98 Trooper LTD
Love this vehicle but the big complaint is a problem which no one has been able to solve. The front end power train seems to bind up, especially when backing out of parking spaces when the wheels are turned. Have had it looked at several times. Seems to me it would be the CV joints but I've not gotten any mechanics to concur. Other than that it's been a good vehicle and would buy another.
Bad engine
Loved the Trooper till the engine blew. Crank broke and came out thru the oil pan. Found out the 98 had a defect in the engine and Isuzu replaced some engines early on. But my Trooper is now 6 years old and I am outta luck. Rebuilt or used engines are expensive $3500 to $4000 and $1000 to install. This is a truck worth $6000 at trade if you are lucky.
Great save for the engine trouble
I love the trooper for its size, ruggedness and desire to not conform to current bubble designs. My one very major complaint is a blown engine at 70,000 miles and the cost to replace it. Ouch! I have to believe that I was just unfortunate and this is not the norm!
Oil Burner
We bought our trooper new. Have taken great care of it. It now has 56000 miles and is burning nearly 2.75qt of oil every 3000. Company says anything under 3qt is normal and no covered under warranty. Other than that concern it has been a great vehicle.
A few problems but a geat SUV!!!
We wanted/needed more room for the family and found this wonderful Trooper. It was a lease vehicle and only had 36000 miles. Does great off road and on road. We take it up the mountains often. Some roads aren't that great but the Trooper performs like a dream. Fun to drive. Lots of room for cargo/passengers. We can fit three car seats across the back seat easily. We're looking at buying a third seat. After three months the alternator went out. I replaced it and the battery. Has been fine since. So far it has been easy to work on. Lots of room to work under the hood. Stock Bridgestone tires aren't that great. Already need to be replaced after 38000 miles.
