Good car

Bought this car in late 2008 and in the few months I have owned it everything has worked well. Always has started on the first try in the Wisconsin winter (we had 20 below actual temps for a couple of days and no problems and it is parked outside). Drives very nice. Gas mileage is not the best of course for this car as I get around 20mpg with mostly freeway miles. If you are looking for a sound cheaper, older car this one may work for you.

I own a white, 1995 Cougar XR-7 - V8, of course! Bought her brand new, she is now over 15 yrs. old. She's had a few problems recently - but, man, she has been a GREAT car - I Love Her! And her looks are awesome! They changed the grill in '96, and that small change took the "great looks" factor down a few notches. It's amazing how a tiny change can effect the total look of a car. She has been a damn good car - best I've ever owned!! I wish they would bring her back - but looking EXACTLY like the '95 model - NO CHANGES on the exterior!! GO FORD!! (or Mercury - haha).

Good value

I bought a V8 1995 Cougar slightly used in 1996. Overall, it has been a good car, though it has been pampered. I mostly keep it in the garage as a third car, and have averaged only 4500 miles per year. For a 2-door sedan, it is quite comfortable, though I would not want to be in the back seat during a long trip. Interior materials are good quality, exterior design is sexy, and trunk is reasonably spacious. The only problem I have found is a sub- standard transmission. I have had to change the fluid twice (in less than 60K miles) due to rough shifting between gears. I have never encountered this problem with any other car. Other than this annoyance, the car has been worth owning.

The best car ever made by Ford. I owned the V8. It was the combination of a sport and luxury car that didnt felt so tiny, but didnt felt so heavy, mantaining that balance and the suspesion was incredible, never , malfunctioneed, smooth yet powerful. Simply the best.

Great car for 13 years!

I owned a 1995 Mercury Cougar from August 1997 until August 2010. The car ran great for the entire time. Only parts I replaced were radiator, alternator, battery, brakes, air flow sensor - really just routine maintenance. Salt on Missouri roads led to some body rust in last few years. Burned/leaked a tiny bit of oil last few years. Gifted car to a friend and would guess they'll be able to drive it for another few years. Great car - would love to buy another one. Great motor, good power and smooth, decent mileage (especially for V8), sharp looking car. Relatively cheap to maintain - even with high miles. Sorry to let this go!

I have owned this car since 2004 after we bought it from a lady who had moved from Florida to Illinois. The car requires low maintenance, but does have significant problems which are consistent with being a 15 year old car. The transmission has been replaced once and still has a few issues, the driver's side automatic window's electronics have been replaced and need to be replaced again due to intermittent window power. Outer coat of paint is chipping, the tie rods are going, the suspension sounds terrible, the windshield washer lines are corroded, and the back seat is too small. But again, this is a 15 year old car which has seen a lot of work and abuse. Still works!

Overall it is an OK car. I was shocked to read that other reviewers feel it accelerates hard, it seems a bit lazy off the line (too high gearing), but it is adequate once you hit 20. Certainly nothing to brag about! Could use an extra 50 horsepower. Pretty flat torque curve. Cornering is quite good with aftermarket 225/60/15 tires - a great improvement in handling, and looks! Problems: Air conditioning compressor seized. Alternator needed to be rebuilt. Torque converter flutters into and out of lock-up - which I understand is a chronic problem. Mass air flow sensor needed to be replaced. Leather seats tear.

I was eight when I sat in the Cougar for the first time. Eight years later it's my first car and another four years later I'm still driving it and nothing major has broken or been replaced. Probably has 200,000+ miles on it now (the odometer doesn't work but that was a mechanics doing!) Driver's side window recently stopped working but I was expecting the power windows to give up eventually and 14 years is a good run of almost daily use! It still has great speed and acceleration. Build quality is excellent, still looks great!

Powerfull V8, Wide comfortable leather, cloth seats, Extra large trunkspace, smooth quiet ride, handles great with rear wheel drive plenty of power and 4 wheel independant suspension. I'd buy another one if they still made them. I may have the engine rebuilt at 200,000 miles. Never a problem, doesn't use oil and I use only synthetic Castrol 5-50 wt oil. I Change trans oil every year and flush the cooling system every other year. Runs cool. If you find a good one with low miles, buy it!

