2018 Buick Regal TourX
Bought a used 2018 loaded Essence model w/ 68K. I don't think I could have found a better vehicle for my 35 mile (each way) commute to work each day. The boxes I needed to check were: practicality, power (no slower than my '96 Nissan Maxima which this vehicle is replacing), not too expensive, good fuel economy, that looks good. Can't do the crossover/SUV thing, they just don't fit my … driving style and there's a fuel economy penalty for riding high and sucking at handling. This wagon checked all the boxes and looks darn good doing it. A few thoughts:
Exterior: I'm not a huge fan of the rear end design (chrome strip that runs into tail-lights is sort of off putting to me), but the rest of the car makes up for it. Before knowing this was a Buick, if someone slapped a Mercedes/BMW emblem on the front grill and I viewed it from that direction, I wouldn't have questioned it. Looks great from the side as well, very sleek design.
Interior: Soft materials in all the right places, some reviewers complain about cheaper/hard plastics used for a "premium" brand-- they have a point, but what cost cutting GM did in that regard was done REALLY well. I honestly don't notice it unless I'm looking for a reason to fault the interior. The whole interior flows nicely, looks great, especially at night with the ambiance lighting strips. Controls are convenient and easy to use with good lighting at night. I have zero complaints about the interior and feel it's one of the best attributes of this car. Leather doesn't seem particularly high quality, but after 70K it's held up well and I hope that continues.
Mechanicals: The LTG 2.0L turbo engine is a true gem. It's been many years since I've owned a four cylinder; always disliked them due to coarseness / noise, but this is leaps and bounds better than any 4 cyl I've ever owned. Extremely smooth and refined. Over 1500rpm or so, it has power anytime you need it and has diesel-like torque in all the normal driving situations, I rarely see it go over 2500RPM under acceleration unless I'm in a big hurry. The transmission is certainly geared for fuel economy, so it takes some prodding of the gas pedal if you want to drive spiritedly, or you can use the manual mode. Lots of torque management built in, there's a perceptible delay in between most shifts, but I don't find it offensive.
For my commute, I seem to average 25-26mpg, mostly highway doing 70-80mph. Was hoping for better, but I'm not complaining either given the power this engine has when you want it and how effortless it feels during normal driving.
AWD does it's thing imperceptibly. Want to stoplight drag race in the rain with that idiot that cut off 2 drivers to get in the lane beside you? This car will do it. You'll smoke that V6 Charger or 80% of other vehicles on the road.
Ride / Comfort: This thing is literally a dream to drive. Granted I'm coming from an older car, but I've ridden/driven a lot of newer vehicles. Quiet and composed, handles extremely well for a car this size, while maintaining a smooth ride.
Complaints:
Not much center console storage (given its large size). Not really an issue for me, but the wife would surely have complaints if she can't store 3 water bottles and dump her oversize purse contents into it.
Blind spot monitor has no audible alert when you attempt to change lanes with a car beside you. I feel this defeats the purpose of BSM. Obviously I don't make a habit of turning into vehicles, but sometimes my preparation for lane change (turn signal) timing is quicker than I can turn my head around, and I get surprised by a vehicle beside me that I hadn't anticipated (I'm one of those ones that try to be aware of vehicles around me at all times), Doesn't happen very often, but still would like some beep or something as I rarely look at the LED indicator in the mirrors.
No ventilated seat option on a 2018 with black leather? Terrible omission. Also no front parking sensors or camera, which I found odd on a highly equipped 2018 vehicle. That huge sunroof glass over my head has some creaking to it at slow speeds / rough pavement. Turning the radio up solves that issue. Start/stop system is very annoying at times, wish it had a way to be more selective when it shuts the engine down. Will shut down anytime you come to a stop, whether you're in the front of your garage for 3 seconds waiting for the door to open, in stop and go traffic that is crawling along, etc. Selecting manual transmission mode defeats it, but it's a chore to remember at times.
2.0L LTG engine is known for leaking oil at the bottom of the timing chain cover, even on new cars. Mine seeps, but so far no drips. I suspect it's been that way for a long time and hopefully will not get worse.
Special mention:
The LED headlights are AWESOME, illuminates the road in all conditions way better than anything I've ever driven, very high tech.
In conclusion, super glad I bought this car, zero regrets. Have put about 3K on it since owning it and it's definitely my favorite for a comfortable commuter.
