2020 Tesla Model Y
There is so much potential in the Tesla Model Y. It is, in many ways, a game-changer for transportation. Yet, this car is SO BUGGY that its promise is really compromised. Here are the issues I've noticed in less than 8 months of ownership:
1. Misleading Delivery Promises & Poor Experience: When I leased my car, the Tesla employee at their retail location promised me that the car would … be delivered to my home. When the car came in, he said this offer had been changed. I needed to take a $55 Uber ride to collect the car. I stood around waiting to be helped for 45 minutes. When I mentioned the Uber and the wait to Tesla employees they simply shrugged.
2. Service Notification: A day after driving the car off the lot, I received a safety notification that could not be turned off and did not provide any further information about the nature of the problem. It required a service appointment, which I couldn't get for three weeks. At that appointment, the technicians diagnosed the issue as a unseated sensor. The fix required setting a separate appointment three weeks later.
3. Broken driver seat controls: Attempting to share my car with my girlfriend and daughter required them to adjust the seat. Unfortunately the controls stopped working and adjustments weren't possible. Another service appointment weeks into the future.
4. Frequent Bluetooth problems: Unlocking the car via the Tesla iPhone app is a cool idea, but the execution of this is really poor and doesn't work as expected.
5. Windshield Wipers: In the rainy northwest, we depend on windshield wipers to stay safe. The auto mode, unfortunately, is software-driven and not sensor-driven. That means the wipers can run far too hard and fast, or not nearly enough. Both situations require attention that distract me as the driver in conditions that are already challenging.
6. Lack of customer support: Raising these issues with Tesla staff is greeted with a shrug. There is no one to talk to about the problems or the patterns. I find myself exploring my state's lemon laws and posting reviews to warn people off of this promising but deeply flawed vehicle.
