For more than 55 years, the Mustang has built a reputation for stirring performance at prices that the average shopper could afford. Sure, there have been countless improvements along the way, but the tried-and-true formula of two doors, lots of power and rear-wheel drive remains. This doesn't include the curiously named Mustang Mach-E, which is a completely different all-electric, four-door quasi sedan/SUV.

There are a few changes for the 2021 Ford Mustang. The Bullitt edition is gone, but in return Ford has brought back another historically inspired version: the Mach 1. This revived Mach 1 is the most well-rounded and capable yet and fills in the gap between the GT and the monstrous GT500. It comes standard with many of the performance features that are optional on the GT plus specifically tuned MagneRide adaptive shock absorbers and an available Mach 1-specific Handling package for even greater capability. The Mach 1 also gets a 20-horsepower bump over the standard GT (up to 480 hp from 460 hp) and can be had with the six-speed manual from the GT350 or a quick shifting 10-speed automatic. This Mach 1 is definitely more than just a nostalgic sticker pack.

The Mustang convertible is a thoroughly capable machine, able to deliver high levels of performance and comfort in equal measure. The GT's 5.0-liter V8 offers an unyielding amount of power should you ask for it, yet it's sedate while driving around town. Make sure to opt for the Performance package if you want a pony car that drives as good as it looks.
The Mustang GT's 460-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 provides more than enough thrust to get in trouble. The 0-60 mph sprint comes in 4.6 seconds, just half a second slower than the 707-hp Dodge Challenger Hellcat. Our test car was equipped with sloppy handling all-season tires, but the optional Performance package bolsters the Mustang with increased grip and more stable handling.

Tapping into that power can prove a bit frustrating since the 10-speed automatic transmission shifts into high gears too quickly (it upshifts to ninth at 40 mph!), and it's slow to downshift. Driving in Sport mode is more natural.
This drop-top pony car shakes a bit over bumps, but the ride isn't brittle. Rather, it is cushiony without feeling floaty like the Challenger. The Performance package mildly increases ride harshness. The seats are plush and have tilt-adjustable headrests, but we'd like to see four-way lumbar adjustment. The optional ventilated seats effectively cool the leather on days you leave the top down.

The available performance exhaust opens up the Mustang's otherwise too-quiet taps at low speeds, but it gets loud with any level of acceleration and can get grating after a while. At highway speeds, wind, engine and road noise is omnipresent but not overwhelming, and the exhaust note finally settles.
The Mustang's cabin is spacious for two, with plenty of shoulder room, head- and legroom and a wide center console armrest. The rear seat is tight, and most will use it as a shelf for storage. Still, a family of four could fit — provided they don't need a ton of legroom — and a lowered convertible top helps with getting in and out.

Once inside, drivers will find logically laid-out controls and the intuitive Sync 3 infotainment system. While it offers a good range of adjustment, the front seat doesn't properly envelop the driver. It gives the sensation of sitting on the seat rather than in it. The thick front and rear pillars moderately hamper outward visibility.
The intuitive Sync 3 infotainment system controls a nine-speaker audio system that delivers clear audio and good bass response. But it doesn't get loud enough for us. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is included on both Premium trims. Sync's voice control system features some limited natural speech detection.

The Mustang's advanced driver safety aids performed well in our testing, but adaptive cruise can't be activated until about 20 mph and turns off below 10 mph.
Because the top doesn't fold into the trunk like in luxury convertibles, the Mustang convertible's cargo area is only marginally smaller than the coupe's (11.4 cubic feet versus 13.5 cubes). Still, there's more room here than in the Camaro drop-top (7.3 cubic feet). The trunk opening shape and downward sloping trunk roof make it tough to load large items, but you can still fit a large suitcase in the trunk. You can also use the back seat for ad hoc storage.

Cubbies and pockets inside the cabin are small but plentiful. There's not a ton of room in the back for car seats, but the car seat anchors are easy to access. Lowering the top naturally makes it much easier to install a car seat.
The Mustang GT convertible gets an EPA-estimated 18 mpg combined. The V8-powered Camaro, in contrast, is a little more efficient, by an additional 1-3 mpg all around. Our test Mustang averaged 23.5 mpg on our mixed-driving evaluation route, which indicates that you should be able to get the EPA numbers fairly easily — assuming, of course, you've got a light foot.
You'll find some hard-plastic panels inside, but in general the Mustang's interior is nicely trimmed. Our test car had soft-touch material on the dash and faux leather on the doors, plus soft leather for the front seats. (The rear seats had simulated leather.) Our test vehicle exhibited no squeaks or rattles, which can be tricky for a convertible. Overall value is average. A loaded-up Mustang costs a lot of money, but a similarly equipped Camaro costs more.
Like other muscle cars, the Mustang GT convertible is a lot of fun to drive and exudes attitude. In its standard form, the convertible doesn't have the sharp handling of the coupe — it's more of a laid-back cruiser with gobs of power and a cushy ride. It's the kind of car you'd be happy to commute in every day or take out for a Sunday cruise.

