2020 Kia Telluride
First, let me say that Kia was not even on radar when I started looking for a vehicle, but my wife saw some reviews and suggested I look at one. I was considering several mid sized SUVs including the Telluride, Honda Pilot, Acura MDX, Subaru Ascent and Ford Explorer. In the end the final choice came down to the Telluride (EX model) and the Pilot (Touring model). Several items made the … decision quite easy. First the front passenger room in the Pilot is extremely limited and I am only 5' 10" (the driver's side has more room, please note that the front seat legroom dimensions quoted for every car are measured on the drivers side). Second, the Pilot's interior is bland compared to the Telluride. Third, the 9 speed transmission in the Pilot Touring is not very smooth based on my test drive. Fourth, the handling on the Pilot is not quite as good as the Telluride (not just my opinion, look at Consumer Reports [who are totally independent], numbers on emergency handling and braking). Fifth, there is very little room behind the third seat for luggage.
Please note that we have owned a Honda Pilot and 6 Acura's over the years so we are big fans of Honda products.
The Telluride has exceeded our expectations by a wide margin. I find the ride better and quieter than the Pilot. There are features on the Telluride that I feel are better than the Pilot and vice versa, but overall I feel that the edge clearly goes to the Telluride. It is still too early to know how reliable the Telluride will be and how good the safety ratings are going to be so I cannot comment on those.
I will say that there is one feature not on the EX that are on many cars and that is the lack of memory seat/mirror settings for the drivers seat.
I know many people are complaining about having to pay thousands over MSRP, but if you are willing to search around you can find them for only slight markups. Personally, I think the vehicle is underpriced by several thousand dollars at a bare minimum. There have also been a few complaints about issues, these is typical for every totally new model that comes out and the sooner you buy after initial introduction the more likely it is to have problems as various bugs get worked out.
