In 2020 we built a new net-zero house with a 15 kW solar array, so when the lease on our 2019 Honda CR-V ended, we shopped for an EV to replace it. We tested the Model Y, Mach-E, ID.4, EV6, Ioniq 5, BMW iX, and BMW i4, settling on an i4 eDrive 40 with the M-Sport package. This was a big step for us not only in the switch to an EV, but also because it replaced an AWD SUV (our other car is a 2018 Audi S4). We chose the i4 based on driving dynamics, range, and build quality, figuring that the large hatchback would manage 99% of the hauling tasks of an SUV or wagon. We chose the RWD i4 based on better range and driving dynamics than the AWD i4 M50. Living on the south coast of MA, winters are mild so we anticipated that RWD and the OEM all-season (i.e., no season) tires would be sufficient all year round, particularly as we have the S4 with an 18" winter wheel and tire package for those few days when RWD might be dicey. I love performance cars, which is the i4 emphatically not, but it is so rewarding to drive that I hardly use the S4 anymore. The dynamics are quite good. Steering unsurprisingly lacks feel but is accurate with crisp turn-in and good centering (we got the dynamic steering option). We got the M-Sport package as that was the only way to get adaptive dampers. The car corners fairly flat and comfort mode hits an excellent balance between absorbing bumps while limiting excess body motion. The car can hustle and has decent grip on the OEM Pirelli P Zeros, but the 4680-pound curb weight makes it more of a luxury cruiser than a sport sedan, despite the pretense. Given that weight, we opted for the uprated brakes, but they hardly ever get used since the regen works so well. At least the brake pedal feel is good and the transitions from regen to mechanical braking are imperceptible. The single motor i4 has more than adequate acceleration (high 4 to low 5 sec 0-60 according to reviews) and has the typical EV benefit of instant torque that makes merging on highways or passing bicycles on country roads easy. The interior build quality and feel are great, and the car is very quiet on the road. We got the Harmon Kardon sound system and it's worth the money, particularly with the minimal background noise. This is the first car I've owned where listening to classical music is worthwhile. The interior downsides are the center tunnel (this is a dual-purpose ICE/EV platform) and limited rear passenger leg and headroom. Not a problem for us with no kids or dogs but could deter many. The hatch works well, and the car can easily haul a bicycle or all our trash & recycling for the dump run. The iDrive 8 infotainment system is on par with better end of those in EVs we tested (ID.4 the worst) but the lack of physical buttons for some functions is irritating. My biggest gripe is with turning on the seat heaters (at least the steering wheel has a one-level physical button) and the lack of physical audio preset buttons. Voice control works well but is too laggy for flipping between Sirius XM channels. The graphic quality of the display is excellent, and we haven't had any issues with using it in bright sun or at night. The HUD works well and shows next turn instructions from Waze via Android Auto. Seeing Waze guidance on the HUD was intermittent at first, but now realizable. Maybe an OTA update fixed it? We initially optioned dynamic cruise control and 360-degree parking camera, but those became unavailable as the wiring harnesses were made in Ukraine. Damn Putin! A downside of the M-Sport package is that it only comes with staggered width 19" wheels. Those large contact patches cost about 7% of range compared to the 18s on the base e40. Given the way we drive the car, I'd happily give up some grip for better range. Despite big wheels, the car has been more efficient than we expected. Our solar array makes more power than the house uses, and MA has net metering, so we have paid nothing for charging over the first 20,000 miles of use (October 2022 through December 2024). When the weather is good (no rain, temps in the high 40s to low 70s) we routinely see 3.8 to 4.2 mi/kWh or better in mixed driving that's about 80% highway. Average mi/kWh since factory now sits at 3.9. It loses 20-30% of range in cold weather. Still, there is enough capacity (81.5 kWh) that even in the worst conditions I can make my once a week 150-mile round trip commute while keeping the state of charge between 80-20%. I believe that it beats the EPA rated range 282-mile range in ideal conditions. Since we bought the car outright, I'm trying to keep the SOC in the 80-20 range. So far, I have avoided DC fast charging. For longer trips, particularly in foul weather, we use the S4. When I started looking at EVs I never imagined buying one built on an ICE platform, but the test drive sealed the deal for the i4. Something about the low center of gravity, very quiet cabin, and nicely balanced suspension makes the i4 driving experience feel like a much more expensive luxury car. Despite being a petrol-head and former amateur motorcycle road racer, the peak i4 driving experience for me is serenely wafting along in that comfortable and quiet cabin, listening to music, and eking out the highest mi/kWh I can. It's fun to try and maximize coasting and then judge the regen invoked by moving the drive selector from D to B so the car stops at a light or intersection without touching the brake. Another benefit of being inside the car is not having to look at its godawful nose. At least it has a low coefficient of drag. The i4 might not appeal to a wide audience, but for us it's near perfect. I'd give it five stars if we could have got the dynamic cruise and parking assist features. The first scheduled maintenance was at 36,000 miles based on 2-year interval (otherwise 40K). It was relatively trivial, except that the rear tires needed replacement. I doubt the brakes will need anything for the first 100,000 miles since I mostly slow with regen, and it's great not having to pay for oil & filter changes every 7,500 to 10,000 miles, or spark plugs & timing belts. The negatives are minor so far. The M steering wheel is too thick and the metal trim on its spokes are cold in winter and take a long time to warm up despite the heated wheel. The outside doorhandles are oddly designed, making it easy for your hand to slide off when trying to open them. The blind spot warning lights in the side mirrors are too small and peripherally placed to be ideal. Our Audi S4 has big warning lights in the side mirror bezel that is much better, but the mirror placement in i4 wouldn't allow it. The back of the car is a dirt magnet. Not sure if that's got to do with aerodynamics, but it never stays clean the and the rear-facing camera lens requires frequent cleaning in winter. That's about all I have to complain about so far (2 years and 38,000 miles).

