Honest Little Family Car

Jesse Coley, 07/24/2015
2015 Mitsubishi Outlander SE 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl CVT)
*Updated Feb 2024* This continues to be our daily family car. The only major problem it has had was a leaking AC condenser in 2022. An independent mechanic was able to replace the bad part in a few hours and recharge the system. We bought this brand new and besides the AC repair all we've done is basic maintenance, tires, batteries, recalls, etc. It still feels tight and solid, at over … 80k miles now and none of the squeaks and rattles are present that you'd expect in a "budget" car. Seriously, I've gotten in rentals lately that weren't holding up as well as this has! It has always had plenty of room for us, though we aren't overweight or overly large. The CVT has held up well and we've come to appreciate it in city driving, which is where it excels. We have kept up on the fluid changes for it. The 2.4 liter engine feels more powerful than it's ratings would suggest, probably due to excellent programming on the transmission. Mitsubishi engineers have always been so good at the basics! Our fuel mileage has averaged 20-23 city and 26-30 highway, depending on speed and conditions. Only gripes have been the really bad OEM tires and the thin paint that chips and scratches super easily. I used to joke that we got the Copper color so the rust on the chips would blend in, but so far it has refused to rust! An excellent set of tires goes a long way on this, don't skimp out on rubber. Summary: If you need a family car that can do a little bit of everything and take a beating, this is it. If you're reading this today, I'm assuming you are in the used market and I would wager these are good bets for the money, assuming the oil and filters have been changed. This is the car most people would say they really want but they buy something else instead that ends up costing a lot more money. I can't stress enough how much of a disservice the "automotive journalist" set have done to Mitsubishi. The Outlander is a fine product.
