2023 Mazda CX-50
I bought a 2023 CX-50 Turbo as an interim vehicle while waiting for an EV pickup truck. The local Ford dealers checked off the no-go box for the F-150 Lightning by jacking the price, just because they could. Now, I'll wait to see about a Silverado EV in its second model year. In two months I've taken the CX-50 on two long 9-hour road trips, with a fair amount of commuting and running … errands. With 5K miles on the odometer, I think I have a good feel for the pros and cons... First off, I really enjoy the performance of the turbo engine. At full throttle it sounds great and it purrs at 75 mph. In Soul red, the car looks great and it has a nice stance with its 20" wheels (more about that later). Almost everything written about the interior and exterior design is true (very nice). As has been reported by others... the steering feel is extremely subjective. It's more like a sports car and can feel "darty" until you get used to it. I find that it only takes pressure to keep it pointed down the center of the lane. It's almost as though you need to overcome the centripetal force of the wheels to change directions. All in all, I'm getting used to it. On my last long road trip I averaged 30mpg, driving as I normally do (keeping up with the traffic), I put Premium+ gasoline in on the return trip and felt the added power - that seems to come on even smoother. OTOH, I only achieved 28.2 mpg. Relative to comfort - no complaints. I am pleasantly surprised at how good the radio sounds (I typically stream Pandora from my phone), and the cargo room is plenty good for my needs (I still have a Chevy Colorado for hauling larger items). For the cons... I hate the steering wheel, it has a very sharp radius right at the point (no pun intended) my palms rest on the wheel. What's wrong with a nice, meaty, round steering wheel?? I also dislike the lane keep assist as it does little to help keep the car centered and produces an annoying shudder when close to the shoulder lines. Not great. For many, the ride quality is too stiff, and it is for some road surfaces. For me, it's about 70/30 (love/hate). I love the way the car handles, and it's a dream on smooth roads. It really falls on its face on concrete surfaces, and the odd highway that has been paved over a concrete surface - the expansion joints WILL drive you crazy. All in all, I'm glad I bought the car. I got a decent discount and a 2.9% finance rate. I could have paid cash, but why bother with a rate that low? A very good car for car guys and gals. If your tush needs cush, you may need to shop elsewhere. Why have Americans gotten so soft?!!!