I have owned the BMW i4 now for 2 weeks and it has not disappointed. The comfort level is outstanding and battery distance is unbelievable 300+ miles. It rides so nice and have receive multiple compliment on the choice of color, the San Remo Green. If anyone is contemplating an EV and wants something other than the same old Tesla I would highly recoutaki g a look at this beauty.

I got very lucky in that someone had backed out on their VERY well spec'd 2023 I4 eDrive40 in late Dec 22. It has everything I want and only missing what I don't want (such as parking assistance). This car is fast, smooth, comfortable and relaxing to drive. The Harmon Kardon is the best I've heard in a car (I've owned many, many BMWs) and dare I compare the sound to the Bowers and Wilkins? It sounds that good. And the hatchback is just awesome! Two thumbs up on this well built, good looking EV. Some of the comments made by the two testers are wrong (such as the cons - they shouldn't compare the engagement to an ICE vehicle), but they're entitled to make those type of comments.

After owning 3 BMW M sport models starting in 1997, in 2022 I decided to order my first EV,. My 2023 Portimao Blue I4 M50 arrived in February 2023. After driving it for 10 months I rate this the BEST BMW I have owned. With 536 hp it out performs any of my previous BMW’s and has the best road manners. I love my I4 M50

Well, my idea was not to buy a full EV yet, when local Toyota dealer asked 10k on top of the 40K+++ RAV4 Prime in 2022… the decision was far from hard. We traded our 4-5 years old Prius Prime for an 2023 BMW I4 e40. I have to admit, waiting months for a car… is an odd feeling. Especially when you can see interest rates change week after week… yet we (I) was persistent and in late October last year… here it was, waiting on the parking lot for me. I have to admit, in the last few years I was lucky to be able to drive several cars, but never luxury “ultimate driving machine”… and after a year being the owner of one, it is… the ultimate driving machine. Let’s get the range question settled from the beginning. Depends on the season your range will vary. It did on my Prius Prime, it does on my I4. That is how electricity behaves. However… for the price Kw/Mile… and getting there in few (low few) seconds. Is well worth it. Furthermore… you would not notice you are driving well over 80-90 miles per hour on the interstate. The ride is sooo smooth… and the motor, responsive. I would suggest getting a second set of weeks and tires for the winter season. That much torque without the proper friction may cost you much more than a set of wheels and tires. Comfort… well, the car knows who drives it and adjust seating and entertainment accordingly. You forgot your key… not to worry, your phone can be a key. So… after a few drives, my wife concluded that I need to go buy myself a car, the beemer is her car now. I guess, I’m on the market for a new car. Update... 11000 miles later... and I5 test ride later, my I4 rocks... it is the perfect size for in city and just right for interstate. If I have issues, it is the fact I cannot get the mileage advertised as it recalculates constantly. You cannot plan a long trips, especially in the upper Midwest, where chargers are rare and far apart. The other thing is... being such a "new" technology and having a premium vehicle... I wonder what is coming after the 4 years of factory warranty expires. I already had a high voltage error, I was told it is the parking assist, thinking there is an issue while on neutral going true the car wash. This is my first BMW so... my skepticism is based on other brands and services... we shall see. as time passes

