We can’t stop laughing

We’ve only had the Bolt a week and generally like it. We’ve had a Tesla model 3 for almost 3 years so this will be a comparison. First things first.. I like driving the bolt (in L mode). Acceleration and braking are fine and it is pretty smooth on city streets. The 3 is definitely more sporty to drive but you feel rough roads more. Since the Bolt lives mostly on SF streets, it is a better fit. I prefer the 3 on the freeway. On the experience of being in the car... this is not a fair comparison... the 3 is way more inviting, especially for the front seats. My kids say they like the 3’s backseats slightly better too. I’m 6’ tall and actually prefer sitting in the bolts rear seats over the 3. But that would only be for 20-30 mins. I would not want to be in the back of either for a long time. My son and I can’t stop laughing about the bolt’s buttons, menus and settings. Did any non-software engineers review these before manufacturing? People say Tesla is a learning curve... yeah it took a few days of driving to learn the menus... the bolt I don’t think we’ll ever fully understand. Way too many options. Way too complicated/confusing. It’s just not clear what you can and can not do and how to do it... and I’m a EE/controls engineer and my son is a budding technophile who has created several simple games for desktop and mobile browsers. For example, we still can’t make it charge exactly when we want it to, but this will be solved after I install the Juice box. Why is the utility hours option only possible with departure time? Another example, the heated steering wheel seems to be on every time we start the car. We can’t figure out how to disable that. Since the car is mostly driven by my mom who is in her 70s, she never remembers to turn it off. In the topic of a senior, one of main reasons we got the bolt over another Tesla was because my mom has trouble getting in and out of the low 3 and she preferred a smaller car than the Y for SF city driving. Another reason was price. We paid about 42k for the 3 (LR RWD) after incentives, before tax. We paid about 21k for a new 2020 Bolt premier also after incentives, before tax and with 0% financing. We did get some unique local incentives, but this is a great deal. But also sad that a car with so much injected in it for it sold that low. It’s evidence of mistakes in execution by GM. I would have cut about 1/4 of the bolt’s features, and put in a better (power) drivers seat and stereo. Probably would be lower cost to make and more compelling.

Went, somewhat reluctantly, for a test drive to help get this particular EV “out of my system”. The pictures had made it look small and so, at 6’3” I had not expected much. Boy was I wrong. This feels spacious inside and it drives like a rocket! All electric sweet! With the current sales prior to the 2022 release year models, this was way more affordable too.

Ok so the 2020 Bolt isn't a Tesla. But it doesn't cost as much as a Tesla by far. For anyone who uses an EV within the city limits with an occasional road trip of < 100 miles, it sure does the job. Quiet, speedy, decent to look at and the hatch back storage is top notch. I stopped oooohing and aaahing about the Tesla when I saw the estimated mileage on a model Y. This is my second Bolt. Best car I've ever owned. Most bang for the buck. Had a BMW i3. Was ok. Had a Porsche Cayman. Fun car but expwn$$$ive to keep. I don't have anything to prove. The Bolt is reliable, inexpensive and utilitarian. Love the car.

2020 Bolt Premier

Just recently bought a new 2020 Bolt with the Premier trim and the upgraded red color. Love the car and am getting quite the range out of a charge. Installed a level 2 home charger and we go all day or several days on a charge. We can achieve a full charge easily in 8-9 hours on a 50amp system. The best thing about this vehicle was the price. Listed at $45K, I got it for less than $32k out the door. Even at the premier trim level it lacks a few items. No adaptive cruise control and no built in garage door opener. The seats are fine but not over comfortable on a longer drive. Handles great with a bit of spunk with its acceleration. Thinking about picking up another one for my wife... great daily driver.

Great first EV

Recently, bought the Bolt and have not been disappointed. The acceleration is great and it handles much better than I expected. Traded in my BMW because it takes premium gas and with the gas prices going up and more taxes added to them. Figured it was time go electric. Could not have made a better choice.
