2009 Suzuki SX4
I purchased an SX4 crossover about 5 months ago based on my experiences with my 2000 Esteem. After a lot of research and searching I found an AWD automatic with all the options. What a wonderful little car! It is solid, capable and a great value. In my opinion this is the only car on the market if you need something easy to get into with AWD that is inexpensive and well made. My parents … are getting older and they are now considering buying the same car. My mom has back problems and she loved the ride quality and how easily she was able to get into the car. I have a Toyota Sienna and the head and door sill clearance are better on my SX4. Do yourself a favor and test drive one of these.
Update #2 I’ve had the car for nearly a year now and it’s been dead solid reliable. I took it on a 1000 mile trip with no issues.
Update #3 going on my 2nd year with the car. The only issue I have is some bad oil seals on the valves. In my experience this is due to poor maintenance. When I first saw the car I noticed sludge when I pulled the oil cap. I was hesitant to buy, but the price was right and it was the only one I could find with the options I wanted. The previous owner either didn’t change the oil often enough and/or used poor quality oil. I use full synthetic. Long term use cleans sludge but it also increases oil leaking past worn seals. I’ll have to take a weekend and replace the seals. That should fix the issue. But no other issues to report. Still dead reliable.
Update#4 Had to replace the engine about a year ago. I mentioned leaky oil vavle seals previously. Well we had a situation that took all of our attention and resources for about 2 months. Covid for parents and friends. We spent all of ourt time running errands and Dr appointments and I neglected checking the engine oil. It got very low once and a few weeks later the engine went kaput... I sourced a replacement engine but decided to go over the new one before I installed it. Good thing I did. The main bearings were shot. I got a partial refund and rebuilt the motor. Rebuild parts for these are extremly difficult to find.
I found the oil pump for these engines is chain driven and not that robust. I would much rather see a gear driven oil pump. I still feel the engine failure was due to poor maintenance by the previous owner, but unfortuately I can no longer recomend this car to anyone.
I've seen quite a few SX4's for sale with bad engines. This in combination with my experience leads me to think the oiling systems on these engines is inadequate.
If you run full synthetic and keep a watchful eye on the levels you will probably be ok. I've had no more issues with mine and the new engine does not use any oil. But I'm still concerned that the oil pump is just not up to the job.