I've had the BMW i4 e35 for about 4 months now, and I couldn't be happier with the purchase. The ride is smooth and quiet. The handling is sporty. And the acceleration, even in the e35 is exhilarating. It is a joy to drive. This is my first electric car and any anxiety I had about owning one have been put to rest. Range has not been an issue. BMW recommends you charge the battery to only 80% (about 200 miles) to preserve long term battery life. Even so, the battery has never been below 20% charge for me. I drive about 40 miles to work round trip, and drive to a few meetings during the day. I have never had to use a public charger. My 40a charger at home charges the car from 20% to 80% in under 3 hours. The car is loaded with technology and features. It will take me months to explore all of them. The large touch display is the perfect size. And, I have had no issues with CarPlay. It's a great car and a great value.

The BMW i4 has all of the safety and design features I seek, plus BMW's high quality of production. But to get all the safety features requires another $10,000 for the M 50 model -- they are not available as options for the straight i4. Driving the car was a pleasure, but I don't want all the performance features of the M series car: I want the safety ones. BMW has done a good job by its use of mechanical switches and knobs, not screens that take attention away from driving. Cars that are moving toward all digital touch screen displays instead of physical controls are making a serious safety error. BMW has the right mix: large screens to display information, but physical controls where attention to the road is essential. Their heads-up display is well done. But good luck on getting the vehicle. I can't even place the order because there are not enough slots allocated to dealers.

Range anxiety with BMW class an style

Let me be clear. This car rides beautifully, is stunning to look at, has high quality build throughout, and has power and pick up to spare. It is also comfortable and roomy with the capacious trunk. My disappointment is the poor range. I was led to believe that this car would give me 250 to 300 miles of range easily and that it would often exceed 300 miles a bit. With a recommended maximum filling capacity for the battery of 80%, The range is only about 200 miles or so. This, coupled with the relative scarcity of public, charging facilities, have made this car and expensive means to go to the local mall or shopping center. I would simply not be comfortable driving this car on a long distance trip. Perhaps when the long promised, but still unavailable ability to use Tesla superchargers comes to fruition, I will feel differently. The currently available public networks by Electrify America and EVgo, or so few and far between us to be practically useless. I installed a charging set up in my garage, so I am OK in my immediate area. However, until you can drive this car, knowing that you will not be forced to spend half of your trip hunting for a charging station it will remain an expensive but beautiful toy.

Wow, what a car!! They’ve calibrated this to feel like a normal car and it looks like a BMW too! It is fast but not too fast - just right! The seat comfort is pretty good but took me awhile to get just right. Fit and finish is superb - can definitely tell this was made in Germany. Harmon/ Kardon sound is a must…though I must say even it is just okay, not as good as my B&O system was in an Audi I owned previously. What about range? Well, it’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect/as rated. Love the spacious usable rear cargo area!! Now we just need more charging stations across the U.S.

It seemed like an amazing car. After having the car for three weeks, I was leaving a drive-through and touched a curb at 5 mph. There was no visible damage to the car. When looking under the car there was a 2 inch gap in the battery casing with no undercarriage damage evident. The insurance company totaled the car as the minimal cost was $28,000 and they couldn't tell if there would be damage found to the battery. The car is too low and the battery too close to each wheel. STAY AWAY

The power is not everything in i4 M50

When you consciously start to enjoy the car, you quickly get the feeling that power is not the main priority. The suspension system captures your attention first, in sync with the reliable steering controls. The seat provides a sense of security around you. Finally, you find the safety in the brakes. The precise execution of the internal components, along with the sleek exterior lines, come together to enhance the pleasure of both driving the i4 M50 ... and owning one.

