Test Driver Ratings & Comments

Acceleration commentsLikes a lot of wheelspin. High-rpm (4,500-5,000) launches produce best times. Reducing rpm at launch consistently slowed times. Shifter is short-throw and positive. Engine is done making power by 6k and only gets rougher higher than that. Not a drag racer, but I wouldn't expect it to be.
Braking commentsStraight, consistent stops that lengthened initially. Best stop was first. Solid, confident pedal. Longer distance than expected for a light car with relatively sticky rubber.
Handling commentsPoor ESC calibration results in poor slalom speed. Turn it off, however, and there's ample speed left. Lots of body roll makes high-speed transitions more exciting than they need to be. Skid pad: Playful, fun with approachable limits. Good balance with a reasonable sense of where grip limits lie. Could (should?) be sharper, however. Easy to balance on throttle and hold the tail at a moderate slip angle. Very good communication, which has always been a Miata strength.
