Great Vehicle - Poor Software

North Shore, 01/24/2024
2022 Audi SQ7 Prestige 4dr SUV AWD (4.0L 8cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 8A)

This is my fourth q7 vehicle and probably my last. I factory ordered this vehicle with the Sport, Prestige, Luxury, Black Optic and Towing packages. Positives: Engine and drive train are fantastic. Fantastic throttle response, great feel of the road and behaves like a smaller vehicle than it is. The ride is much improved over the 2017 and 2019 models I owned previously. Negatives: Software! Auto on/off system is actually dangerous. The 4.0 liter deactivates within a fraction of a second of coming to a complete stop. If you stop and try to immediately pull into traffic the engine is not able to restart for several seconds which can create a dangerous situation. The MMI is shipped from the factory full of glitches. After 4 trips to the dealer for software updates we have eliminated the significant issues. Items like: heater/air conditioning just shut off and will not restart even if you power cycle the car. Randomly starts working after several hours of sitting. Navigation system just loses your location and shows you wandering through a field several miles North of your current position. Airplay just randomly restarts multiple times. Backup cameras and parking assistance fail to activate when starting the vehicle forcing you to shut off and restart the vehicle. However, Audi's incompetence shows in that the vehicle is unable to remember any radio station presets for more than a week or so. So virtually every trip requires me to reprogram favorites and hope it remembers for a few on/off cycles.

Great understeery wagon (it's not an SUV!)

I purchased a new 2023 model with tons of discounts. Thus far, it's been great. Although, I have to admit that I am concern about the reported BSG issues plaguing some Audis. I really wish car makers would stop the nonsense of implementing these mild-hybrid systems. Well built, attention to detail in quality, etc. I'd say this wagon - it's a wagon - is probably best suited for leasing than buying. As for others' highlight about MMI issues, I haven't experienced too many glitches, but generally, I'd say that the auto industry's infotainment systems are generally just garbage. MKBHD said it best. If I show you, in 2024, an ipad that functions like those systems, you wouldn't buy them. Infotainment systems engineering just isn't carmakers' suit. Period.

500 hp and room for my luggage and kids. What else can you ask for? Have your fun and make them eat it too.

Great SUV S makes it not your grandmother's SUV

I test drive luxury performance SUV's for a month, and write a full 10 page report for my friend who is a manger a a dealership in town. I also am a Mechanical Engineering project manager and a car buff. Here is what I LOVE about the SQ7. 1- Although price for the pristige at $95,000 might seem expensive, when you compare it something similar like a BMW M(either the 5 or 7 model) or the AMG 63 Mercedes(GLE or GLS), you will notice their prices are NORTH of $110,000. The bad- Fuel you only get 14-20 MPG so if you are expecting to get a gas saver, guess agahin, this is NOT the SUV for you I would recommend the Q7 if you are conscious about gas mileage because I read you get 21 MPG combined I have not driven the Q7 but the SQ7 has a robust twin turbo V8 and produces a whopping 500 HP, it does have a powerful punch to it. The con is you are getting the same gas mileage as many 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton Super Duty trucks. The good is if BMW M and Mercedes AMG had a baby it would be the SQ7. If you can AFFORD IT go for it but caveat they are not cheap even at $95,000 for the luxury model because you get parking assist and other neat features, like heated steering wheel and back seats, for not much more $5000. If you are paying this much anyways, might as well take advantage of ALL that Audi has to offer. Compared to other German rivals like Mercedes or BMW, if you want to get the most luxurious model, the price can quickly bump up to $10,000 so that is not a bad bump $5,000 for luxury. It is a lovely design and what I like about it is it DOES NOT , "LOOK AT ME HERE I AM!" It is elegant, yet subtle. If you want a cheaper alternative to this, you might want to look at the Acura MDX S type because you can purchase that for $75,000. It is a better cheaper alternative but if you have the money but don't want to spend BMW, Porsche or Mercedes money, yet get the same performance and luxury, this is your SUV. Note, if you want to go off roading, this is NOT the SUV for you, go with a body on frame SUV. I found 4 year old used for 40,000 miles for under $65,000, keep in mind the 10% LUXURY TAX so would you rather pay after taxes new $100,000 + $10,000 in Luxury taxes or used $65,000 $6,500 in Luxury taxes. You are still paying and taking a hit but you are saving $3,500 in luxury tax. The Q7 will not get you as much HP but it will get you an impressive 21 MPG combined. If you are looking at this model though you are most likely not concerned with gas prices. I would stay away from any electric/hybrid models until they perfect it and you get a little better results. Most of those electric hybrids, will only net you about 30-50 miles before you have to switch to hybrid and those charging stations are not as cheap as you think. Plus if your engine goes bad, there goes $5000,-10,000

After owning 2nd gen loaded Q7, couldn’t be possible to top it, but this has topped it in every single area. 3rd option when needed otherwise similar as SQ8, so more practical, hence in my mind truer SUV and half the price of Urus with same engine and probably more options.
