I bought this car new in 2014. It's beautiful and drives really well. At first it didn't seem peppy, but I got over that and learned how to get performance out of it.

I bought my car at 21,000 miles, I now have 225,000 miles. I have done all service myself. Changed struts, serpentine belt, filters all on time, oil change evert 6,000 miles, car is great but changing headlight bulbs every 3 months. Alternator went out at 200,000 miles. Well worth the money!

I bought a 2014 Jetta TDI after the diesel recall thinking I would simply get a little worse fuel economy and the car would be reliable and robust and since it had a warranty extension to 120k miles, I couldn't go wrong. What a mistake. The car was an extreme lemon. The high pressure fuel pump failed and the diesel particulate filter got clogged, I got a code about low sensor voltage which resulted in a broken glow plug and the entire head getting replaced which resulted in an exhaust smell in the passenger compartment that wouldn't go away. The car was in the shop for 8 months out of the 2 years I owned it across 3 different dealerships. Then the entire body started to rust in little pinpoints everywhere. This was the first time I bought at a dealership. The first thing they do is lie, then they lie and lie some more. My 1985 and 1997 gas powered Jettas were fun and very reliable. This 2014 diesel one was a nightmare. Eventually one dealership agreed to buy it from me instead of flailing on trying to fix it over and over again. No more VW's for me ever. 2/23/22: I bought a post-scandal Jetta thinking it would be a solid, reliable, surprisingly luxurious car that got slightly worse fuel economy since they redid the software. What I got was a mess of mechanical problems, lackluster performance overall and truly lousy fuel economy. The high pressure fuel pump went bad immediately. It's a known issue with these things and the dealership lied and said the aftermarket fuel filter I put in caused the problem. It was a VW/Audi branded filter that they had put in five months earlier as their own documentation. A different dealership replaced the fuel pump then the diesel particulate filter system filled up and the dealership replaced it. Then it smelled like exhaust in the passenger compartment at idle and the dealership said they couldn't figure it out and I should go somewhere else. Both times they did the repairs they had the car for several weeks. I owned this car about 18 months and drove it about 12 months. The rest of the time it was at one or another repair shop or I had to let it sit at my houyse until they had time open. And they didn't give me loaners until I twisted their arms even though the VW warranty says if a repair takes more than 3 hours you get a loaner. Corporate VW didn't help at all when I called them. I had an 86 and a 97 Jetta before, both gas powered. They were solid and reliable even though they were both thoroughly used before I bought them. I'm never buying another VW. They have obviously lost their engineering skills.

Fatiguing to drive long distances

Seats are and well shaped and comfortable for about 15 minutes, then you realize they are too hard and fatigue and soreness begins to set in. Road noise is prominent so between the noise and hard seats, the car is not one you look forward to driving long distances. The 2013 Corolla is considerably better for longer trips. I have not driven the resigned 2014 Corolla to see if it is still comfortable on long trips. Another undesirable feature of the Jetta is that the effort required to activate the power windows is very high. I've never experienced that in an American or Asian car.
