I drove a VW before and this is my first Audi. The interior and ergonomics are a big step up and thoughtfully designed. I drive mainly on the highways and handling is quite responsive for an SUV. I’m very pleased.

I usually drive the Lexus RX, bought this after a lot of research and the drive makes me appreciate the road completely. Love this car so far. It grips the road, handling and acceleration are solid. and it is a standard 4 wheel drive. The premium plus trim is nice. Good gas mileage. Compared to the Lexus, the pros are the acceleration the handling sporty ride, the cons are that you feel road more if you think that is a bad thing. Nice range for a full tank.

2020 Audi Q5 e Excellent Ride

Happy in the Q5 e, 03/14/2020
2020 Audi Q5 Prestige 4dr SUV AWD w/55 TFSI e (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 7AM)

Initial thoughts after putting 850 miles on Q5 e. It is quiet, even when the gas engine is on and very smooth. Handling is precise, but the emphasis is more on comfort than sportiness. The interior is beautiful and high quality, as would be expected. The ambient lighting is a very cool feature and you can set it to suit your taste. My limited experience with the driving assistance features is that they work well. Adaptive cruise control is great and the lane keep assist set to early keeps the car centered in the lane without too much ping-ponging. Traffic Jam assist also works well and brings the car to a complete stop. The car has been very efficient and easy to rum errands and quick trips on EV alone. In the warmer weather it easily gets 25 miles on a full charge. I've done a 140 mile trip and got 42 mpg, though I'm sure this will vary depending on conditions and driving style. Best to keep it charged up to minimize gas consumption. There are all sorts of efficiency aids to help you get the most out of every gallon of gas. This car is very quick in Dynamic mode and both the gas engine and electric motor are used. Charging is quick and easy. Best to have a 240 V outlet for charging, which does a full charge in 2 hours. Charging with a 110 V outlet works, but is painfully slow. The sound system is great, which is key in such a quiet car. I admit I look for excuses to go for a ride in this thing. It is very relaxing.

Persistent Sensor Problem At First but Fine Now

Dave B, 02/01/2021
2020 Audi Q5 Prestige 4dr SUV AWD w/45 TFSI (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)

We bought this vehicle in June 2020 as a service loaner in another state, only 3400 miles on it ... like brand new. From the beginning the front sensors acted up inappropriately going off for no reason. The local dealership service was awesome in trying to figure out the problem but it took three trips, the third time leaving it there for a week. Turned out just by switching the sensors around it took care of the problem. Weird! Other than that we love this car better than the 2015 BMW X-3 diesel we had prior which had several issues with the exhaust system. It doesn’t handle quite as good as the Beemer but better than most SUV’s out there. It’s also quieter and, I think, more elegant than the X-3. Plus from what I’ve heard it will probably be more reliable overall. We love the Apple Car Play included and it’s forever, unlike the paid subscription that BMW offers. The controls are also more intuitive and the dash configuration with the map availability in both the screen and the driver’s dash is second to none. I wish you didn’t have to turn off the start/stop feature each time you drive but that’s a minor inconvenience. Seats are comfortable both front and back with the rear seat tilting back just a little for added comfort. The engine is quiet and quick enough for most folks. If you want a rocket get the SQ5 instead. The rear cargo as a little bit less room back there than the X-3 but it’s still fine for the two of us for road trips. We opted for a gray interior so I know it will require more cleaning than the basic black but I love the look. So far so good!

Minor Annoyances

Christy G., 03/14/2021

I love this car. I've owned a VW in the past and love the quick, zippy, fun drive. The car picks up quick and love the handling. I'm not a sports car enthusiast, just a regular mom who is going to get regular use of the car such as running errands, etc. After having owned the car for about three weeks, these are my current peeves: - The housing for the automatic front seat controls on the driver's size can hurt when getting in. I would like to see some extra cushioning or lowering of the housing so it doesn't hurt my thighs upon entry. - One of my two biggest peeves: To use Apple CarPlay, I still have to plug in my phone. I just transitioned away from a Toyota Highlander because I was using an AUX cable to listen to music, but I haven't been able to do away with my phone cord on my iPhone. It's a nit, but it's another cord and other cars don't have to deal with this. - A very minor issue, but there are buttons galore on this car; however, the first time I had to fill it up I sat at the gas station for five minutes trying to figure out how to open the gas tank. Well, you just push it manually. For a high-end car, the opening of the gas tank is a bit low-fi. - My biggest peeve about this car: Very poor console storage. The only good storage is the bucket in the car door or the glove compartment. I use driving glasses and also like to keep my sunglasses in my car, but I don't have a good place for either. The center console (the section under the arm rest) only allows for a few items that are low profile, because the cell phone charging platform that covers the only two cup holders needs to slide back and cover the storage compartment when you have drinks in the cup holders. That means you can't store a small bottle of hand sanitizer unless it's laying on its side because the storage is both small and flat. - I haven't been able to figure out how to close the trunk hatch without closing it from the outside. With COVID, there are lots of drive-through pick-ups where store employees can put items in the trunk of your car without any personal interaction. However, if they don't close your trunk, you have to get out of the car to close it yourself. I've tried the button on the interior to close it but it doesn't work. I've also accidentally left the trunk open once so something about the trunk functionality is wonky (I successfully was able to close it by waving my foot under the back bumper, but I tried a few more times to no avail); it's certainly not rocket science, but I've had too much trouble with it within the past week alone to be normal. - Passenger space is a bit small, but I've downsized from a Toyota Highlander which is very spacious in the back seat. - Another reviewer mentioned the sun/moonroof. They are correct - there is a mesh cover that slides to cover the sunroof, and while I haven't noticed much by way of cabin light on a bright sunny day, I imagine that sitting out in the hot Texas sun without an opaque cover would contribute to car temperature in the summer, particularly with black interior, which is what I have.

