2015 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive
As MB’s first real attempt to put their metaphorical toes in the shallow end of the EV pool...not too shabby. As MB explores the deeper end of the EV pool by putting out a new larger SUV, I suspect there will be quite a bit more attention payed to this model as it’s product line ended in 2017. As interest rises, supply drops, prices will likely NOT drop quickly or MAY actually … increase...for those that value a luxurious EV (for a EV), the MB brand, and a relaxing daily commuter.
This is a really good car; but unfortunately, not a really great one. First, the obvious. If you’re already researching EVs, then you probably already know the lack of a quick charger option. From my understanding this was because MB used an ICE platform and there was not enough room to add a second (quick charge) port.
Let’s set the record straight. There is absolutely no competition with this car among EVs with similar ranges. Some may want you to think that BMW’s i3 is the obvious competition. That is not true in the slightest. The i3 IS a really good car... if you’re interested in a futuristic appearing, 1000 pounds lighter, marginally quicker, flighty handling EV on the highway due to its rail thin tires. So you see, the i3 targets completely different demographics than MB’s small EV.
The other comparisons like, the Nissan LEAF, VW e-golf, Ford Focus EV etc. etc. also targets completely different demographics. So, the MB EV is in a league of its own.
So the good stuff is that it’s a short range luxury EV with absolutely no competition. Although the listed range is 87ish, to add insult to injury, the real range is around a 100 miles due to the way Tesla configured the drivetrain and battery. There’s lots of literature about that, so I won’t bore you with the details.
Now the not so good stuff. There are things like a rear camera that much cheaper EV’s have as standard equipment is ONLY an option with the MB EV! Don’t assume anything when purchasing this EV. Make sure every option you want on a car is available.
The base price of this EV when compared to an i3 is about the same. But like Tesla’s model 3, options can drive the cost of the vehicle to nosebleed heights, quite a few EV’s are NOT what many consider “fully loaded”. Lastly, buy an extended warranty, no such thing of a cheap Mercedes when it comes to repairing them!
