Excellent overlooked choice
Just switched from a 2005 Sienna to 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT. The Caravan has much more torque making it more responsive in normal driving, brakes are far better, excellent handling. Feels like a relatively nimble mid size sedan. Surprising to look behind and see how large the interior is. Lots of open space in the cabin is great for holding stuff and allowing easy movement within the cabin. Build quality appears to be excellent. Much better choice than a Sienna. Sienna is all hype. Gas mileage on the Caravan although rated 18/25 has been better than the Sienna rated 19/26.
Worst Van ever
Back in July of 2006, we bought a Dodge Grand Caravan, dumb move, it was terrible, we hated it! The ride was rough, seats were uncomfortable, visibility was awful, and we only got an average of about 13 mpg! Not good enough with these soaring gas prices. So after 13 months, we traded it in for a Kia Rondo, much much better.

early junk yard tenant
Vehicle was running perfectly until engine started dying randomly. Sometimes it would start right back up. Sometimes it wouldn't start for days. Other times, it would start back up 20 minutes later. Brought it to a shop that told me it needed a tune up. $500 later it still had the same problem. (No refunds on unneccesary repairs however). Next they replaced the the cars main computer. Nope. Not that either. So $1000 or so in and no solution. I brought it it to the dealership thinking maybe they'd have a better idea of what to do. They called me and told me it was fixed. I went to pay them their $500 and pick it up. Vehicle wouldn't start. Did I mention that shops don't give refunds on repairs that don't fix the problem. They told me that maybe they could try replacing the connector to the pcm (main computer) for ..... another $240! Nice. I respectfully declined as I now believed they were just crap shooting. I finally started reading forums and found that this exact problem is common with the grand caravan. The worst case scenario being that the wiring harness shows no sign of damage but the wires underneath ARE in fact damaged. A new wiring harness and installation would cost in the multiple thousands of dollars. However, being in denial that a perfectly running car could be sent to the junkyard because of something like this, I parked it in a garage for a couple years. I finally ran into a a shop that almost exclusively fixes fleet grand caravans for medical and handicap transportation companies. He assured me he could fix it. $700 dollars later, it actually did drive perfectly for a couple days. Unfortunately, on about the third day I was driving it, it started dying again. At first, it would start right back up. After several die outs and restarts that day, it finally wouldn't start again. I called a cab and about 5 minutes before the cab arrived , it started. However , it was late at night and I didn't want to cancel cab only to have the car die 5 minutes later. I went back to restart it a couple times over the next few weeks. I didn't bother to drive it , as I didn't trust it and didn't have time for adventures. I finally went back a few days ago and spent a couple days trying to get it started to no avail. I have now given it away as a parts car. If you find your caravan having this type of problem, DO NOT waste your money. Just get rid of it. I spent probably more than I've listed here and even if I had gotten the car to be reliable again, it would have been worth $1200-1500. I would not recommend buying a used caravan because of the possibility of that this could happen. Problems that can be fixed are tolerable, but dodge in general is known for these types of mystery electrical problems that send vehicles to the junk yard. I highly doubt that I will ever buy another dodge vehicle ever.

Can you spare some oil?
Bought our van new in late '05. Was perfect the whole time it was under warranty. As soon as we ticked past 36K everything went to heck and FAST! EGR valve, water pump, power sliding door motors, transmission is slipping, burns up tires and brakes, and the icing on the cake is that last year it starting burning a quart of oil every 1000 miles! Now a year later, it has used to a quart every 500 miles! What a joke! We are trading it off in a few weeks and will never buy another Chrysler/Dodge product again! I am so disappointed in this van. We had planned on keeping for a long long time and now are forced to go look for another vehicle. The re-sale value is crap as well.
Very Impressed
The van has a much improved and quieter ride over our 2000 Chrysler Gr VoyagerSE model. 3.8 V6 is very smooth and gets better gas mileage than the 3.3 V6. We looked at several Dodge/Chrysler vans before settling for this one. Build quality in terms of fit and finish seemed suspect with some of the vans. This one however had none of those negative traits. Great van at a great price Sure resale value isn't there, but I don't trade that often, so resale value isn't an issue for me. I would buy again.
