx. 5000 miles on the vehicle as of this posting. I am 6'2" and fit just fine in this car. I love the fact that I can cruise up to 40 miles (depending on temp and speed) without having to use gas. This translates to 0 carbon emissions probably 75% of the time and the cost for electric versus gas in my area translates to 85-90 MPG at current premium fuel costs, so you can't beat the efficiency of the battery power. On long drives the car is smooth and comfortable. I would recommend leasing this vehicle - when 3 years are up - the technology will probably have advanced to 100+ miles before fuel is used.
