Edmunds' Expert Review

Overall rating

The CLA-Class has accomplished the goal Mercedes-Benz set out to achieve back in 2014 with the car's introduction: Successfully provide new customers with a lower-priced entry point into the Mercedes family and simultaneously free up some space for the C-Class to become more upscale. The CLA's low price will catch a lot of people's attention all by itself, but other aspects of the CLA are appealing, too. Sleek styling, sporty performance, excellent fuel economy, unmatched safety equipment and a surprisingly roomy trunk are also part of the deal.

To keep the good times rolling, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 and AMG CLA 45 represents a midlife freshening for this entry-level luxury sedan. The styling is a bit different, there are some new standard and optional features (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, in particular), and the infotainment interface now boasts a wider but slimmer screen. Good updates all, but we're disappointed that some potential deal-breakers went unaddressed. The CLA still suffers from potentially sluggish engine responsiveness, a harsh ride quality and cramped rear headroom.

If you're shopping the CLA250, you'll want to consider its closest competitor, the Audi A3, which betters the CLA's interior quality and is smoother and more enjoyable to drive everyday. There are also lower trim levels of bigger luxury sedans: specifically, the Audi A4, BMW 320i, Cadillac ATS and Jaguar XE. They won't provide the same number of features at this price range, but interior space and overall refinement will be better. As for the AMG CLA 45, it's a mini Mercedes hot rod, outgunning the Audi S3 and BMW M240i coupe, though those cars are just as fun to drive. Overall, we prefer the A3 to the 2017 Mercedes CLA-Class, but if you like the CLA's look and love the idea of owning a Mercedes-Benz, it's definitely the right choice.

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class includes stability and traction control, antilock brakes, a driver knee airbag, front-seat side thorax airbags, front-seat side pelvic airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and a rearview camera. A forward collision warning system with automatic braking and a drowsy driver warning system are also standard; they are optional or not available on most other luxury cars. Also included is the Mercedes-Benz Mbrace2 emergency communications system that includes automatic collision notification, an emergency call button, remote door unlocking and stolen vehicle recovery.

The optional Driver Assistance package adds a blind-spot monitoring system (available separately) and lane departure warning and intervention. It also raises the speed threshold for the forward collision warning system.

Trim levels & features

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is a five-passenger, four-door compact sedan, though Mercedes markets it as a coupe due to its roof shape. There are two models: the CLA250 and the AMG CLA 45.

Standard equipment on the CLA250 includes 17-inch wheels, a rearview camera, automatic wipers, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats with manual thigh adjustment, memory functions and four-way driver lumbar adjustment, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, MBTex simulated-leather upholstery, 60/40-split folding rear seat, Mbrace2 emergency communications (see Safety section), the Mercedes COMAND tech interface, Bluetooth connectivity, HD radio, a USB port, a media player interface, an auxiliary audio jack and a CD player.

For more equipment, Mercedes offers the optional Premium package with keyless ignition and entry, heated front seats, a blind-spot monitoring system, satellite radio and a premium Harman Kardon sound system. The Interior package adds leather upholstery, stitched MBTex on the dash and doors, and multicolor ambient lighting. There's also the Multimedia package with a navigation system, voice controls and the Smartphone Integration package (available separately, includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto).

You can also get the Convenience package to add a hands-free power trunk and auto-dimming driver-side and interior mirrors. The Driver Assistance package brings adaptive cruise control and a lane departure warning system. The Sport package adds special exterior styling, 18-inch AMG wheels and upgraded brakes. The Sport Package Plus tacks on performance-tuned suspension, steering and exhaust to those upgrades. To the Sport packages, the Night package adds 18-inch black AMG wheels and gloss black exterior trim pieces.

Stand-alone options include a panoramic sunroof, bi-LED headlights, an adjustable suspension with Comfort and Sport settings, an automatic parking system, blind-spot monitoring, a variety of 18-inch wheel designs, the heated front seats and a Garmin Map Pilot navigation system, which is less advanced than the system in the Multimedia package.

The AMG CLA 45 includes a more powerful engine, a different transmission, all-wheel drive, sport tuning of all pertinent mechanical elements (steering, suspension, brakes, etc.), unique styling, the LED headlights, sport seats, and a special upholstery consisting of MBTex simulated leather and Dinamica simulated suede.

With rare exception, all of the CLA250's options listed above are available on the CLA 45. Additional options are available, though. The AMG Dynamic Plus package brings its own adaptive suspension, a limited-slip differential and a special Race mode added to the car's standard adjustable drive settings. The AMG Dinamica Interior package adds simulated-suede trim to the dash and steering wheel rim.

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, but 4Matic all-wheel drive is optional. In Edmunds testing, a CLA250 went from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds — a suitably quick time for an entry-level luxury car. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 29 mpg combined (24 city/36 highway) with front-wheel drive and a couple mpg lower with all-wheel drive. Edmunds averaged 28.4 mpg during our 12-month, 20,000-mile long-term test.

The AMG CLA 45 has a different turbocharged 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that punches well above its weight class with 375 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. A special seven-speed, AMG-tuned transmission and sport-tuned all-wheel drive are standard. Its EPA-estimated fuel economy is surprisingly thrifty at 26 mpg combined (23 city/30 highway), though good luck with that should you use all that power as intended.

Driving

There is no denying that the 2017 CLA250 provides a considerably different driving experience than its rear-wheel-drive brandmates. Different doesn't necessarily mean worse, though: It accelerates briskly and steers with precision. It feels athletic, evoking the feel of a "hot hatch" such as the Volkswagen GTI — albeit a more luxurious one.

There are aspects to the CLA, however, that could be deal-breakers. The dual-clutch automatic transmission is slow to engage when accelerating slowly or in traffic. Gear shifts aren't always smooth, and the throttle is mushy and unresponsive. In general, the lack of refinement is unbecoming for a Mercedes-Benz.

