After 5 years I still regret buying this thing.

Problem #1 HHR would show the no seat belt light for passenger when no one was sitting there. Dealer claimed cell phones caused it to malfunction Problem #2 The car would like autobrake rapidly causing the car to slowdown, and shake. It was very scary when it happened. The "ESC" or something was cutting on. Would have to pull over and restart the car. Dealer claimed they never heard of the problem but I found on line forums where others had this issue. Problem #3 Recall, after recall, after recall Problem #4 The door handle is made of cheap plastic and broke. Dealer wanted like $400 to fix it. Found a replacement on Amazon for $50 and put it in my self Problem #5 Rotor and brakes when out. I think Problem #2 cause this. Cost me $530 to fix. Other issues.

I don't know why this trim level wasn't included in the menu, but that's what I have. Has all the whistles and bells. Bought a few months used with 13k on the odometer. Handles and brakes great. Very comfortable interior, mostly well designed. Fun to drive! Either you like the look of the retro exterior or you don't. I do.

Car was designed to fail after warranty runs out.

I will state the car never stranded me but once save the recalled ignition seizing up. ALL recalls effected my vehicle, the ignition one was amazing on how long it took the dealership to replace, I kept getting notices in the mail and each time I called they either were not approved to do the recall, out of parts or some other reason why they couldn't get it in. It finally took me saying its going to get dropped off tonight whether your ready or not! Because my cars ignition will not turn. Remind you this is 6 months after I initially called and each time was told they would call me when they can get it in. Now going into that you would think they would have offered a rental....no. They had it for a week while I drove a family members car, after a week I finally had enough called back and they said they still cant get the part in...I demanded a rental...they said ok with some hesitation. 2 minutes later they call back and miraculously they found the part and I could pick it up in 30 mins. Fast forward 3 months...now my power steering intermittently starts cutting out. I search online and see there is recall for that...not wanting to go through the same deal I just went through I just dealt with it. Fast forward again, I see another recall for the air bag, this was an issue I brought up during the warranty that the light would intermittently turn on that it needs service...they looked at it twice...no shipshape. There was another issue with the door that kept it from closing some plastic pc that they charged me 350.00 after the warranty was up. It broke yet again so I took it to a mom and pop garage... 18 bucks to replace....so much for good service. Car only has 94,000 miles on it I change the oil often and run mobile 1 synthetic. And I have 2 rear doors which I barely ever used that no children were getting in and out of slamming it but they wont stay shut unless I rig them to stay closed. This week my car randomly acts like its stuck in 3rd gear and will not take off from a stop occasionally, even stalling once, once up to 35mph or higher it acted fine. Check engine light also illuminated he next day so I RELUCTANLY schedule them to take a look at it and see whats wrong with the trany and fix the recalls...thank god I made the powertrain warranty of 100k only being at 94k Wrong because the previous owner bought the car in 2009 the 5 year is up, I bought in Nov 2010 btw. with 20k miles., that the powertrain would not cover it...so I say fine whats wrong with it? Well they cant tell without dropping the tranny, that's out of the question, they charged me 350.00 to replace pc of plastic I can only imagine what that would run me just to check the problem. Long story short I have a car that I owe money on still that may very well be shot, that I cant afford to fix. Not to mention they may try to charge me 98.00 to run a diagnostic...good luck with that btw. My only hope is I can role the negative equity with a trade to the Ford dealer across the street with nothing down, because I for damn sure will not deal with this Chevy dealer again. Or likey any other Chevy dealer for that matter.

2010 Turbo Problems

Nick, 08/15/2010
2010 Chevrolet HHR SS 4dr Wagon (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 5M)

I have had 5 HHR's since 2006 (love the car), two turbos out of the 5. Never had a problem with any (not even a water leak or radio problem)except for this 2010. A piece of tubing connected to the turbo holds 20 pounds of pressure and was made out of plastic that failed. The Chevy dealer cannot find the part nationwide even with GM help. My question is what about contacting the assembly plant for a part or have one fabricated? Dealer stated GM will not let them fabricate a part, so I have been without my 600 mile 2010 car for over a week. The only thing Ford, GM or others understand is a lawyer. Did get a loaner car after 5 days with GM help.

I bought my 2010 HHR, because, my Mom has a 2006 HHR. She loves her car. She said IF she ever trades, it will be for a new HHR. And I am enjoying my new HHR as much as she enjoys hers.

Great car and a true SS. 260 HP and very good handling car other than a little squirrely with the posi. Have had no negative issues. Pleased with the style and will probably keep at least 2 more years. Not pleased with resale value.

Efficient, practical, decently comfy, CHEAP build

A great crossover/wagon econocar daily driver, fairly comfortable, decent on most roads except hard-scrabble dirt--VERY JITTERY. City driving is pretty poor for this class, 18 to 23 MPG depending how short your drive is and how hard you drive. Come on GM, you chintzed out on a car that should be getting 28 MPG City and 40 highway. Of course, soulless profiteering corporations only put R&D and tech into profitable vehicles like trucks and SUVs. 2.2 L engine isn't horrible, but if you want to jump with any speed off a dead stop and attain any acceleration before 45mph, you have to start in "2" position with the automatic. Keep it there until about 55 or 60 on the highway, it shifts into third smoothly at about 45, then shift up to "D" to get into 4th. It doesn't affect MPG that much, in fact 3rd gear MPG is equivalent to 4th from 40-55 mph. Carries a big load of stuff. I even squeezed in two armchair recliners + ctr console! But the parts like front end suspension, wheel bearings and even the plastic driver side door handle (all broken before 60k miles) will nickel and dime you and then $100 & $100s you to death. Chevy and GM overall FAIL to meet Honda and Toyota BASIC standards with everything they make. Where a Chevy, GMC or even a Buick or Cadillac *might* last 100-150k miles before major repairs, a well maintained Honda or Toyota will go 250k-350k. "Endless money pit" as internet repair guru Scotty Kilmer would say. Ditch it at about 75k miles and you'll be fine.

As far as maintenance goes, it's hardly cost me anything to keep that car in shape. Gas mileage was great. I got 32 miles of a gallon in the city and out on the highway anywhere between 38 and 42 miles to the gallon.

This car is a real drivers car. A really smooth turbo makes it peppy and responsive. Brembo brakes keep things under control. Folding down the rear seats makes it easy to throw a bike or snow boards in the back. Front wheel drive does great on the snow. Great purchase.

Best car I’ve owned!

I recently sold my 2009 Nissan Altima 4D sedan with a 2.5L. It was a beast on the highway, but the shocks started to go and things started to fall apart, so I decided to sell it. In 2019 I got 2,400 for the car. I had it for 10 years and it had 140,000 miles On it. I needed to find a car that was easy on gas, a good reliable car, and a car that would outlast my Nissan. My husband and I found a 2010 Chevy hhr, and the moment I stepped Inside I fell in love. The all plastic dash and interior (other than the seats) is easy to clean and maintain. I looked at the mileage and almost fell out. 65,000 miles on it. It is practically brand new!!!!! They wanted $2,200. I was on cloud nine. The only thing that needs to be replaced are the rotors. (I heard is a common problem.) now, my husband and I have two. He has one (2009) and I have one. (2010) I’m very happy with my purchase!!!