Want a Dipstick?

The VW part number is 06K115611D, available from any VW dealer. For many years Audi has relied on an electronic bar graph readout in the infotainment system for displaying the oil level. The Audi 2.0T comes with a plug in the dipstick tube. I can understand Audi's logic where most people never check their oil level. The problem with this approach is you never can see the oil, touch it. smell it. If the head gasket started leaking you MIGHT see white creamy stuff on the oil filler cap. Color me old school, but a dipstick allows access to the oil. Aforementioned head gasket leak would readily show up on the dipstick (water in the oil) as white creamy blobs. Old oil (not changed at proper intervals) will be very black, might even smell burnt. An electronic display of the oil level says nothing about the condition of the oil, or the consistency (viscosity). Modern synthetic oils are less prone to problems, but issues can still occur. The Audi 2.0T engine is part of a family of VW engines. The newer VW 2.0T Passat engines have a dipstick. The part number for the dipstick tube is identical to the 2020 Audi 2.0T. Same for the older 1.8T engine, predecessor to the 2020 VW 2.0T. I have a 2017 1.8T Jetta; tried the dipstick in the 2020 Audi Q5, and it read the oil level perfectly, just covering all the hash marks. This Q5 has factory fill, about 1500 miles on it. Love the auto high beam. Seven speed dual clutch transmission is smooth in it's shifting. For a person who likes a manual transmission, this has won me over to automatics. 9/9/2021 - Q5 now has approximately 8400 miles on it. Took a 300 mile trip from New Hampshire to Bar Harbor, ME today. All highway mpg was a little over 31. This trip was using cruise control at 75mph, traffic permitting, with occasional spurts up to 85 where the speed alarm sounded. Over the last year around town driving mpg has been mid 20's. Cons: 1. The speed limit sign reading in conjunction with adaptive cruise, will bring the speed down to the posted speed if you are more than 5 miles over. In heavy traffic on an Interstate, this could get you rear ended. Worst example: driving thru a school zone with posted speed limit sign, at 10:00pm on a weekend night, will automatically drop your speed. This "feature" is annoying and worthless IMHO. 2. Lane keeping assist is extremely annoying. This "assist" occurs when approaching a lane marking line, not when you are on it. Also activates intermittently on curves, mostly on secondary roads. You can overcome the assist attempt by holding the steering wheel firmly, or slight counter movement of the steering wheel. Another piece of technological overkill that is of no value to me. 9/15/2023 - Car 3 years old, and since it is my wife's "last car" sits in the garage most of the time, 10,000 plus miles. She uses a 13 year old car for most driving. Wish I hadn't wasted money on prepaid Audi Care.

Overall good ride. Too many clicks and jerks

Looks great, rich interiors and good acceleration and the overall ride is good. But with the auto engine shut off an on feature vehicle jerks upon braking and releasing the brake which is annoying. You can disable the auto engine shutoff but have to do it every time you start the car as it defaults to on. Also, after start and getting up to 30mph it makes a clicking/rattling noise and Audi says its normal for the vehicle (ABS/ESC self check). My 2018 Q5 also seems to have vibration between 60-70mph, sometimes more noticeable. I need to take it to Audi to get it checked as its still under warranty. The ergonomics is not great as there is no place to rest your left elbow. The armrest on the door is too far off and too low. I ended up buying an elbow buddy from Amazon to help with this situation. The Audi MMI system has no touch screen. The system and synaptic touchpad takes a bit to get used to. I need to refer to the manual frequently to use the features in this vehicle.