Then there's the ride quality. Though there are three suspension options — standard, sport-tuned and adaptive — we've found that it's actually the tire choice that makes the difference. The standard Comfort suspension has rigid run-flat tires that result in harsh impacts over bumps. The Sport suspension has regular tires, a combination that not only results in a smoother ride but also sharper handling. Moral of the story: Avoid the run-flats.

Meanwhile, the 375-hp AMG CLA 45 promises to keep your heart racing. In addition to its sizzling acceleration, the CLA 45 has plenty of personality. Select Sport mode, and you'll hear crackles and pops from the exhaust during both up- and downshifts. Around turns, the CLA 45 offers tenacious grip and guided-missile determination. But the cost of this handling prowess is an even firmer ride quality that might be too much even for drivers who want an authentic sport sedan experience. Also, the CLA 45's performance-oriented brakes are very sensitive and grab with the slightest touch of the pedal.

Interior

The CLA's cabin dates back stylistically to the last generation of Mercedes cabin design that was less showy than what's currently found in the C-Class and GLC-Class. As the budget Benz, a few cheaper interior plastic bits can be found around the lower dash and center console. Nevertheless, the CLA still looks and feels premium, with a clean design and tight fit and finish. You'll even be hard-pressed to tell that the standard MBTex fake leather isn't the real stuff.

For 2017, the central display screen has a bigger viewing area. It's part of the COMAND electronics/navigation interface, which has been updated with the latest software introduced in those newer Benz models. It does lack their new touchpad controller, but we haven't found that especially useful, so we doubt you'll miss it. The remaining buttons and knob get the job done, but this latest system update does seem to be a bit more confusing than its predecessor.

Although some might struggle initially with the column-mounted electronic shifter, its location creates extra center-console storage, including a bin deep enough for a large water bottle. For bigger items, the notably wide trunklid hides a generous 13.1 cubic feet of space that's considerably more useful than the Audi A3's.

The same cannot be said for passenger space. Though the front seats are impressively comfortable and supportive — especially on longer drives — the rear seat borders on unpleasant. Legroom is actually OK, but headroom is cramped, the view out is claustrophobic, and there isn't a center armrest. It's even ill-suited for children because the backseat's non-removable head restraints make it tricky to fit a forward-facing car seat. The small doors also make it tough to get in.

Lovin my MB 250 CLA
Nancy Fortner,08/24/2017
I find the driver's seat somewhat hard...............suggestion, use leather as opposed to "Leatherette." Other than that, i'm very satisfied so far.........
Attractive Car but with minor flaws
Derek Fan,02/22/2017
Sporty car with good agile handling. The size of this car makes racing a natural. The stiff suspension is based on personal preference. Since it's a sports coupe category it shouldn't be a problem for most.
If you don't know what to d with $20,000 buy a MB.

More about the 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class

Mercedes-Benz first introduced the CLA in 2014 as an entry-level model that would provide a low-priced gateway to the Mercedes brand and allow the C-Class to move further upscale. By and large the CLA has achieved its goals, and 2017 sees a refreshed model with some minor styling updates. Unfortunately, there are a few bugs in the car that haven't been addressed, and we feel they could be deal-breakers for many buyers.

The CLA's cabin represents the previous generation of Mercedes interior design. Though it's not quite as showy as some of Mercedes' latest products, the look and feel are mostly upscale and premium, and even the imitation leather (called MBTex) is hard to tell from the real thing. That said, there are a few cheap-looking trim bits to be found if you look carefully enough.

While the front seats are impressive for their comfort and support, the backseat is a hot mess. Legroom is decent, but the CLA's swooping roofline limits headroom and the small windows make it feel claustrophobic. There's no center armrest and the small door openings make entering and exiting difficult. It's not even well suited for children, as the non-removable headrests get in the way when fitting a forward-facing car seat.

The CLA gets the latest generation of Mercedes' COMAND infotainment system, though it lacks the new touchpad controller. But that's a feature we've never found very useful, and therefore didn't miss very much. For 2017, the screen gets a larger viewing area, and the Smartphone Integration package includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The latest version of the software seems slightly more confusing than its predecessor, however.

All CLAs get a 2.0-liter engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. CLA250 models are rated at 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the AMG CLA 45 squeezes an impressive 375 hp and 350 lb-ft from this small engine. The CLA250 offers front- or all-wheel drive, while the 45 gets AMG-tuned all-wheel drive. The EPA fuel economy for the front-drive CLA250 is 29 mpg combined (24 city/36 highway) with AWD models slightly lower. The AMG CLA 45 is rated at 26 mpg combined (23 city/30 highway), which is impressive for its power output.

Unfortunately, the CLA250's driving experience isn't as good as we would have hoped. The CLA is actually a good handler — it reminds us of hot hatches like the Volkswagen GTI — but ride quality with the standard Comfort suspension is poor, due to the hard-compound run-flat tires. Ironically, the Sport suspension gets regular tires that provide a better ride, but both versions suffer from soggy throttle response and an unrefined transmission. The AMG CLA 45 is a lot of fun, but its sport-tuned suspension is very firm and the brake pedal is grabby.

Both the CLA250 and AMG CLA 45 are offered as single-trim models with a lot of standard equipment and a long options list. Which is best? Let Edmunds help you find the perfect 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class.

Should I lease or buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class?

Is it better to lease or buy a car? Ask most people and they'll probably tell you that car buying is the way to go. And from a financial perspective, it's true, provided you're willing to make higher monthly payments, pay off the loan in full and keep the car for a few years. Leasing, on the other hand, can be a less expensive option on a month-to-month basis. It's also good if you're someone who likes to drive a new car every three years or so.
