i think all porsche owners have strong views of the individual series that were produced under the 911 banner (997, 996, 992, 964, etc). there are some specific issues with the 996 series that includes 2001 911's that potential owners should be aware of. good starting point is to order up the back issue of Excellence Magazine (issue #176) for Sept.2009 (i think you can order it online). they did a ... So... my local Porsche dealer has a 2001 coupe... Pretty much a base 911... 75K miles.. Asking $27K... Is that an inherently scary model? Would you just stay away from something like that, period?
Well, you certainly have worked yourself up to a frothy lather over the GT-R based upon the "many reviews" you have been reading. My guess is that you are somewhere between old enough to drive, but not old enough to afford a 350Z, let alone a GT-R and will have to continue to get your "fix" reading reviews rather than driving any of these cars. Nothing wrong with that, by the ... Read More
The performance on paper looks impressive, but the car iself looks butt ugly. And it's probably the 1 in 100 (not me) buyers of a 911 Turbo that can effectively use the extra power over a 911S. Whether you like the German styling of the 911 or the Italian styling of the F430, it appears that you would need to be nearly blind to think this Mattel Toy "transformerd" version of ... Read More

BH, In case you are still looking... Each 911 generation has its own personality and all provide a great driving experience. The 996 although a “water cooler”, is more comfortable and slightly bigger than the preceding generation. I would stay away from 99-2001 MY, Porsche had some difficulties with rear main seal leaks, an expensive repair if out of warranty! For 2002 and up the 996 was revised with a new ... Read More
Porsche displaced Lexus as #1 in JD Powers IQS surveys over the past 2 years. That said, Lexus deserves credit for having generally great product quality and customer service. Unfortunately, the only Lexus we have considered recently, the GX470 in 2005, had significant drivetrain vibration issues that Lexus was painfully slow in addressing. Not sure if it's fixed even now. I have 14,400 miles on a 2005 911S Cabriolet and haven't ... Read More
What "problems" with 18" wheels are you referring to? Again, I don't spend a lot of time on the Rennlist or other Porsche forums, but the previous generation 911's came standard with 18" wheels for at least a decade. I can believe that 19" wheels on a 996 equiped with a "sport" suspension would be jarring, as my friend's former 2001 Turbo proved to be. But the car didn't rattle or ... Read More
"According to my dealer, the slowdown that he has seen from the "wealth effect" you refer to has actually impacted the Boxster and Cayman more than the 911." I've known my Porsche salesman for more than 30 years and he tells me the same story. His allotment of turbos and GT3s is just about gone, has a decent, but not overhwleming selections of 911, 2 Base Boxsters, etc. All '07s. He ... Read More
I'm contemplating buying a 2001+ Porsche 911 Turbo but I need to get some idea of what the likely maintenance costs will be. How much are brake pads and rotors? How much will a new clutch set me back? Are there any things that typically go wrong with these cars? Should I really buy the extended warranty? Even 0-60 in under 4 seconds isn't worth a divorce! Thanks for any helpful ... Read More
1. My frined who traded in his leased 2001 Turbo on a 2006 C2S said it was resold by the dealer for $73k+/- with a 4 year/100k total CPO Warranty. It had 11,000 miles, with factory and certified upgrades that took it to 520hp/520 ft-lbs. The CPO warrantly would be worth a lot to me. What can/will the selling dealer provide? 2. hi, i am still in the hunt for my dream car. i was thinking of stepping up into a 2001 911 Turbo with very low miles. questions 1. its a non porsche dealer. i'm hoping someone might be able to help me out. i was sold a 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo with 5K miles as a CPO car in Jan 2006. the car has had several mechanical issues that date back to the purchase date, including a shimmy in the rear, malfunction gauges, and alignment issues. these were essentially disregarded on repeat service calls (blame was placed on tire PSI, road crown, etc) until ... redsoxgirl: My wife drives a 150-mile commute each day, 5 days a week, over the "grapevine" from Castaic to Bakersfield. We are not fast drivers (85 mph cruising). I appreciate the compliment, but I am hardly a "guru". I've been a Porsche owner for all of 5 1/2 months. My friend with a 2001 911TT (gettinga 2007 911 TT) has, by contrast been a Porsche owner for 30+ years. I read the other reply to your question and my opinion is different from that of the Honda S2000 owner. I've owned two Miatas. One was an original 1990 (1600cc engine)and the other was a 2001 (1800cc engine) special edition. I autocrossed both these cars. The Miata is an awesome handing car, with 11 straight national championships in autocross. You will find little evidence of cowl shake, which is present in ... Read More
I recently purchased a 2001, 911 cab; my first Porsche btw. I'm curious as to what "normal" operating temperature should be. It seems like during mild outside temps the needle hovers around 180, but when the ambient temp increases to 70 or so, the car's temp goes up to around 200. Just worried that when summer hits and it gets to 95 outside what to expect. Any advice would be appreciated. ... Read More
I seriously doubt you will see any changes to the base and S models of the 997 for at least 2 more years. Porsche is pretty busy getting the other models - GT3, Turbo, Turbo Cab - out in the 997 bodies. I've seen it speculated that, if the Cayman S gets a bump in power, the 911's will follow. But heck, the Cayman has only been out for a couple ... Read More

I would agree with points made by Don and bsumner - as might be expected from someone who bought a new 997 himself. However, in the spirit of fairness, I happen to know someone who has a 2001 911 Turbo Coupe with 11,000 miles that he will be selling to get a 997 Turbo, when they are available. He is a longtime Porsche enthusiast - still owns a 356 - and ... Read More

My opinions about your issues: (1) You can carry around small kids in your 911 Cab or Coupe. I have a 7, 5, and 3 year old, and all fit fine in my S Cab in the back. Actually, this is what happened. As my name (s4to911) implies, I have owned a 2001 Audi S4 for five years. I went to my local Audi/Porsche dealer about six weeks ago looking at some 2005 S4 Cabs (I wanted a convertible) and there was a Midnight Blue/Sand Beige 2005 911 S Cab on the lot (with navigation, Bose, heated seats, power seats, full leather, Sport Chrono, 19 inch Carrera Classic wheels, ... I believe that BMW makes some of the best performance sedans and coupes on the market - M5, M3, even the standard 5 and 3 series. But if they consider the M6 a sports car, let alone a competitor to the 911, someone in their marketing department has to have his head examined. Unfortunately, BMW has not made a competitive sports car since the M1. The Z3 and Z4 plop the ... Read More
It's probably against Town Hall rules, but I'll give you even odds on any amount of money up to $100k (enough to buy you two Corvettes, if you win), that the factory Corvette will not beat the Ferrari 430 in a one mile straight run. First, in the event I gave the wrong impression, I enjoy this discussion and I would not take anything personally - as I hope you wouldn't. Regarding "genetic material" in the S2000 and Boxster, I'm not as convinced as you. 1) Fiberglass weighs less than metals and is more resistant to dents. 2) Not to be rude, but do you have facts to support your assumption that Ferrari and Porsche owners won't consider the 2006 Corvette Z06? 3) Has no record in international racing?
