There’s a Tiger in my Garage (BMW X3 M 40i)
I still get excited to drive this Beautiful Tiger. He’s a Gorgeous animal to look at….Wow….turn it on….crack, pop, back it out of the garage, and it’s purring….just waiting and ready to go….then Wow!…what an amazing experience to drive this beast. I loved it the minute I test drove it, and I still love it exactly the same today. I take it around town mostly….take grandkids places….yes, this old granny loves a great car…short trips…..this car is great…but the ride is not a comfort luxury feel for long trips, but it sure is fun for what I need. So far it’s needed an electronic reset and a new battery. I’m hoping for a few more fun years in this Tiger! UPDATE: I will have it a year this month. I still love it. The service light came in last month. Needed a adjustment in a “flap” and the windshield wipers replaced….still runs great…gas mileage is good…perfect car for me. My hubby loves driving it…

Great engine and exhaust sounds, ride is crap.
I leased this vehicle, the engine is superb the exhaust burps and farts in sport mode, killer sound. The interior and fit and trim are excellent, all-in-all a typical sweet bimmer, except for ride quality, (I've owned 3 M vehicles, (3)X-5Ms all had a stiffer suspension), however this thing even with adjustable suspension will beat you up, it would benefit greatly from air suspension. I'm very disappointed.

That engine though....
Traded in an ‘18 Q5 Prestige for a used ‘19 X3 M40i. The Audi was our first experience with a boosted 4cylinder, and while it had plenty of power, it had some odd lag (either due to turbo or transmission, or maybe both). Worse was the sound. The Q5 overall was a fine car, with new tech and neat dash, but it just didn’t excite. And the more we lived with the “new” one, the more we realized how much we liked our previous 2010 Q5 (but not all the repair costs). Test drove the SQ5, V60, XC90 and others to find something better, but nothing seemed like a great replacement. Started looking at ‘18 and ‘19 executive trim x3 m40is and realized they were now in my price range - 45-50k. And then I drove one. Since my own car is a ‘15 435i, the tech in the x3 was comfortable and updated. But the selling point was the engine and transmission compared to the Q5 (and even the sq5). The power is very linear and always there when you need it. The car was just as quiet and comfortable as the Q5, and in my mind the tech in the x3 was better (not the dash, but the hud and infotainment I’ve better (user preference though). And the car just looks better. Different enough from the last model to be new (unlike the Q5 where our cargo mat from the previous one still fit perfectly). Within a week of my first test drive, I found one with the interior and exterior that my wife likes and made the switch! A few quibbles: there’s an odd, low pitched hum with the ac that changes with engine rpm - seems to be somewhat common and maybe “normal” according to forums. It also seems a bit “floaty”, without a good on-center feel on the highway at speed, but that could be due to the all season tires I bought to replace the run flats that were on it (so I will take the hit for that - but they do increase the overall ride comfort, which to me is at least as good as the Q5, if not better). Last is the downshifting under braking... I noticed this on another new bmw when I took my car in for service, and the same is true on the x3. It makes a nice, smooth linear stop more difficult, but feels great when braking while driving more “spirited”. My car is a manual, so I don’t know how long this downshifting has been present on bmws. There’s also the ASS - but I can’t decide if it is worse or better than the q5’s. I haven’t noticed it too much, so it can’t be awful. Oh yeah, it’s kinda loud for her when it starts up. I have to agree with her on that. In the end, though, the b58 engine sold it for me. My wife is still getting used to the switch (she has been in Audi’s for 15 years now so the technology is an adjustment), but she says she likes the wireless CarPlay a lot. She also likes the interior much better (oyster versus black in Q5). If you can make the jump to this engine, go for it!

Great vehicle better then previous Generation
Waited for BMW to revise previous gen X3. It was worth the wait. They nailed it on design and looks and performance for a SUV with a turbo 4. Gas mileage is great for a vehicle of this nature. Run flats are actually not as bad as people say (at least not on this vehicle). Mine is an X-line S30i (not the AWD version). I drove both and since being in Atlanta don't really need the AWD so saved the money and spent it on options. Only disappointment was that I did not find one with the Harmon Kardon stereo upgrade and yet with all the proper options car was still almost $50k. Kind of think for that money you should get the HK included. Other then that no real issues. Functionality in cockpit is good, visibility is good. Compared it to Q5 and MB GLC-300. All great cars and you should test all 3 as everyone fits in the seats differently. I just felt more comfortable in the X3 and felt it handled better then the MB. Audi with AWD actually handled really well but their 2019 models do not have touch screen interface. I believe their 2020 models will. All 3 vehicles are really nice, not sure either is really that much better then the other really just comes down to form/fit/function while you drive them and sit in them. Don't think you could go wrong with choosing anyone one of them. So I went with the BMW and have no regrets at this point after driving it 6k miles and 9 months . Vehicle is still doing ok after 2 years. Would still recommend it at this point although the Q5 changes for 2021 make it very competitive against the X3 and a must test drive before you make your decision. 2.5 years in to lease and vehicle is still performing as expected. Purchased at lease end due to lack of inventory choices. Still performing as expected however OEM RFT's (bridgestone dueler's) had to be replaced at 23k miles. I rotated them per schedule and monitored pressure consistently. Was hoping to get at least 30k. Oh well they are RFT's. I am lucky not to have to put a lot of miles on per year because at $1,200 a pop for replacement tires, it can get expensive quickly if you are driving 12k to 15k miles per year

Constant Repairs !!!
2019 X3 with 162,000 miles, I have had major repairs done. From Oct of 2022 June 2023 I have spent over $12,000. I do drive a lot, but this seems excessive. I have always kept up on the maintenance and inspections and all work was done at the dealership. However, this is becoming a bit much. Has anyone else experienced this?
