The 2026 Honda Civic does just about everything very well. It's comfortable, roomy and impressively fuel-efficient when you get the available hybrid powertrain. It also comes in a variety of versions that range from the inexpensive LX to the high-performance Type R. The Civic does cost more than most of its rivals, but we think it's worth it.
Pros
- Pro:Sharp handling makes for fun driving
- Pro:Available hybrid powertrain for high mpg

2026 Honda Civic Review
Overview
The Honda Civic is one of the automaker's most impressive vehicles, offering a wonderful combination of practicality, performance and value. Honda refreshed the Civic last year, adding an impressive hybrid powertrain and updating its exterior styling. As such, we don't expect major changes for 2026. But as it stands, the Civic is one of the best small sedans (or hatchbacks) on the market today.
Edmunds spotlight: An excellent hybrid powertrain
The Civic's hybrid powertrain churns out 200 horsepower — matching the sporty Civic Si — and bests it when it comes to low-end torque. The hybrid doesn't come with all the performance goodies you'll get on an Si, but it does boast an awesome 49 mpg in the EPA's combined cycle. The potent yet efficient powertrain offers a hard-to-beat blend of performance and practicality.
Competitors to consider
The Toyota Corolla is the Civic's top competitor, and Toyota took great strides to make sure this generation of the popular compact was more competitive than its predecessors. But the Corolla feels old (it was last redesigned in 2020), and its hybrid variant doesn't hold a candle to the Civic hybrid. Not only is the Toyota less efficient, it's also significantly less powerful. Other solid picks include the Hyundai Elantra, which comes standard with a ton of advanced driver aids and also offers a hybrid powertrain, and the Mazda 3, which is plenty sporty in its own right.
What’s it like to live with?
Our test team lived with a Civic Si for a year to find out what it's like to live with the medium-spicy version of the latest Civic generation. It was a 2022 model, but most of our observations are still applicable despite last year's updates. Read our Civic Si One-Year Road Test for more.
Which Civic does Edmunds recommend?
Honda hasn't released official information on the 2026 Civic as of this writing. We'll update our recommendation if anything changes, but based on last year's Civic, we would recommend the Sport Hybrid. It produces more power than the base engine and gets nearly 50 mpg, a best-of-both-worlds combination if there ever was one. Being iffy about the price is understandable, but you're getting a lot of well-rounded excellence for the money.

50 years on another Civic

2025 Honda Civic Sport Touring Hybrid 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid EVT)
My Civic history goes back 50 years to a new 1976 Hatch CVCC, I also had an '80 and '83 of that generation. New baby, low income at the time, long commute, dependable were key considerations. 40 years go by and I got the next Honda - a 2024 ST Hatch last January after "growing up" and selling my Golf "R".
I was disappointed with the driving dynamic and CVT after the Golf R manual. I … tested the ST hybrid in November and was amazed by the difference that 20 hp and 50 lb-ft of torque and the difference in "transmission" with the electric motor makes. Amazing! Otherwise its the same great CIvic.
Nits are the passenger seat position, stock tires, absence of homelink and SXM. I've adapted and accepted the later two. I'll upgrade the tires after I get a year or so out of them. That will improve handling further and maybe the road noise. Passengers will not notice the seating. I'll get a little towel for lumbar support.
I paid sticker for the 2024 ST Hatch - $32,500. I was able to work a negotiated $3,000 off sticker for the hybrid in mid December - at $31,045 this is a steal.

2025 Honda Civic Sport Touring Hybrid 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid EVT)
I absolutely love this car. I’ve been driving the Honda Civic hatchback EX for the last eight years and decided it was time to buy new. The new Honda Civic hybrid sport touring was way beyond my expectations. I can see why it won best of the best for 2025. The car starts off like you’re speeding across a cloud then when you hit the gas cruises up to your desire speed effortlessly. The … electronics are amazing and the music system in the touring is wonderful. I’m looking forward to at least another eight years of happy driving in my Honda Civic
Collision Mitigation Braking nightmare

2025 Honda Civic Sport Hybrid 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid EVT)
I have only had my '25 Civic Sport Hybrid car a few weeks, but I am frustrated and would love to get rid of it.
I did a recent highway drive and for 3h it was on cruise control, 3x during that time the car interpreted a passing vehicle was in my lane and started the Collision Mitigation Braking protocol.
So I am cursing at highway speeds and suddenly the car jams on its brakes - … fortunately no one was behind and I wasn't rear ended, but how many more times will I get luck with this?
I took it in to the dealer to have the sensors adjusted, and the mechanics told me to get used to this. Their cars do the same thing!!!
Enjoy, it is unsafe and we don't care!!!
I cannot wait to find out what other features on this brand new car they did not bother to work out before bringing the car to market.
I could never recommend a Honda.
