We were choosing between a Model 3 Tesla and the Mach-E. We already have a Model Y, so either way, we were going two EVs. Had the Model 3 on order and the car was ready for us to buy - if we put the money down - beyond the $100. A friend asked why not consider the Mach-E? Still get a tax credit of $7500 and pretty fun to drive.
So, we test drove and it is fun. The pick up is maybe a … hair less fierce than the Tesla but not by much. There are some aspects we prefer and some we like less. The good things is build quality. Decades of building cars with tight tolerances on panel gaps etc shows. Simple things such as the car in the blind spot indicator on the mirror are tried and tested and seem better than Tesla's red car on the big screen system. Control of the air vents is easier, as is having the limited display in front of the steering wheel rather than everything on the big monitor in the middle. The door handles are great and make the look very sleek. The cabin is spacious and headroom is very good. The car handles very, very well and we like the aero wheels. The driving-influenced feed back on range (heavy foot less range) feature is a time tested feature that Tesla does not really have. That is more relevant in the Mach-E because we did not get the extended range (back-ordered for months), so we have 300 miles on Tesla vs. 200 on the Mach-E.
Charging infrastructure is not something we are familiar with yet because we are just charging at home. We have the adapter to plug the Tesla plug into the Mach-E but that will not yet work with the Tesla superchargers. At home it works fine and the non-Tesla EV infrastructure will definitely improve.
The connectivity of the Mach-E to Apple Car Play is better than the Tesla, but otherwise, the software is where the Tesla pulls away. Configuring profiles and phone as a key features in the Mach-E is not nearly as intuitive as in the Tesla: it is fiddly. The Tesla is just very Apple like in its operation. It is a platform that was designed that way from the ground up. Ford is incorporating the Tesla ethos into its existing platform. In that respect, it feels very v1.9 as opposed to 2.0.
The access to features through the screen, though, may be a little better on the Ford. It has an onscreen manual, whereas with the Tesla we have on many occasions had to google "how to find how to...." on the Tesla and found the item lurking in some part of the screen submenu.
The Mach-E feels more like driving a car around rather than a sleek iphone on wheels.
Buying the Mach-E can feel like a more traditional, unpleasant and disagreeable car showroom experience. We had one of those where the salesman tried to sell us on marking up the MSRP because of demand (Scarsdale Ford). We left and went to Stevens Ford in Milford and dealt with a great salesman who we were referred to. No mark-up and great experience. Tesla is still more fun in that respect though: sales are totally online and showroom is just for demo. Very good.
Overall, it is great to have the Mach-E and also great to have both platforms to compare.
