Disappointing as it aged
Bought in 2009. Replaced front and rear brakes Three times and it only has 55k miles on it. Replaced transmission, alternator, gaskets. The thing tirned out to be a disappointment. I loved it for the first few years but repairs have become too frequent and costly. I didnt pay much for it so i guess its true that you get what you pay for. The road noise is loud. Interior is ok and seats are comfortable. i loved the all wheel drive which saved me in the winters but even if Suzuki was still in the US market Iwouldnt buy another one. Its too bad because its the perfect size for city driving and parking. gas mileage was average so no complaints about that really but if you are considering a car for the long term this isnt the one. After 10 years old it really needed to be in the shop more often than I wouldve anticipated. Im just hanging on until I can afford a better vehicle. I felt bad wroting this negative review because I really wanted to meep loving the car. It was cute and other people seemed to have liked riding it.

My newest addition to the fleet
I purchased an SX4 crossover about 5 months ago based on my experiences with my 2000 Esteem. After a lot of research and searching I found an AWD automatic with all the options. What a wonderful little car! It is solid, capable and a great value. In my opinion this is the only car on the market if you need something easy to get into with AWD that is inexpensive and well made. My parents are getting older and they are now considering buying the same car. My mom has back problems and she loved the ride quality and how easily she was able to get into the car. I have a Toyota Sienna and the head and door sill clearance are better on my SX4. Do yourself a favor and test drive one of these. Update #2 I’ve had the car for nearly a year now and it’s been dead solid reliable. I took it on a 1000 mile trip with no issues. Update #3 going on my 2nd year with the car. The only issue I have is some bad oil seals on the valves. In my experience this is due to poor maintenance. When I first saw the car I noticed sludge when I pulled the oil cap. I was hesitant to buy, but the price was right and it was the only one I could find with the options I wanted. The previous owner either didn’t change the oil often enough and/or used poor quality oil. I use full synthetic. Long term use cleans sludge but it also increases oil leaking past worn seals. I’ll have to take a weekend and replace the seals. That should fix the issue. But no other issues to report. Still dead reliable. Update#4 Had to replace the engine about a year ago. I mentioned leaky oil vavle seals previously. Well we had a situation that took all of our attention and resources for about 2 months. Covid for parents and friends. We spent all of ourt time running errands and Dr appointments and I neglected checking the engine oil. It got very low once and a few weeks later the engine went kaput... I sourced a replacement engine but decided to go over the new one before I installed it. Good thing I did. The main bearings were shot. I got a partial refund and rebuilt the motor. Rebuild parts for these are extremly difficult to find. I found the oil pump for these engines is chain driven and not that robust. I would much rather see a gear driven oil pump. I still feel the engine failure was due to poor maintenance by the previous owner, but unfortuately I can no longer recomend this car to anyone. I've seen quite a few SX4's for sale with bad engines. This in combination with my experience leads me to think the oiling systems on these engines is inadequate. If you run full synthetic and keep a watchful eye on the levels you will probably be ok. I've had no more issues with mine and the new engine does not use any oil. But I'm still concerned that the oil pump is just not up to the job.

Best Bang for Buck
Do your research and drive a bunch of cars. I drove the Honda Element, Kia Soul, Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. Hands down this car was the best of all these cars combined. Features wise you cannot get a car with all that Suzuki offers for the price from any other car company. Find an 09 and Suzuki is giving 3k off. Find a dealer with inventory and they are willing to move the price even more. I am 6'3" and 220lbs and I fit no problem. Easy in and out and seats are comfortable. Main reason I bought the car, traded in 2008 Dodge Avenger R/T was the lack of comfort in the Dodge(many other reason, car was a lemon). No other car in the class of small economy will give you the features SX4 does.
Great car
My son bought a used 2008 SX4, I liked it so much I bought the 2009 model. I have bought over 10 new cars in my life, but this car is by far the MOST FUN to drive. I've had it about a year now, and I still look forward to driving it. It's that much fun. Excellent AWD, used it many time in Northeast PA. No worry about shoveling, just put it in AWD and go, let the FWD car people shovel. Plenty power for passing and cruising. Spent many 6 hr drives to Boston and never get tired or uncomfortable driving it. Avg about 30 mpg to and from work, 44 miles both ways, with city and interstate driving. Bought the iPod adapter and also factory fog lights. Very easy to install. BUY ONE!
Sassy and Sensible
This car was purchased primarily for its easy accessible from a wheelchair. The transition from a heavier, more comfortable American SUV was immediately apparent, yet the PURPOSE of the Suzuki was based primarily on value and ease of access, which it offers. Additional advantages immediately presented themselves: excellent gas mileage, (average 35 mpg), easy parking, (!!!), quick response, no maintenance other than regular oil changes using synthetic oil, all wheel drive handles well in rain & snow. Sassy and sensible are a great combination!
