01 Sport Trac
Love the look of the truck and the interior size. Hauls family well. However, had it in the shop for the first time after owning it for 1 month to replace the thermostat. I've now replaced three thermostats, 2 waterpumps, brakes, rotars, and various sensors. I no longer have any trust in this vehicle for traveling long distances.
Ford Explorer Sport Trac
My Sport Trac is very comfortable and fun to drive. Fuel Mileage is decent at 19 mpg average. Although it has ample pep, considering todays technology, Ford could improve performance and fuel economy just a wee bit better. Before I purchased this vehicle I was undecided between an SUV or pickup, but the Sport Trac has proven to be a nice mix of each. Would recommend! You get plenty of looks too.

Mechanical Problems
We have had several repairs to the truck including brake replacement. The major problem now is the transmission. We need to repair and/or rebuilt transmission at $1,500 to $1,800. One service shop tried a fix for $300 after finding a service bulletin on it. The transmission is still slipping in third gear. It is now at a reputable transmission shop to be repaired. We were told by them that there was an article in a transmission magazine about this problem in this particular vehicle and that also Ford is not very good about transmission recalls even though there seems to be major problems with this model. This is why I have always purchased Toyota.
It Works for ME!!
First, I agree and disagree with what has been written in the other reviews. Yes, GAS mileage is not great...17.4 for me, mostly highway. BRAKES have not been a problem. Still have original rotors and replaced pads @ 38K. WHO KNEW! Stop tailgating and your brakes might last a little longer!! Functionality has been phenominal. I'm in sales and I haul large equipment often. I even mounted an Aluminum toolbox in the bed and still have room to haul. A V8 would be nice and a larger fuel tank would be in order as well. I AM VERY PLEASED.
Nice little truck
Always runs well, designed with ordinary maint (brakes, oil, etc.) in mind. Very simple to work on. Fun for offroading, but fairly low clearance. Several safety recalls, but no problems under warranty.
