I'm trying to install new after market speakers in the rear of my 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. The issue is that the new speakers only have two connections (+,-) but the factory wiring harness has four wires. I cannot find an adapter that will fit this configuration, so I plan on just connecting one positive and one negative and taping the others off. Will this work, and if so, which wires are ... Jille58, Sorry for your bad luck. The passlock system is the same for all Alero's from 1999-2004. Have your mechanic go the link "2003 Oldsmobile Alero Passlock Repair" on my website at http://www.bergerweb.net and follow the instructions to the letter. If the radio is locked, it's because the mechanic removed it while the battery was connected. This only happens on rare occasions, but to get it working again, you will have ... Read More
My 2003 did this when it needed a new alternator. It also did it once when the battery needed replacing. I bought a new lifetime warranteed battery at Tires Plus (it's guaranteed). Look for coupons and you could pay around $50 for one. Also, check your plugs and wires.
Hi all, After reading all this post on this issue, I think I should trade in for a different car. We bought this car in Oct 08 with 41K miles, 03 model from a dealer. we ran into issue right after 15 days as it was covered under 1 month warranty the dealer said that the issue was with the Passlock system and it needed to update the code and the ... Yes it could! I had to put my key in, position to the first "click" and wait the entire night one time. Twice it sat in the dealers lot waiting out the same thing, as they could not find anything else wrong. The thing that is happening with my 2003 Alero, is that once this happens, and it reset's itself successfully, (the car starts) it doesn't happen again for a couple ... Read More
I had enough! I traded it off, with only 65,000 miles, for a 1994 Ford Ranger XLT pickup with 101,000 miles, even trade! I had the starting problem in April 2007, April 2008, June and July 2008. The only thing that my private mechanics can come up with, is the computer or key loses the programming. To start the car: Turn key on (just on, not to try to start) for ... Read More
From your description, it sounds like your not going to get anywhere with not having to pay for it yourself. You had a basic powertrain warranty, which isn't going to cover the wiring harness inside the car (I take it from your description that was where the problem occured, somewhere in the dash area around the radio). Your going to spend far more going the legal process than you can ever ... Read More
The year of the car is a 2003, so it's 5 years old, with 87 miles on it. When I bought the car, it was used, and it had only 80 miles on it. I only had the car for four months before this wiring harness fire happened. The warranty that was on the car, was for 180 days, which covered the axle, transmission, and motor, but nothing within the dashboard, ... Read More
How old is the car and what mileage? I assume it was used when you bought it from your description. What kind of warranty, if any, did it come with?
On September 17, 2008, the wiring harness on my Alero caught on fire, while driving the road. It started smoking, so I immediately pulled to the side of the road, cut the ignition switch off, and jumped out the car. The fire department came, and after looking under the hood of the car, and checking inside, they're solution was to take it back to the car dealer ship. I only had ... Read More
do you know how to install an aftermarket stereo in a 2003 Oldsmobile alero and if there is something special we have to do so something doesnt stop working?
In my opinion, one hub is too many. We have two Aleros in our family. My daughters was bought new in 2001 and has low mileage on it (42,000 miles). It has had the front right hub replaced, a few brake jobs, and the bubbling door panels. Her boyfriends has had the lower manifold gasket replaced at the cost of almost $700 from the local Pontiac dealer. Talking to anyone in ... Read More
I bought my 2003 Olds Alero in June 2003. First day I had it, I was hearing grinding noises, had to go back to the dealership, they replaced all 4 brakes, rotors, pads, everything. The car had 81 miles when I bought it. This should have been my first indication of things to come! I have had nothing but problems ever since from the alignment, to wheel bearings, to struts, brakes ... Read More
Keep in mind that 1999 was the first production year for the Alero, and GM still had a few bugs to work out. You might want to scan through all the postings here. It's a long haul, I know, but it will give you an idea of some of the problems people have experienced on a fairly consistent basis. Having said that, we own a 2000 Alero GLS, and overall we ... Looks to be around 24 mpg city, 33 mpg highway (that's pretty close to what we've had with our 2000 GLS, though this article rates it at 20 mpg city, 29 mpg highway): 2003 Oldsmobile Alero GX Sedan
I bought a 2001 Alero in December 2003. Since ownership, I've always had problems with the brakes. Is this common? My previous car was a Toyota Carina in the UK. Every year, the car had a service (Inspection) and that was all that was needed. I just had to pump petrol (Gas) and check the tire pressure. No oil changes or anything (just once a year). Do cars in the USA ... Read More

Folks, I too love the Alero and have was just about to buy one when the news hit this week. I have been reevaluating my purchase and will probably go ahead and buy a 2001 Alero. Here's why: Resale Value: Yes, resale value will probably be affected for the worse. Since I am about to buy, I can use that as a negotiating position! How much will resale be affected? This ... I'm not sure if there is a separate topic for this or not. I did not want to start a new topic if there was no interest. I saw some cool pictures of the Alero OSV show car.
