Very under rated Car that was misunderstood

2004 Volvo V40
If your looking at an old V4 wagon to consider beating around in read this:
In the year 2022. today...
I'm still driving a 2004 first Gen Volvo v4
It has been and is a fantastic car.
Mind you , its not a 960 wagon, my choice of the most beautiful older Volvos.
I have owned many Volvos and the V40 is obviously a blended car. Does it has tell tail signs of the Mitsubishi influences in it … styling? , yes.
It is More similar to a Mitsubishi Charisma, or a Ford escorts' wagon.
But it is neither of those in its quality or engineering.
It has more IN common with the engineering of a 960 or 850
With a low pressure turbo 4 cly or even a 2.5 cyl 5 cyl, and rear Multi link suspension.
SRS impact systems , and one of the higher rate safety scores by NIST
These things make it a Volvo, It has had the full attention of the Volvo engineering that it is a Volvo.
It has a 1.9Turbo 175 hpr engine, so it is not exactly slow,
A 5 speed automatic trans with Winter mode locking differential
something only Volvo has done for two decades.
it has an Asian trans made in Japan, which and always has been a volvo transmission option.
Even the original famous 4cly red block engines were not truly designed buy Volvo alone.
They were a collaboration too, instead of developing a unique and expensive engine for themselves, Volvo saved the money from developing costs and bought the engine from PSA (Peugeot-Citroën) and made it better in terms of reliability and performance .Naturally aspirated version (B234F). The head was designed for Volvo by either Cosworth or Porsche. Fuel injections systems were made by various companies like Bosh and Solex.
Even the famous white block engine in most Volvo's were a joint venture by Peugeot, Volvo and Porch. called a PVR engine. ( the white block that came in five cly and six cyl inline)
So Volvos are nothing new to collaborations
you may have just not really thought about how they actually bought it all together.
It may be you also don't really know how well built some Mitsubishis are made too. they have won many world automobile awards, and are a car driven by more people in other country then Volvo.
My 2004 V40, has an originally 31,000k sticker cost.
You paid for a fair amount of luxury in 2004.
It still gets 37 to 40 mpg on the highway, and drive very smooth.
Has had no real issues, and always gets me there.
It has a nimble feel and is plenty fast enough to get out of its own way, un like the may 240s I've owned
It has none of the high maintenance cost compared to the 850s I've owned.
I have only 130k on it , But it is common to see them with over 250k on them, if the body is taken care of.
So if you like the quality of the Volvo collaborations so far, or you've driven before, and are looking for an older Volvo, I would not hesitate to pick up a low cost V40 shooter to get around inexpensively, while doing it in some Volvo style.