To improve the car's handling, make sure to get the optional Performance package. It's expensive, but the extra bracing and retuned suspension help reduce body roll and control cowl shake. The wider summer performance tires also give you more control. Best of all, ride comfort is almost totally unaffected.

Which Mustang does Edmunds recommend?

For the authentic muscle car experience, we recommend the GT trim that comes with a burly V8 engine. We also suggest sticking with the manual transmission for the full effect, even though the Mustang is marginally quicker and more efficient with the automatic.

Ford Mustang models

The 2021 Ford Mustang is available in five main trim levels: EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium and Mach 1. The standard body style is a two-door coupe. A folding fabric-top convertible version is also offered in all but the Mach 1 trim. Convertibles add more security features and active noise cancellation, but the rear seatbacks are not foldable. There's also the Shelby GT500 that's such a giant leap forward in performance that we cover it in a separate review.

EcoBoost
The entry-level Mustang EcoBoost is powered by a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (310 horsepower, 350 lb-ft of torque). A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a 10-speed automatic is available as an option. Feature highlights include:

  • 17-inch wheels
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Limited-slip rear differential
  • Line lock (locks the front wheel brakes to allow for drag-strip burnouts)
  • Keyless entry and ignition
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Remote monitoring and control through a smartphone app

  • Six-speaker audio system
  • Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of advanced safety features:

    GT Premium 2dr Convertible (5.0L 8cyl 6M)
    I shopped competitive convertibles: Jag FType, Audi S5, BMW M4. They are really nice cars with alot of character and potentially some challenging maintenance issues. The Mustang in my opinion is the best value by far. Gobs of power, great looks, excellent build quality and not overwhleming in the techy world of a BMW or a Audi. The Jag might have a better looking interior- but it also does not have a trunk, nor does the BMW. Key feature of the Mustang is the desing of the roof and the fact that I can fit 2 sets of golf bags in trunk with roof down. Not giant staff bags, but 2 sets of carry stand bags leaving the drivers in the bag! It is perfect.

