Fun, Fun, Fun
Here is a car that you want to drive. Sporty handling with a sedan comfort. Good value for the money.
Sharp handling, no grunt
After driving a Camaro Z28 and various sportbikes I am shocked to see that a family-hauler can handle this well. Smooth (manual) shifter. The front wheel drive is a little disappointing and there's virtually no torque below 3000RPM but all in all it is an excellent package at a very good price. Dealers are willing to let it go several thousands less MSRP (mine was about MSRP-$8000 - what a steal!). Highly recommended if you don't absolutely need RWD.

Disappointed at first. 20 yrs later it's great!
Four months new and under 3K miles, so not enough info on mechanics, etc. I do a LOT of errands and have some things I love and HATE, namely: shifter - "sporty" automatic zig-zag maze made like a manual. Having carpal tunnel and shifting 10x or more a day between PRD absolutely kills the hand/wrist. Pickup: extremely slow and extremely jerky, and I mean with a pronounced jerk when stepping on gas. A full 1-1 1/2 seconds to kick in, which makes it useless to dangerous when passing and power/speed is needed. Test drove 20 minutes or so but never noticed the bad pickup, and shifting wasn't done as many times as would be done in a normal day, so it wasn't noticed. HATE radio volume depending on speed! 2021 UPDATE: Well, I've had to get used to the car. Have had it now 16 years with 88k miles. Maybe the volume of the radio going up and down depending on speed is broke, or I don't notice it anymore after all this time. Issues I've had over the years are: replaced center dash in 2018 (w/radio clock, etc.) because the LEDs were only showing part of the numbers/letters and the lights were flickering. Headliner falling down in 2019 (tacked it up with those cork board message pins). In 2020 had to replace both headlights because the lenses were so yellow they couldn't be refurbished. 2 yrs later the driver's side headlight seal broke and had to get another headlight. Jan of 2021 I'm told there's an oil leak, apparently not bad, but to keep an eye on it. Gaskets that are needed to fix it are not sold by Mazda anymore, but ARE sold by other online companies. Got mine from RockAuto.com. Got the headlight there too. Haven't had any real engine issues except for this oil leak now. Regular maintenance as far as brakes, tires, oil changes, etc. I absolutely hate leather seats - hot and sticky in the summer and ice cold in the winter, so mine has cloth seats, which are getting a little threadbare, as one poster said, from swiveling when getting in and out. Rust along the rear driver's side wheel well (NOT the passenger side as some posters say is common) and a few dots on the hood. All fixable. I've come to love this car and will do everything I can to keep it. I have the things on top of the car that keep anything you put up there off the actual car hood. Forget what they're called. Absolutely LOVE the amount of space - 60 cu ft !!! with the seats down. You wouldn't believe what I've been able to get in the back. Went looking for something else couple years ago and I don't like the SUVs out there. Seems that's all there is. Plus, NOTHING has the cargo space of my wagon. Every dealer said the closest they could come to it is with a cargo van or minivan. Don't want either. And, although I've gotten mocked for it, I DO really love the round vents that you can aim with pinpoint accuracy. I think every single car made should have them. I've gotten many offers over the years to buy it. A lot of people like the look and want the style and capacity of a wagon and they lament the fact that no one makes wagons anymore. Upshot is I'd buy this again if they made it. I had the very first wagon Mazda made and it lasted 12 years before it blew a head gasket. This is the 2nd wagon Mazda made, so I'm told, and I have it also. Doesn't matter what goes wrong with it I will try to have it fixed until it can't be fixed anymore (at least that's my thought now). BTW, it's listed it as a 4 door, but it's actually a 5 door with the rear hatch. Update: Jan 2023. Had an issue with something leaking in engine area. Dealer doesn't know what it is or where it is. They had it for 3 weeks !! and said it's either a head gasket or I need a new engine. WHAT??? A minimum of $7-8000 they said. !!!! Took it to an independent mechanic and they had it for 3 days and found it was a cracked radiator. Less than $3,000 with rust they fixed on driver's side rear wheel well. Some rust showing on pass rear now. Will get that fixed, along with the hood spots, before it gets too expensive. Has almost 100k miles now. Hope it lasts much longer.

Be careful over 100k
I purchased my '05 Mazda 6 in 2007 with 20k miles. The car ran great, had lots of pep and was very reliable. After 120k miles I started noticing the oil level going down with no noticeable oil leak. It eventually would not start and when I brought it to the dealer they found that the valve seals were leaking and the PVC valve was blowing oil into the cylinders as well as the throttle body. After having the those 3 things replaced and spending $1500, it is running fine. Perhaps this is considered routine maintenance or the dealer ripped me off so beware.
I LOVE THIS CAR
I have had my Mazda wagon for a few months now and I LOVE it. I have never driven such a wonderful vehicle. It is sporty, fast, and very roomy. I have had no problems al all. No one in my family had ever owned a Mazda before and 2 have bought cars since. This car is wonderful for familys or even single people who like to haul or buy stuff.
