Nice - but could be nicer
I got this car about 9 months ago. It has the HUD, parking assist, leather seats, adaptive safety systems, and 21" wheels. First, the positives: 1. The technology is great. It has a lot of bells and whistles, and the adaptive safety systems make me feel safe. 2.It has that quintessential BMW performance. When you hit the accelerator, it GOES! The converse is true too; you can drop 5 mph in a couple of seconds just by taking your foot off the gas. 3. It has a big trunk. 4. The exterior is nice. Sexy but classy at the same time. Negatives: 1. ECO mode is useless, for me anyway. It reduces performance by 30%, which is definitely noticeable. But it does not give better gas mileage, at least for in-town driving. Maybe it is more efficient on the highway. I don't know since I haven't taken it on a long trip yet. 2. The interior is mediocre, especially for a car in this price range. That is its biggest detractor. I test drove the Volvo XC 90 and the Genesis GV 80 before settling on the X5. Both the Volvo and the Genesis have much nicer, classier interiors. I think BMW could have done a much better job here. 3. You cannot take this car fast around curves, probably because of the height. That is probably even more so in my case since mine has the 21" wheels rather than the stock 19". If you go any faster than 20 mph at a turn, then everything in the car shifts and you feel like you will lose control. My previous car was a 750 Li in which I could take turns at 45 mph with no issues. Big change there. 4. The back seat is only average, not big. I would have preferred them adding a few extra inches of legroom for the back seat passengers, even if it meant shrinking the trunk size a little bit. All in all, I like it. It rides high (again, probably because of the 21" tires) and responds well to driver signals. Very precise steering and excellent acceleration, as one would expect from a BMW. And the tech is top notch. I just wish they had done a better job of making the interior more elegant.

Smooth, powerful and so posh!
Acceleration is amazing and it is so quiet. By far the best of all the mid size SUVs we test drove and that list is long.

Plug-in hybrid is the way to go
We have an EV and a smooth inline six sports car for our family—and it’s the same vehicle! While I’d love to have the range and the charging speed of the updated 50e, I’m happy to have the pre-facelift model for the physical A/C buttons the more classy interior. This is such a beautiful and wonderful family car, I had no idea how I would enjoy driving an EV. But then, when the engine comes on, just that sound and smoothness between the inline six and the transmission, this car is just an engineering masterpiece! Our 45e makes me either chasing the next EV range record by driving it efficiently or creating that big smile in my face when driving this SUV hard around the corners or just pressing your body in the seat when accelerating. Pure luxury, quietness and a masterpiece of engine sound when you want it, this German car is just wunderbar!

The car is terrific, 30 plus miles per gallon averaged on a 3K trip. Around the house for errands, good bye gas stations! Coming from a ML 550 Mercedes SUV, this car has a lot to live up to and it has not disappointed me. Storage is a little tight but overall I’ll give it 5 stars because it isn’t a perfect world. But the X5 45e is a keeper.