    CARLOS LAGO: Oh my god! [MUSIC PLAYING] SPEAKER 1: 3, 2, 1, go! CARLOS LAGO: So what we have here are two wildly different Mustangs. This is the Ford Mustang Mach 1. It's got 480 horsepower from its naturally aspirated V8, 10-speed automatic, and a bunch of handling goodies that don't really matter in a drag race, do they? KURT NIEBUHR: No, but I'm in a 2020 Shelby GT500 with a 5.2-liter V8, with a giant supercharger bolted on top of it. And I'm making 760 horsepower. And also, I have a bunch of handling and track goodies on it that won't help. CARLOS LAGO: Aside from your higher displacement, you also have an incredible amount of power. But previous have-- drag races have made us ask if it's too much of a good thing, right? KURT NIEBUHR: Well, if you're on a regular road surface, yeah, I think it could be too much of a good thing. CARLOS LAGO: So what we're going to find out in this drag race is whether 480 horsepower is actually better for a quarter mile acceleration, if that makes sense. Does it? KURT NIEBUHR: Man, I hope not. CARLOS LAGO: It would certainly make the price difference between these two harder to swallow, wouldn't it? Well, if you're on a prep surface, they have a drag strip mode. You've got launch control, it's pretty effective. We're not on a prep surface, so I'm going to be trying to pedal the car myself, maybe use some of the car's built-in traction control, maybe not. I should really try and heat the tires up a little bit first. We actually both have the same tires. We have Michelin Sport Cup 2s. This car, we replaced the Pilot Sport 4 Ss that it came on it. These have seen some actual racetrack work, so they're not at their best. But I am, so let's see. CARLOS LAGO: The Mustang Mach 1 is not a vehicle built for quarter mile acceleration. But it's a Mustang, so it kind of has to be anyway, right? 10-speed automatic is going to make the shifting process a lot easier. And hopefully, we'll be able to keep up with that GT500. As for launching it, I'm going to put it in its drag race mode and just try to roll on the gas pedal while holding the brake in place, to just try to make that launch as aggressive as possible. My real hope is that he just can't get the launch right in the GT500, because that's really going to be the only thing that makes the drag race work in the Mach 1's favor. [MUSIC PLAYING] SPEAKER 1: Drivers, are you ready? Drivers, race in 3, 2, 1, go! CARLOS LAGO: Oh boy, oh boy. KURT NIEBUHR: There you go, get some traction. CARLOS LAGO: OK. Woo! Woo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo! Woo! [MUSIC PLAYING] KURT NIEBUHR: Predictable race was predictable, and predictable lack of traction was also predictable. CARLOS LAGO: So I don't know about you, but I had quite a bit of wheel spin through second and what felt like third gear. I almost felt like I had a Cars & Coffee moment. (SLOW-MO) Oh boy, oh boy. Oh boy. KURT NIEBUHR: Well, luckily for everybody involved, there was not a sidewalk full of people. CARLOS LAGO: So I rolled on the throttle. And what was funny is, we were pretty much side by side until this thing got to like, third gear. And the more this car started spinning its tires, obviously, the more you started pulling away. What's interesting, though, is with this less power, I'm still spinning. KURT NIEBUHR: It's weird. Mustangs, for a long time, haven't been able to hook on the street. And I guess they still can't. CARLOS LAGO: But that was supposed to be a solid rear axle issue, not a multi-link issue. KURT NIEBUHR: I-- you know, to be honest, I didn't really exercise as much patience or self-control as I probably should have, and just wanted to-- I just wanted to win. [MUSIC PLAYING] CARLOS LAGO: OK, now-- hopefully, we've got some heat in the tires. And we're-- I noticed that this time, we're spaced a little further apart. KURT NIEBUHR: I just want to make sure we both have enough room to walk a little bit. SPEAKER 2: [INAUDIBLE] set. SPEAKER 1: 3, 2, 1, go! [MUSIC PLAYING] CARLOS LAGO: There it is. There-- oh, there's the horsepower. Well, shoot. KURT NIEBUHR: Yep. I believe I ordered the wheelspin at 85 miles an hour. How about you? CARLOS LAGO: I actually stayed hooked that time. And I was feeling really good about that until you just disappeared. [MUSIC PLAYING] Well, shoot. KURT NIEBUHR: That was right about the time when the wheels stopped spinning. CARLOS LAGO: So far, we've proven two things, I think. The first is that 760 horsepower is more than 480 horsepower. Would you agree? KURT NIEBUHR: I went to art school. But I'll agree with those numbers, sure. CARLOS LAGO: The second thing I think we've found is that it's very difficult for a car to accelerate forward when its tires cannot get traction to the surface. KURT NIEBUHR: Yeah, especially when the surface isn't exactly your friend. It's pretty baked out here. CARLOS LAGO: I think at Edmunds, we like to take vehicle testing very seriously. That's what really shows in this process. KURT NIEBUHR: Yeah, I forgot to put my serious hat on today, sorry. CARLOS LAGO: What is interesting about this is both of these vehicles take some skill to launch. You know, to be blunt about it, they take some work to launch. It's not as easy as most of the other vehicles we drag race. Now, that's kind of fun. But it also means that like, you really need to practice it and make it work in order to do it safely, and with any sort of quickness. KURT NIEBUHR: Yeah, and I think it also shows, though, that these cars really do their best work once they're on the move. Once you're on a racetrack like this, this car rips, absolutely rips. It doesn't necessarily rip from a standstill, but it's still a lot of fun. CARLOS LAGO: And on that notion, I think we definitely need to do a roll race. That GT500 is definitely going to win, but I just got to see it happen from the perspective of this Mach 1. You know, it's just-- how can you not, right? KURT NIEBUHR: Yeah, I mean, we do, like you said, take testing very seriously. So we do have to make sure that this will win. CARLOS LAGO: There is no conclusion too obvious for us to not validate, or something. [MUSIC PLAYING] SPEAKER 1: All right, guys, go for it. KURT NIEBUHR: We're going to go from 40 miles an hour, I assume? I'm just going to follow Carlos because, you know-- [MUSIC PLAYING] CARLOS LAGO: Yep, yep, yep, yep. Oh my god! Oh my god! KURT NIEBUHR: Oh, hell yes. That never gets old. Never, ever, ever gets old. CARLOS LAGO: That thing is so fast! KURT NIEBUHR: I want one of these, and I want a private racetrack, and I want unlimited tires-- all I want. CARLOS LAGO: And a gas station that you just own, right? KURT NIEBUHR: Yeah, so I'm going to build my private racetrack in Saudi Arabia. CARLOS LAGO: You know, it's funny, this has 10 gears. That has six, seven? KURT NIEBUHR: Yeah, I have fewer gears, but they're spaced quite far apart. But that's OK because I've got the torque to pull them. CARLOS LAGO: Yeah, and I was actually going to say, I think I went through three gear changes while you were in one, just judging by the sound of your engine. Like, I would upshift, upshift, upshift, and you're just this "blat" of exhaust. It's really funny. KURT NIEBUHR: I spun basically through second. And I just kind of short shifted after a while because I was like, you know, I've kind of had enough of wheelspin at 65 miles an hour. I kind of want some grip. CARLOS LAGO: Given the horsepower disparity, we shouldn't have been too surprised with the difference in acceleration. Just see the test track results, where the GT500 is over a second faster to the quarter mile. But let us also use this time to recognize the Mach 1's strengths in handling and stopping. Its best 94-foot stop from 60 and 1.1 average lateral g-- these are incredible results. But fun drag race, yeah? KURT NIEBUHR: Yeah, every drag race is a fun drag race. CARLOS LAGO: And to back up our original thesis, we thought, is 760 horsepower too much of a good thing? The answer is plainly no. KURT NIEBUHR: Yeah, I can say unequivocally, I could use a little more horsepower. CARLOS LAGO: 761, or 860? KURT NIEBUHR: Well, considering this car beat a Charger-- no, sorry, Challenger Hellcat Redeye that had 800 horsepower, I say going to 800 is a little too much. CARLOS LAGO: Yeah, better to keep things sensible at 790 horsepower. KURT NIEBUHR: There's no need to rub it in. CARLOS LAGO: Thank you guys for watching another drag race video.     What is the Mustang Mach 1?

