Buying a Volvo XC40 in Tulsa Oklahoma

Probably the BEST small luxo-CUV out there

2019 Volvo XC40
I purchased my 2019 XC40 this past March with 30k on the clock. I traded my Audi Q5, which I loved, for no other reason than I was headed for $1600 in maintenance/repairs at 90k and had a lot of resale value given the used market. XC40 was mine at the same payment for a year less, with nothing down and a full unlimited mile warranty till March 2024! It is a T5 Momentum with every … option (driver assist, full panoramic moonroof, park assist, active cruise, cold weather package).
First, the XC40 is a direct competitor of the X1, X2, GLA 250, and Q3. Other reviews seem to compare apples to oranges. One low-star review for the XC40 compared it poorly to the CRV, which I find laughable, having my son's CR-V in the driveway to compare to directly. CR-Vs are good solid vehicles but are economical or mid-range in quality. An XC40 will out-accelerate, brake, and handle all day long with a far better AWD system.
Loves:
XC40 is far more of a raised hatchback than a CUV. Wheels are set to the corners, and the steering is quick (and you can adjust the effort) and accurate. Mine has 19" wheels which are big enough to give it that "HotWheels" look from a distance while still providing a good quality ride on rough roads (the norm here in NW PA). If you live where the roads are rough, I'd steer clear of the 20 or 21" wheel package - not much better in looks, yet your tires are going up in price + rougher ride.
Acceleration/transmission: I got the Polestar optimization after the sale. Polestar optimization is a full-factory warranted ECU tune. Not much additional hp up top, but a whole 40 ft. lb of torque and extra hp in the midrange, plus (and most worth the price) a remap of the transmission. When you read XC40 reviews compared to the X1/X2, remember that these cars' transmissions are the SAME 8-speed auto as in the XC40. The Polestar tune takes care of any hesitations some reviews have reported and makes the car shift as good as the X1/X2. I can get low 6s all day long on my Dragy with a light power brake in Comfort mode. 1/4 mile is high 14s. Every bit as good as a sporty hatchback like a Civic Si or GTI (except the current generation). I miss the blistering speed of my Q5 (tuned 0-60 w/launch control 5.3 and 1/4 mile at 13.8), but the engine matches the suspension and handling perfectly. No, you aren't the fastest car, but you can feel confident merging, and passing without driving like a maniac or pushing beyond legal limits. The mid-range torque is excellent. C&D said the engine is grainy and makes 'fart' noises. I'd don't get that at all. The engine is no V10, V8, or BMW I-6, obviously. It makes a nice growl on acceleration and is 100% unobtrusive otherwise.
Comfort/interior. Wow. The Audi was great but very German, very businesslike, sober, and devoid of any amusement (the Q3 interior is similar in style to Q5 to keep this fair). The XC40 interior is happy and minimalist. The seats are uber-comfortable for my 6 ft. 180lb frame. One minor, minor quibble, I'm long-armed and legged, and I wish the telescoping steering would come out another 1/2" as I like to drive a little more F-16 pilot style than desk chair upright (I thought Swedes were tall and thin too?). The center screen is gorgeous and visible in all lighting conditions. I have it set up for Nav on top, my USB music, phone and then the weather app bottom. Yes, it is not as user-friendly as the Audi, but once you take the time to set it up, it works quickly and you shouldn't be messing with it as you drive anyway. Weather app is awesome, as weather warnings will put the current radar up on the home screen so you can see what you are possibly heading into. You CAN shut off auto start-stop and keep it that way. In a big city, yes it may save fuel, but in a small town with few stoplights and more stop signs, any gas savings are minimal. No one brings that up, but at a stop light, the system makes sense; it may take 20-30 seconds for a light to change. In a town with more stop signs, people need to keep moving when it is their turn to go. With a start-stop system, you get too many people waiting for that extra second and then trying to go. This causes a lot of unnecessary headaches. The panoramic sunroof is beautiful and doesn't cut into headroom. The backseat room is great for two full-sized adults. I can sit behind my regular driver seat position with plenty of knee room in the back. I regularly drive four kids around with no complaints (teens). The trunk is adequate for this size CUV, I like the grocery bag system where you can fold the floor to give yourself a deeper trunk and three hooks for grocery bags. The hardcover for the cargo area rises with the hatch. It can be removed, but it is not as quick as the roller-type ones used in other CUVs, but does look far more attractive. Heated seats and wheel are awesome and heat fast with three level settings for each. Steering wheel controls are logical (cruise on the left, audio/phone on the right) and I use them 100% of the time for phone and audio. Steering wheel is fat, and just the right amount of grippiness. The navigation map is in the middle of the tachometer and speedometer, whether navigation is programmed or not. You can set four different looks for the displays, all attractive and sharp, and turn off the map in the center cluster if you like. Some complain about the lining of the side pockets in the doors. Really? In an entry-level luxo-CUV? You never touch it. Looks fine, and it is durable. The door pockets are HUGE as they moved the speakers out. You can put 2L bottles or a laptop in the front pockets. Center storage is great, with an inductive charger pad for the phone, a little garbage can and a deep console with lid. The beverage holders are of different heights which is great.
Exterior. IMO, the best-looking small CUV, period. It looks like a toy car (in a good way) from any angle, with the big wheels pushed to the corners, the roof line, squared-off hood and wide flanks it looks like a cross between a Rok-em-Sok-em robot head and a HotWheels car. They managed this look while still keeping it mature and professional looking (cough-cough Civic Type-R....great car, but just looks like a toy in a bad way in and out). Paint is thick and durable. We have lots of tar-and-chip roads here, and it has held up in at least the six months I've had it. Doors slam with a quality feel, nice and solid. Hood has two struts, no cheapy support rod.

Button for moonroof tries to do too much in one button. Hit it the wrong way and you get sunshade moving or something else you didn't intend while driving. How about two buttons, Volvo, one for the glass and one for the sunshade?
Drive mode doesn't save between starts. If you want Dynamic (replaced by Polestar mode if you upgrade), Comfort, Eco or your individual preferences, you must select EVERY TIME you drive. It always defaults to comfort. Some argue this is to meet EPA requirements, which is BS, as my Audi would save the mode between starts.
The telescoping steering wheel needs another 1" for leggy drivers.
The active cruise is over-safe. Set it for the 'closest' setting to follow the car ahead you are 10 lengths back. Semi-trucks will cut into that space!!! My wife's Ascent does a far better job on a busy highway.
235/50R19 snow tires are expensive.
I wish there was a twin-charged T6 version. I'm a lead foot, sorry.
