I loved this SUV
I have owned about 4 suvs and this was by far my very favorite! I am very hard on cars and this one took every thing I had and kept on going! I ran it out of gas,oil and never got a tune up and it still ran like a champ. I am very sad to have to get rid of it but with gas prices out of control I have no choice. I will miss this car!
12 Years and running strong. Till death.
We have had our Trooper since it was new back in 1998. It is a true trooper. People cannot believe it is a 1998. It looks better than some of the newer cars. I take it everywhere. Just recently the Catalytic Converters went out so I replaced them and the next bothersome thing is the timing belts that need to be replaced every 90,000 miles or so but other than that this car has been reliable and very versatile. I would never want another car. We are taking this to the grave with us.
98 Trooper LTD
Love this vehicle but the big complaint is a problem which no one has been able to solve. The front end power train seems to bind up, especially when backing out of parking spaces when the wheels are turned. Have had it looked at several times. Seems to me it would be the CV joints but I've not gotten any mechanics to concur. Other than that it's been a good vehicle and would buy another.
Bad engine
Loved the Trooper till the engine blew. Crank broke and came out thru the oil pan. Found out the 98 had a defect in the engine and Isuzu replaced some engines early on. But my Trooper is now 6 years old and I am outta luck. Rebuilt or used engines are expensive $3500 to $4000 and $1000 to install. This is a truck worth $6000 at trade if you are lucky.
Alas dear Trooper, you will be missed
Sadly, the awesome Isuzu Trooper has been replaced by an inferior rebadged GM effort. I very much doubt that the replacement will provide the rock solid reliability I enjoyed from my Trooper - not a single problem in 70k miles and as solid as the day I bought it. The fit, finish and materials were in a class above anything else under $33K, the power train was smooth and perfectly geared to the power output of the 3.5 that debuted in '98. I only had two gripes about the vehicle; I thought the seat fabric could have been a bit thicker and the AC struggled to keep pace with an Arizona summer, though the addition of dark tints helped a lot.
