The truck is only a few months old. Recently it started to downshift abruptly on two occasions at the crest of a hill or just on the down hill side. It's at least a two gear shift - RPM's increase significantly. If anything the vehicle should have downshifted up the hill and then upshifted as the vehicle passed over the crest of the hill as it headed back down the down hill side. The … first time it happened I was alarmed and immediately thought the gear shifter had been thrown into neutral. It had not. I looked frantically for any other warning light etc but there were none. I took my foot off the accelerator and hovered it over the brake just in case I had to take evasive action or slow the vehicle down. I had no control over the transmissions actions. After 2 or 3 second delay and high engine revs the transmission corrected itself and selected the appropriate gear for the vehicle's speed and resistance requirements. The uphill speed was approximately 70km/hr or 45 mph on both occasions.
The second incident was similar in the circumstance that it occurred but it was not as intense. And once you experience it you know what it is. That said, this is unacceptable and Toyota must remedy the problem. Reprogramming may be the answer.