We just got our eDrive35 in British Columbia. The dealer neglected to advise that the eDrive35 did NOT get the Advanced Driver Assistance. So VERY disappointed in BMW and their dealer network. This is why dealers are going to be a thing of the past a simple web site could do a better job of telling you what you get and what you don't. Anyways, the rest of the car is simply incredible. We got the white with conjac interior. Excellent quality, feel and comfort. So far, the car is just tight and well made - solid. I'm not sure about the mileage quite yet. With 90% charge, the distance estimator thinks I can do 370 KM. That's a lot below the advertised 418KM to this point. I've heard that the car estimator will get better and better as you use it and gets more accurate as it figures out the environment and driving style. On the charging, at 50KW on a level 2 charger it seems to charge at 1% per minute. As far as room goes, there is a ton of cargo room back there. However, no trunk and back seat is a little tight ... ok a lot tight. So far we have been pleased as punch with everything in this car. The only advice I have for potential purchasers is to buy, but know EXACTLY which packages you are delivered - this can be a real big list and very confusing if you don't have a good sales consultant.

This is our first BMW full EV. We’ve owned 530e, EQE, Model 3 (yuk). It is pure BMW, solid build. No squeaks, rattles, vibrations..NOTHING! Have not had one lick of issues, had for nearly a year and 10,000 miles. Harmon Kardon is beautiful as is the Black Sapphire paint. No wind noise, silent operation, well controlled sporty ride…NO RUN FLATS! (Yes, please). Electric range has been mostly accurate. BMW has proven itself as great EV builder, and this i4 isn’t even a ground up design!

Got a new i4 eDrive 40 w 19 in wheels: . - very comfortable ride and seats. heat and AC is awesome. - the finish is incredible. exactly what one expects from BMW. - Perfect balance of buttons & touch screen (compared w 'too much iPad' in you know which one..) - shows range 250-280 miles at 100% battery, I have never driven to low enough to get an actual calculation. - wireless Apple care-play keeps on breaking down and disconnecting. It actually crashed when I tried to sync 2 iPhones to the car: they told me to delete both and reinstall only one! (ie: the 'system got confused' !) - advanced driving features like lane centering, lane assist lags behind c/w my wife's 5-year-old Audi. Could not figure out Adv Brading (maybe need to buy an upgraded package...?) - BMW Navigation is a joke: it lags by a few seconds to the point that you keep on missing your turns... Now I only use Google Maps as my default. - iDrive, though easy to use, the screen keeps on going off every few minutes and the service people have not been able to fix the problem: I was told that its a software glitch, 'BMW is aware of it' and is supposed to get a 'patch' to fix it (WHEN?!). I left the car for a day and they returned it in a worse state!! (disappointing for a $60k machine... ) - free charging plan w Electrify America: used to 5 times so far, & stations have not delivered > 90-100 kW, be prepared to wait!

I have been considering the jump to an EV for two years now but I wanted an EV sports sedan, not just a regular sedate sedan, or an EUV type vehicle, but something a bit more exhilarating and maybe a touch of luxury too for the $$ so the options in January 2025 are still pretty limited to about two serious contenders in my price range. Tesla Model 3 performance and the i4 M50. The nearest Tesla dealership is over two hours away and the BMW dealership is about a block from my home so that had some influence on my choice. I rode in my friend's Tesla M3P model and was very impressed in its acceleration characteristics but also found its interior nice but kind of spartan. The M50 feels more like a lux sports sedan inside and out than the Tesla. My daily driver is a 2017 Honda Ridgeline with a 280 HP V6 and I love its practicality and utility but hopping into the 536HP BMW M50 is a whole other universe. This sedan is like a rocketship comparatively and it has almost the same curb weight but feels much more planted and sticks like glue in the corners and is like comparing an apple to an orange. The 2025 M50 is almost 80K brand new with all the options that the 2023 model I found with only 13,000 miles on it and parked side by side is almost undistinguishable from the 2025 model. I bought it for 48K which was a little less than market value and the former owner took all that depreciation when he purchased it new and thentraded it in for whatever reason they may have had to do so. For the price I would seriously try and find you one of these with low mileage on the used market as I still enjoy the original warranty and the projected low maintenance associated with EV ownership. The dual motor M50 will deliver sub 4 second acceleration with admirable road hugging handling and seems to have about 250-270 mile range which is a little less than the standard i4 EV but more than adequate for real world usage and with a 240 outlet in the garage I find it charges quickly in just a few hours at home. My Ridgeline at local gas prices goes about 400 miles on about 44$ of gasoline. The M5 does the same for about 11$ worth of electricity. So far, the car delivers the fun and comfort I was looking for from a sports sedan and I think as a used vehicle was a bargain.

