2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen
No longer available new in the USA. Americans don't buy "station wagons", they say. Well, this is one who's happy he did. I WAS looking for a nice clean used compact SUV with AWD. I need enough room for my gear and power going to all 4 for upper Midwestern winters. But compact SUV's are typically not designed with sporty drivers in mind. Then I found this: a very lightly used 2019 … VW Sportwagen S with 4MOTION AWD and a 6-speed manual box. Turned out to be just what I needed. Who knew? Tons of space inside, comfortable and supportive chairs, a slick shifter, and just enough tech. The 1.8 liter turbocharged 4-pot is no rocket, and the gas mileage is just O.K. - mine averages around 26 mpg on regular. BUT THE HANDLING! The previous owner had popped for 18-inch wheels with premium all-seasons, and this thing is so flat through the curves, you will find yourself looking for the Audi badges once you step out. This car is not for you if you crave attention, but sometimes attention is the LAST thing I want. If you need something with enough capacity to haul your stuff, (or space for a substantial Costco run), AWD, a stick shift, and enough grip to have you grinning on a nicely technical stretch of smooth pavement, (or when you slingshot off that on-ramp onto the freeway at really healthy merging speed), scratch that compact SUV off your list and grab you one of these little critters.
