Suspension problems at 21,000 miles

2018 Hyundai Sonata SEL 4dr Sedan w/Prod. End 5/18 (2.4L 4cyl 6A)

I have a 2018 Sonata that I drive a modest amount and have always kept in a garage. Even though the car had only about 21,000 miles, a noise started coming from underneath the car. Numerous visits to a dealership and two quality repair shops showed it was issues with the suspension that was only partially solved by replacing the engine mount and sway link bars (about $1,400 out of my pocket). The most recent shop was amazed these parts were wearing out so soon and had trouble getting the engine mount, what they said was an indication of a widespread problem with that part. Further diagnosis to completely solve the problem was to replace the entire struts (another $1,300). I didn't do that, contacted Hyundai and was told they couldn't provide me any help because the car is beyond the 5-year warranty even though it has such relative low mileage. So now I'm looking at over $2,500 in repairs to a car that doesn't even have 24,000 miles on it. Or I can live with it (not a safety hazard at this time but eventually will be) and hear a constant reminder of this problem. So keep in mind when considering a Hyundai that, based on my experience, substandard parts may have been/are being used on these cars.

Front seating &dash board feels spacious. Blind spot and rear camera standard on base model was the clincher.

Great warranty! Purchased new, have just over 5,000 miles in a year. No problems thus far. Dislike that the doors will swing closed when not fully opened with the slightest breeze. This sucks when you are half way out and the door slams into your knees. Seems like the doors have to be in the fully opened position to prevent this and even this is not a 100% guarantee. Do not like the fact that you need to remove a guard with about 8 - 10 screws to change the oil and filter. If you keep it off then the pulleys and belts are subject to road spray and the like. Do not like the fact that the automatic transmission is sealed and you cannot check the fluid level. This is not just a Hyundai problem however. Dash display could be easier to navigate. Also the tire pressure monitor will not display unless the vehicle is in motion. I DO like the fact that each tire pressure is displayed on the screen however, you don't have to guess which tire is low like in some vehicles. Interior plastics seem a little cheap but all in all this is the second Sonata that I have owned and I traded in a Toyota Camry for this car. I like the Sonata much better! After driving for a year and a half, I get a notice to come in for an engine software update. This update is supposed to sense engine vibration and put the car in safe mode before you blow the engine, some Sonatas have had engine problems since 2011. There have been problems after this software update as people have had to have wiring harnesses changed out etc. I was going to wait until they got the wrinkles out of the software but I started having downshifting problems recently. The car would lurch forward when slowing to a stop from second to first gear as if someone had stepped hard on the brakes. This did not happen at every stop but enough to let you know that something was wrong and annoy you as well. Hyundai has a TSB technical service bulletin about the transmission problem but no recall. I brought the vehicle in and had both the engine and transmission software updates in June 2019 at 9,500 miles. All has been great since, no problems with the engine and the transmission shifts much smoother. I still like the car and hope nothing else happens.

Except More -- Get Less

Hyundai really cheaper out this car. I had a 2017 Sonata and loved it. This 2018 Sonata lacks features that the 2017 had. Things like Panoramic sun roof, trunk lock, cheapo tail lights, thinner seat belt material, missing rear seat pouch, missing USB compartment door. This should have been a stripped down version. On a positive note, the car has good power, handles well and is in general good looking. The one thing that upset me most was the inability to lock the trunk. Yes it closes. If you give the fob to a valet, he would have access to the trunk. If you park you car and someone breaks a window for entry, the can't open the trunk by pressing the trunk switch. Your valuables will not be protected. How stupid is this? For this reason I'm sorry I leased this car. I won't buy or lease another Sonata.