I love this car!! You get a lot of car for the money when compared to the competition. I like V-8 power and RWD, that is one of the main reasons I bought a Cougar. The ride is sporty, yet comfortable. The performance is better than I expected. This car has exceeded my expectations.

Bought car off a friend after his lease was over. I hate the looks of the exterior (looks like an old persons car). I found the car an excellent purchase. It has taken some pretty long road trips and has been my wifes main form of transport since 1999. We have never had any problems with the car. Personally I have never ridden in a more comfortable car. Handling and power are extremely nice. Std V-8 makes passing a sinch. Loaded with every extra--and no problems with any of them. I only hope my next car will be as great as this one has been! Super car!

The only problems that I have found with my car is the location of the seat belts(back too far) and the location of the cup holder. The ashtray is also too small. However I really love my car.

I bought my cougar five years ago for $1000, 150k miles on it and had to make minimal repairs to it since. I put another 50k miles on it at least (the mile meter eventually broke, but it didn't affect the drivability) until it eventually died a few months ago. Drove it back and forth to work, and all over the country for 5 fun years only replacing the alternator, battery, brake pads and tires. The driver door handle eventually broke on both sides, but again, it still drove like a champ. I'm not sure I will ever find a car that I love as much as her. Definitely recommend to buy if you can find one with a decent amount of miles on it.

I absolutely love this car it handles great. the v6 is a little underpowered but that is to be expected i recently had my high school change the oil in it and thanks to them i am now looking at a 4.6L 95 cougar the v8 has just the right amount of power for the size of the car.

I've owned this 95 Cougar since 6/97 The car has preformed exceptionally well during this time. Mtc. has been minimal having replaced spark plug wires and water pump and vaccumn hose as the only major repairs. Cougar gets 23mpg on the highway and 20mpg in town. I'd buy another Mercury in a heartbeat.

I bought this car from a man who had bought it for his sister, but she bought a truck instead. I bought it in 2006 for 4,500 dollars with 72,255 miles on it. I only drive it in the summer. For those who don't know the Cougar is a more upscale and luxurious upgrade over the Ford Mustang. It has the same engine 4.6 liter V-8 engine as the 95 mustang. The only thing that has ever gone wrong with it since it was brand new, was some failed mechanics in the power antenna. Greatest car I've ever owned.

One owner for 150,000 miles. This 8 year old car with 150,000 miles rides better than my new 2003. Still drive the Cougar to work. Very reliable and low maintenance vehicle. Wish they still made them. V8 is the only way to go in this car. The only problem has been the plastic headlight covers. Plastic has turned cloudy twice and had to be replaced. No engine, transmission or major mechanical problems. Car interior still is quiet with no rattles. Why did I buy a new car?????

My parents bought me this car when I turned 18 and now I'm 25 and still driving it. 160,000 miles later it still runs like the day I drove it home from the dealership. This Cougar is an absolute dream to drive. Many long trips were taken. It's very comfy and glides down the highways with ease. I wish I could drive it for 160,00 more miles, but I know it can't last forever. My only disappointment is that they quite making this large coupe. I didn't like the small one and now they aren't making it at all. Too bad...this was a fine automobile.

This is exactly what a luxury sport coupe should be. At high speeds, it performs without any problems and is VERY quiet. The drivers console is ergonomically designed, everything is within easy reach of the driver. The worst problem with the car would be the use of Aluminum heads on a steel engine block. Invariably the heads warp causing problems with the head gasket. The cost to repair the head gaskets is about as high as a complete engine rebuild. Also my transmission is in need of being rebuilt or replaced. What things have needed repair on this car are all major.

When about 20 years old, some wiring and tubing melted, rubbed,or deteriorated in "hard to access" places under the engine and around the transmission. A few thousand dollars later, the xr7 was again a wonderful high performance car.