All the tech, all the speed

I really didn't know what to expect from this car, especially based on major publication reviews that tend to be a bit stuffy. First of all, it's a rocket! You don't even need to be in Sport mode to take off like a fast roller-coaster ride. It's almost scary and a whole lot of fun! Beyond that, it's got lots of great tech packed into a familiar BMW interior. The Harmon-Kardon sound system is nicely balanced, and the little touches like customizable ambient lighting colors demonstrates the fine-detail care that BMW puts into their design. There are a few small things that I would like to see done differently: the glove box is not as good as the one in my 2015 4 series. It's not as deep and I really can't store much in it. Secondly, this particular car did not come with a driver's side glove box, which I really liked on the old car as well. Couple this with reduced trunk space and no front trunk, and this car really does not have enough storage. Again, these are minor complaints and didn't change my 5-star rating. All in all, this is a fantastic car!

Love the car

I've had the car for 2 weeks now and have put about 500 miles on it. Initially I had a heard time with setting up the BMW ID, the Digital Key and signing up for the free Electrify America charging. However, the car itself is fabulous and drives better than any car that I have ever driven and I have owned several BMW's, Mercedes and Audi's in the past as well as American and Japanese cars. I am still learning all the features, but this car is worth every penny and more.

I've owned my BMW i4 M50 for just under two years. It has been a great car. Zero maintenance. Superfast. Looks good. Rides remarkably well for a 5,000-pound car. Really good tech. I think it is a great car for the money.

It’s a beautiful car and has plenty of get up and go. It practically drives itself and the one pedal driving is really remarkable. It’s the best car I ever owned and the home charging is easy to do. The only maintenance is to check the tire pressure.

Do not buy if you have a child using booster seat

Just leased an i4 and unfortunately did not think to check whether our standard booster seat would fit. It is nearly impossible to get the buckle to click due to how tight of fit the buckle recepticle is to the seat and the width of the seat. This seems to be a prevalent issue across bmw models. So, you can try to find a narrow booster seat… I’m looking for something now. Was really annoyed that when I called the service department they didn’t know this was an issue, and the service department manager even suggested (only suggested) I look into unapproved third party seatbelt extenders. Don’t spend this much for a car, or buy any car that doesn’t care about your children’s safety

It’s a rocket, and the handling feels just like my previous 2011 3 series. I have the i4 M50, and if you floor it, you’d better have a lot of empty road ahead of you. It feels solid, like it’s carved out of a solid ingot of metal. It’s comfortable, at least in the front seats, and the trunk is roomy for a sedan. That’s where my praise ends. The electronics, of which there are a great deal, feel like it’s not quite finished. When you push a button to, say, close the garage door, it takes about 1/2 a second to take effect. Ditto for opening the hatchback. The initial impression is that it didn’t work, so you push harder. But of course, it works…just takes a half a tick. The Apple Car Play works when it wants to. It sometimes works as soon as soon as I get in the car, but one out of three trips, it takes a few minutes. Then, after a mile or so, without me doing anything, it connects. Similarly, the way to unlock and lock is baffling. The phone only unlocks the car on prime numbered Thursdays (i.e. whenever it feels like it) so I end up using the key fob. About a month in, I had a stupid failure: the driver’s window stopped going up and down. Thanks to the fiendishly clever feature that lowers the window to help it seal when you close it, it refused to close without a mighty slam. I made an appointment with my BMW dealer, who of course was only too happy to see me…in a few days. Simultaneously, I google’d the answer. Turns out nothing was broken: the software was just in an illegal state. Google suggested I hold down this button while rubbing my belly and tapping my foot, and presto, it was fixed. The dealer, of course, had no such suggestion, because they wanted to warranty repair. Stay away. This is not the “just works” BMW you’re used to. It’s a collection of poorly programmed computers wrapped around two very powerful electric motors.
