The 2002 Toyota Prius is without a doubt the best car I have owned in terms of quality and reliablity. In the 18 months I have owned the car I have not had even one problem; only returning to the dealer for oil changes and scheduled maintenance. The car is very quite and comfortable even for long trips (Austin to Los Angeles, Austin to Mexico City for example).
This is The One!

Downside: Does not track well at speed on highways. Does not deliver advertised gas mileage. No wagon or 5-door sedan available. Upside: Noveltly never quits. Delight to drive in town. Quality throughout. Excellent driver's position, visibility. Easy entry and exit for us old folks. Peace and quiet, but not with max uphill or passing situations. Our riders like it, nice back seat.

The Prius has great gas mileage! The highest I have acheived is 58.8. It has surprising power too. I had five adults in the car with the A/C on, while passing 18-wheelers. There are problems with it. On my car, the build quality has been disappointing, and so has the reliability. It is in the shop now for a new rack-and-pinion.
