2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid
I liked the Prius hybrid concept, but found the style beyond what I could tolerate. So when the Corolla Hybrid was released, that barrier was removed, and I bought one.
I was surprised at how quiet it was on the freeway, far lower wind noise than I expected. Gas mileage is as expected, excellent. Handling is very good as well. Overall feels very solid. It does get a bit buzzy when … called upon to accelerate hard or go up steep hills quickly, but you can't expect otherwise for this kind of vehicle, and it is only occasionally that the engine becomes obvious. Transitions in electric/gas acceleration and regen/friction braking are very smooth.
I only give a 4-star rating for two annoyances.
One: no spare, jack, or lugwrench; just a bottle of goo and a pump to repair minor punctures. I'm not comfortable with that, so it cost ~$300 to get a full-size spare and related tools (aftermarket). Fortunately, there is enough room in the trunk well for a full-size spare.
Two: the rocker panel (the plastic trim just below the doors on the outside) is apparently designed for looks, but causes minor issues. It sticks out an inch or so beyond the door line, making it look low and racy I guess... but then entry and exit is slightly more difficult. In addition, the sadistic designer made it relatively pointy, and it can be a real ankle-banger if you're not careful.
At the moment, due to some strange glitch, I'm still unable to register for the Toyota Owner's group, where you can do a few things online... but that has nothing directly to do with the car itself, so I didn't de-rate it further.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the car, and would probably give it 4.5 stars if I could do that.
