Rare SUV alternative

Purchased as a CPO 08/01/19 to replace our leased 2016 528i. Black/black Sport Line trim w HK stereo & Exec pkg (heads up display, gesture controls, soft-close doors & parking assistant). Incredibly comfortable, whether commuting to work or on a road trip. Slightly higher seating position, but still drives like a luxury car. It definitely feels like they have underrated the horsepower. Combine that with x-drive, and great seats, and this thing feels unstoppable. I have only seen one on the road; the 2-year production run will ensure it remains a unicorn. Minor complaints: wind noise from the large sunroof and frameless door windows. Definitely not as quiet as the 528i w luxury pkg. Also has blind spots to the rear and can be a handful to park. Get the 360’ camera (comes w prkg pkg) and the upgraded stereo. You won’t regret it! **08/04/21update ** 2 years and 40k miles later — we still love the car. I have actually been looking at another one to possibly replace our 2017 330xi wagon. No mechanical issues, aside from replacing a window regulator. Love this car!

Cross over reality

Having recently taken delivery of a new BMW 640 GT to replace a BMW X5 350i X drive I have been impressed by the much improved quality of the German manufactured engineering, everything about this car feels like solid quality. The interior space and trunk both offer best in class space, again beating the X5 for utility. The trunk swallows luggage or several sets of golf clubs with ease. The drive may not be as sporty at the high performance sedans from the BMW stable, but again it is far superior to the SUV handling. The safety equipment and driver assistance options are excellent and worth investing to add to driver and passenger safety and comfort. Having previously owned 5 Series Sedans and more recently the X5 SUV, this is a perfect cross over between the two, with a ride close the sedans and the space and utility of the SUV. These cars may not sell in large numbers in the US so if your looking for something that stands out from the crowd this may be the option for you.

Great all purpose car. Took my family of 5, with fold up table, benches, food and presents to a family Christmas party 2 hours away. No complaints from the women in the back (though all are petite) and we topped out at 100mph on some stretches. Trunk is huge. Eats golf bags and gun cases. Car was completely optioned out, including dynamic handling which helps a lot (I had the previous generation 550 GT w/ out). Don't miss the V8 as the 6 is plenty, and much better mileage which is important given the gas tank is so small (18g). The self steering mode is only ok, as it constantly seeks out the edge of the road, giving the car a little weave. The lane departure system wrestles you if the blinker isn't used, which makes sense but is tedious so its off most of the time. Interior light system is only fun to play with once. M package is very sporty looking, gets lots of complements. Pretty cool car. Recommended.

This car is pure luxury with a sporty twist that can hold 4/5 and plenty more for a cruise down the road. The technology package is outstanding and I continue to learn more about my car everytime I drive it. Can’t wait for the weather to cool down to enjoy my giant moon roof!

Many issues in less than 2 months of ownership

The concept of this car is great, which is why I bought it. Unfortunately, the particular car I bought was all smoke and mirrors. Less than 2 days after I purchased, the panoramic sunroof broke—after opening to vent it wouldn’t close. The sunroof cassette had to be replaced. While waiting on a service appointment to have the sunroof fixed, I noticed other issues. A fiber optic in the ambient lighting had a defect such that light was not passing through about 8 inches of the fiber optic in the dashboard. Had to have that replaced. Also noticed that the headliner around the opening to the trunk was coming apart and falling down. That got repaired after the sunroof was repaired and reinstalled. I’ve now had the car for less than 2 months and notice a whistling and/or wind noise in the cabin sometimes on the highway. Also, the BMW iPhone app, which generally includes a lot of useful info about the status of the vehicle, just started showing the status of the “rear window” as “unknown.”

Your Ultimate Highway Cruiser with personality

6 GT is a mixture of 5 series cabin, 7 series roominess, X5 practility under the 6 series Coupe nameplate. Driving comfort is superb with 4 corner air ride. The whole car glides over road imperfections without disturbing you. The cabin is surprisingly quiet, giving the fact that it has frameless doors. The B58 inline-6 engine is more than enough thrust, in my mind this has better exhaust note (more bubbles and cracks) than 540i, possibly due to more ground clearance for exhaust system. For this much power the engine is very efficient, but you need to control your right foot fairly well. 6 GT's big size can't be disguised though. Expect some body rolls even with the dynamic handling package. Once you push the car over the body roll, it claws the road well, with traditional RWD dynamics. As a full-size, it's harder to park in city situations. The interior is exactly the same as 5 series, minus GT embroidered trim pieces, extra room, and frameless glass. Doesn't feel as much distinction as this car needs. Nevertheless, the materials and build quality is superb. Harman Kardon sound is barely average in this segment. I have owned mine for 6 months and I give overall 8.5/10. This is a luxury vehicle with ample power, rarity, and personality. If you like 5/7 series or X5 but want something different, this is for you.

Fantastic compromise without the compromise

I bought this CPO, so any issues, and all the initial depreciation were gone. It has been amongst my favorite vehicles I have owned. It's very fast, handles very well, and includes all the tech I need/want. And it provides all the space I need for my big family. I am a dedicated sports car person and cannot envision ever driving an SUV. Yet, I have 4 teenagers in sports. Lots of bat bags, lacrosse sticks and other equipment. This allows me to continue to enjoy my driving experience, as I do, yet get all the kids and their gear wherever we need to go. And in style and comfort. And seriously, this thing is about as fast as my 300ZX twin turbo was, way back when. It just has a large back seat and it swallows cargo. 65 cu. ft. of cargo is more than most midsized SUV's. This really fits the bill. We've become an SUV society, but for those that still love driving, but need a bit more space, this is the compromise that really isn't compromising.

Only had it a week but the ride, handling and tech are great. Gets good mileage. Need to be careful on the highway. Quick, easy, quiet power gets this thing going fast without even trying.

Four Fifths!

I have been pushing a 640 GT for two years and love most things about it. I like the look, interior spaciousness, the utility of the 5th door and ability to haul things around, the tech, the quietness of the ride, the high door sills, the thrust of the engine, it’s ability to haul arse, and the fact that I don’t see many on the road. It is a great place to spend time in. The interior is spacious, airy, and happy feeling. To me, it far exceeds the interior of the 5 series and is somehow more intimate than BMWs SUV interiors, without feeling smaller. On the flip side, unless the road is straight, it is hard for me to be confident in the handling at speed. The steering feedback and suspension leave you with no idea of how much grip you have or where the limit is. This is by far my biggest issue with the car. Having come from 5 series sedans and a wagon, I expected similar handling, which is far from what this delivers. Really, it feels like a luxurious, comfortable, straight line, muscle car. I’m also not a fan of run flats. I tried non-run flats, and they don’t work on this thing. The sidewalls of non-run flats cannot support the weight of the car and the ride becomes truly degraded. I love the car, just wish I could throw it into curves. Interestingly, I’ve had people refer to it as “the baby X-6” and the “7 series hatchback”. Would I buy it again…hmmm? As a long-term Beemer owner, I really miss the ability to drive aggressively. I’d probably opt for an X6. I imagine it would give me a lot of what the 640 offers, but still allow me to play with the curves.