    The Mach 1 is back. After ending its previous run in 2004, Ford welcomes the storied nameplate once again to the Mustang family. The newest Mach 1 is equipped with a brand-new front end, wings and spoilers from the mighty Shelby GT500, and flashy black stripes with contrasting colors to make your Mustang pop.

    This is performance by way of aero and airflow. Equipped with the optional handling package, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 can deliver up to 150% more downforce than the Mustang GT with a Performance Pack Level 1. That's because the handling package adds a front splitter, plus the spoiler and lower diffuser from the Shelby GT500. Whether or not you spec the handling package, the Mach 1 comes standard with a rear-axle cooling system — also from the GT500 — along with new intakes to chill the engine oil and transmission oil. Stiffer components and steering improvements combine with Ford's impressive MagneRide suspension and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires for even greater performance.

    What's under the Mustang Mach 1's hood?

    Previous Mach 1s were just as famous for what was on the hood as under it. For decades, the Mach 1 was visually distinguished from lesser Mustangs with the inclusion of a Shaker hood, an elevated air intake that pokes through the top of the hood. But there will be no Shaker hood on the 2021 Mach 1 — the company decided it didn't provide a performance or acoustic benefit. But the Mach 1 indisputably became synonymous with the style, and losing it for 2021 will be a blow to some fans.

    The Mach 1 uses the same 5.0-liter V8 as the Mustang GT, but with a little extra oomph. Output stands at 480 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque — an increase of 20 horsepower versus the GT and the same output as last year's Mustang Bullitt. Buyers can pair the engine to a six-speed manual transmission (a Tremec unit borrowed from the Shelby GT350 parts bin) with rev matching, or a 10-speed automatic with an upgraded torque converter. Selecting the manual trans also opens the door to the handling package, which is not available with the auto. The Mach 1 also boasts a new 4.5-inch exhaust tailpipe that Ford says lends it a distinctive tone.

    How's the Mach 1's interior?

    The Mach 1 gets a few special interior features, such as new doorsill plates and a badge on the dash inscribed with the car's chassis number. There are also unique Mach 1 welcome graphics on the 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. Ooh. Ahh. Choosing the leather interior adds black-colored seats with an accent stripe, and a classic white cue-ball shift knob is available with the manual transmission.

    How's the Mach 1's tech?

    The Mach 1 might be retro, but its tech offerings are anything but. Every Mach 1 comes standard with the Sync 3 infotainment system, which is optional on lesser Mustangs. We've rated Sync 3 highly in recent years for its ease of use and excellent voice controls. As you'd expect of a fully featured modern vehicle, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility is included.

    Like all 2021 Mustangs, the Mach 1 also comes standard with Ford's suite of advanced driver assist features called Co-Pilot360. It includes automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot warning with cross-traffic alert, lane keeping assist, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

That said, we're eager to get this latest Mach 1 onto the track, especially with the handling package and its high-downforce capabilities.
