Review of the 2003 Audi A4

  • The A4 is luxurious, sporty, winterproof and a few grand cheaper than BMW's 3 Series. As such, it's one of our favorite entry-luxury cars.

  • Safety
  • Pros

Available all-wheel drive, classy interiors laden with amenities, stable handling.

  • Cons

Price goes up quickly with options, engines a little short on low-end torque.

  • What's New for 2003

The big news is the arrival of the A4 Cabriolet, a fetching drop-top version of the A4 sedan. Initially, the company will offer only one drivetrain choice -- front-wheel drive with the 3.0-liter V6 engine and continuously variable transmission. Expect to see a 1.8T version midway through the model year and a 3.0 quattro Cab by October 2003. No word yet on the possibility of a manual transmission. As if this weren't enough, Audi plans to release a coupe version of the A4 in early 2003. The rest of the A4 lineup benefits from equipment upgrades. Leather is now optional on all 1.8T models, as are 12-way power front seats. All 3.0s will come swathed in leather, with more deluxe leather optional. Previous stand-alone options for the 3.0, including xenons and satellite steering wheel controls, have been swept up into the Premium Package. A new cold weather package includes seat heaters and a ski sack, and 17-inch all-season tires are a stand-alone extra.

Great car, but reliability issues

Vehicle: 2003 Audi A4 3.0 Fwd 4dr Sedan (3.0L 6cyl CVT)

I bought this car certified used with 43k miles on it. I have driven Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, BMW and Mercedes. In general this is a great and solid feeling car. Outstanding interior which I like even better than the new models. Strong performance (acceleration a little light), and fabulous in the snow. Great car when things are working. Some reliability issues. Car got stuck in tiptronic day 1. Received flats on 3 of 4 pirelli tires that came with. Antenna had to be fixed, wipers got stuck vertical on windshield, had to replace brakes, fix broken wiper fluid tube, and engine steamed up once. I have never felt that the car would stop running on me, but things always need to be fixed.

Best luxury sport sedan under

Vehicle: 2003 Audi A4 3.0 Fwd 4dr Sedan (3.0L 6cyl CVT)

I bought my Audi A4 3.0 after test- driving BMW 3 series, Audi 1.8T, Mercedes 240, Acura 3.2TL Type S, Infinity G35, and Saab 9-3 Arc. They all drove very well, but the Audi was the best value for money. I got the car for $600/- over invoice. I must say that I am very happy with the buy. The accleration is good, the CVT gives a very smooth acceleration. The car is quite even at 90 mph. Gas milage is excellent, a full tank of 17 gallons goes 475-550 miles. Bose stereo rocks. Display looks rich. Interior is very high quality. The controls on the steering wheels are very convenient.

Small car handling, large car

Vehicle: 2003 Audi A4 3.0 Fwd 4dr Sedan (3.0L 6cyl CVT)

In the short two months since taking delivery, the A4 has been nothing but trouble free and enjoyable. Sure, the back seat is cramped for adults (just to get that out of the way). But it performs in so many ways...it can be a sporty car in the twisties or a relaxed cruiser on the highway. Styling inside and out are top shelf. Material quality is first rate. You'll wear out the owner's manual learning the all the clever features and amenities. The A4 gets 28+ mpg on the Interstate, is ULEV certified and is at the top or near the top in the insurance rating on 5 mph bumper bash test. Perfect? No, but is any car?

Just what the doctor ordered!

Vehicle: 2003 Audi A4 3.0 Fwd 4dr Sedan (3.0L 6cyl CVT)

Prior to this purchase, I had looked at the BMW 330i, Lexus IS300, & Infinity G35. The exterior/interior quality, performance, and amenities make the A4 the best choice. The CVT provides quick acceleration; the premium package offers great comfort. I can't say enough about the sports package which makes this car a joy to drive. I love the automatic heated and dimming sideview mirrors, dual climate zone, fully automatic seats, and Bose sound system. This car is SOLID!!

Vehicle: 2003 Audi A4 3.0 Fwd 4dr Sedan (3.0L 6cyl CVT)

I looked for a long time and drove many cars before I decided on the A4. Sure the IS300 and the BMW may be a little quicker 0-60, but I wanted a car that was more than speed. I feel that when you jump to this level of car that it should deliver in all categories. The Audi does that. I have always been told that for the best ride and handling, you must go with a German car. I have not been disappointed. I chose the Audi over the BMW for two reasons. The interior styling and bang for your buck. I feel that the Audi gives you a better value for your dollar. Also my experience with the service department has been great.
