My first impression of this car was that it will be fuel efficient which I can now assure you that it is NOT. I had read reviews that this car isn't really efficeint so I convinced myself by telling myself that I'm buying a quality product. It has been six months and take my word on this. It's not efficient for it's class. It's a tiny car, with very little power, you would think it gives twice as much mileage as a car like Corolla but it gives same result at the gas station. I had a flat tire at 2000 miles from a tiny piece of metal and Roadside assistance took 5 hours to arrive in rural area near a smart center. Inefficient and uncomfortable. I don't know how I got fooled into this.

I would only recommend this as a strictly commuter car if your commute is 5-10 mi each way. Parking is a breeze in NYC where parking in anything larger than a smart is a nightmare. However, when the weather is below 35 degrees, the cabin is always cold (even with heated seats) and the heat robs 20-40% of your range if you use it consistently. The 70hp boost they claim rarely kicks in when you step on the pedal. I've had the car for 4 mo now (since Nov '13) and range anxiety has been a major problem during the polar vortex days. My commute is only 15 mi each way and I always get home with just 20% of power from a 100% charge. If the range would be 100 mi with heat/AC on, this would be perfect

2011 - Love my Smart - sad to see them go.

Needed commuter car as I have 34 mile one-way commute - Having seen these in Germany in '06 was glad to see them come to US in '08 - waited couple years before purchase. Purchased new from Tulsa dealer for 'cuteness' factor & MPGs; Did purchase extended warranty because it was a 'benz. Ran great until 24K miles- took it in to OKC Mercedes/Smart and needed new engine (2nd cylinder out - seems to be a known issue) - had to fight to get them to honor warranty - but finally they did (had a salesman actually tell me they 'hated' the smart but had to sell them for the 'offset' credit). No issues with new engine. Drove without a flaw until '17 (6yrs) needed new coil. Drove great until shifting issue (Nov '18) - took to Euro shop said was master cylinder (which controls shifting) $1K repair; Is in shop now (Jan 20) for busted motor mount, master cylinder & bent arm (? $2K). I am also discovering ways to 'reset' the computer to adjust shifting issues - wondering about first mechanic now .... Currently have 114K miles - has been a bit costlier to drive (repairs) but my '95 F150 never met a gas station it didn't love so have enjoyed this Smart! $20/week fuel and this Smart is a fun car to drive! While I hope to get a couple more years out of it, I will be selling it (maybe) because I now have 2 grands and - most importantly - when I do need a repair I have to haul it a minimum of 60 miles to the nearest mechanic that works on Euro cars (hassle factor). If I were in a city with local repairs available, or was younger and could work on it myself, I would drive this into the ground. Other than listed repairs, just basic maintenance. I have enjoyed my Smart - it has worked well for the reason I purchased it!! Its interesting but I am also looking at a Honda Fit as a replacement (see ErnieB's post) :-)

2013 Smart Fortwo 62kw Cabrio: The Best Car Ever

There is no car like my 2013 Smart Fortwo 62kw Cabrio 84hp; from engineering technology to comfort and performance. Owned from Mercedes 200 Sedan and Nissan Pathfinder to Hummer One and Chrysler long-wheel-base Voyager BUT my greatest joy has been with this 2013 Smart Fortwo 62kw Cabrio. The car is a breeze and immense pleasure to drive; especially, in automatic; best way to enjoy it. Accelerates and leaves all cars behind, at traffic lights take-off, because of the Turbo. At 6.2ft tall, the comfort room is unbelievable with a passenger of same height and bigger. I don't get the advertised mileage; just 340kms for the 33-litre tank capacity; averaging 10kms per litre. But, who cares? Consumption is still comparatively low for the performance pleasure. These days, the Smart Fortwo [1st and 2nd Generation] are the ONLY cars, to my mind, that are easily identifiable. All other cars, except a few makes, look-alike, until you check the Logos. The 3rd Generation looks more like a Renault, until you check the Logo. Prefer the 1st and 2nd Generation. A wonderful car to own. Always looking for excuse to drive it. On the road, the other big cars [Adults] often wonder what this small car [Kid] is doing on the road, like the road is no place for it; until you leave them behind, at traffic lights take-off. Understand that the 52 kw 70hp has same performance, with aspirated engine; yet to drive one. Either way, the Smart Fortwo, is it. Easy to maintain. Change oil as much as possible for smoother engine sound and ride. When I start the car, in the mornings, I don't rev. I, just, let it get to the number ONE, on the idle-speed, indicator on the dash-board counter. It may take about two minutes; and, you will notice and hear the difference in engine sound from kick-start to idle-speed. Like all things in life, look after it and it will look after you. I don't plan on another car. The children can bring the long-wheel-base Chrysler Voyager if they want our family of seven to move in one go or block.. The Smart Fortwo is a Statement car, Impeccable taste and Attention grabber. The only car in a gathering that the ladies and children will remember and talk about when they get home; at the envy of the men folks with huge cars who expected to be the admired and attention-getters.. Better a small car and big brain than a big car with little or no brain, at all. Big is not always better. I can write about Smart Fortwo, ad infinitum, But take my word for it. A wonderfully engineered car. Love it or hate it. Forgive any typo errors.

I don't own one of these, but I use Car2Go in Austin, which is a car sharing company that uses only Smart cars. I was so surprised how fun this thing is to drive, even out of the city and on the highway. For only 75hp, this thing really goes quickly. Great interior space as well. But Edmonds cons are spot on. That transmission is pretty harsh, and that break pedal is hard to get used to at first. It feels like it's not going to stop.