Bought a new Q5 2020 in March 2020. Shortly after the purchase the car would turn off when at a red light. Filled the car with gas and the gas gauge would not work until I drove about 25 miles. Now today the key FOB stopped working and no it was not the battery. Have an appointment with Audi because they have to reprogram the FOB.

Accelerator Hesitation

You press the gas and 20 minutes later the car starts to move. I think it’s called “turbo lag“. The long delay in accelerating is so slow it’s just a matter of time before We are killed. I’ve only had it 6 months 3400 miles and I have a lease and can’t get out of it for some time. Also the infotainment system is not very straightforward. Many many many steps to do a simple function and it’s not touchscreen. Very painful. Panoramic sunroof shade doesn’t block out light it’s opaque the car gets very bright and hot. Finally fake dual exhaust tips, who are they trying to fool?

Small yet Spacious Yet Not Getting to Yes

We really like the mechanical specs for this hybrid. We enjoyed the spacious interior for a vehicle of this size. We first sat in the Q5e Premium Plus with standard seats. We felt cramped, short and wobbly. This vehicle is beautifully appointed - when you upgrade to the warm weather package to get decent seats. With that, the seats tuck you in nicely and there seems to be plenty of room. Where are the cup holders? When they upgrade so that I can add a tow hitch for bicycles and gear trailer I'll buy in. The rear seats don't fold flat. At this juncture, if I want to throw my kite gear in the back, there isn't room for two sets of gear, briefcases and ovenight bags in the far rear. We also worry about a wetsuit tub there. There is almost enough room for my medium wheeled briefcase behind the driver's seat. And what was the thinking behind placing the battery under the cargo hold? It's only to be used for dry groceries and lightweight luggage gently placed? Not for cargo? We'll have to wait for the refresh, or update, maybe good by 2022? If only the Etron were hybrid, we are not all electric here (you know they still use coal to get that electricity, right?)

There is no passenger lumbar support on the premium or premium plus models. The packages get expensive fast. The Q3 premium plus gives you almost as much room and is affordable if you lose the NAV. We are coming out of 10 years with a Q5 and are very happy in our Q3 which cost less than the Q5 cost 10 years ago!

This is a horrible purchase. Basic features like the rearview camera can't function properly on my car, the auto start/stop completely shuts my car off at stop signs/lights. The car is sluggish off the line and my sons 07 A4 has more pep. this car has virtually no storage so and the screen functions are better in a basic Honda.

The 2020 Audi Q5 driving experience and agility is okay. The biggest drawback is the Audi does not provide any option to install a remote start which seems to a must now a days due to the cold weather. The other features (which are standards in other Cars/SUVs) comes as "special packages" in this car and it costs 5K to 8K to add these packages.. There is no justifications for such a high price..!. The service cost is also too high. The 'myaudi' app is a mere waste. Majority of the time it does not work. Now a days all other manufacturers have apps. It is not big rocket science invention. Unfortunately Audi is not bale to create a properly working mobile app also.

I'm 60 years old and have owned Chevy's, Fords, Chrysler, Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar, etc. The Audi Q5 carpet is the most horrible flooring I've ever had to deal with. Every tree needle, etc. sticks in the carpet and is a nightmare to get out. The "mat" in the rear, and I call it that because it is more like cheap felt than carpet, is fraying from just moderate normal use. It is so bad that honestly I will never buy another Audi if it has this poor quality flooring.

Like my 2020 Q5 a lot: quiet, great sound system, enough storage behind back seats for me--fits golf clubs diagonally. It's a little tight for taller people in back seat. Note oil consumption comments in manual: "can burn up to 0.5 qts/600 miles." I have had to add 1 qt every 6-7000 miles which I find disturbing in a $50,000 automobile. As a retiree most of my driving is in town and have only 24,400 miles in 2yrs 9mos after buying brand new.

This car is quite literally amazing in safety. I was rear ended with my child in the car hit going around 50MPH. The Tesla that has hit me was totaled but my Audi held up amazingly and was able to be repaired. I’m convinced if I had any other car the Tesla would’ve ended up in the back seat with my son. This car is amazing!

Parts issues are too much to buy this car

2020 Audi Q5 Premium 4dr SUV AWD w/45 TFSI (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)

The car is nicely appointed and drives beautifully. But I have had a rear back up light that has been out for 6 months. It is a 50 cent bulb, but unfortunately Audi built it into a larger tail-light assembly that must be replaced for $300. Okay, I get it that the company wants to make extra money. But here's the deal. There are none of these parts available, they've been on back order for over a year (according to Audi of West Palm Beach), and Audi is still searching for a manufacturer to make the parts. You could expect this in a car that's 30 years old, but not one that is so new. With this type of customer support, I would strongly suggest that customers look at other manufacturers
