Do not buy. Wait until they work out the bugs

2024 Grand Highlander purchased Oct 2023 1- Replaced defective front axle within first 500 miles. 2- Still outstanding air bag recall. 3- As others have mentioned, check engine light with these messages at 14000 miles: system malfunction, drive start control malfunction, AWD malfunction 2WD Mode engaged…Visit your dealer. They updated the Engine Control Unit and issue went away. 4- Poorly fitted driver side carpet 5- After 9 months of broken promises of receiving the second key fob, they supposedly now have one on order. That was only after multiple complaints. Other than that, it’s a nice SUV. It’s our fourth Highlander. Slightly better gas mileage and performance than our 2019. But do not buy this year’s model!

Car is fine but Toyota is Disappointing

The vehicle is fine. No specific issues. Wife loves it after 4k miles. Lots of tech in the vehicle and I'm not sure it's all ready for prime-time. ***As of Feb 2024 you still will not get a second key fob when you purchase the car*** I've been waiting 5+ months as have most other owners. Toyota should be able to do better., The digital key on your phone is difficult to set up and when you do get it working its glitchy so I wouldn't rely it. Overall the Toyota app is poor. Owners manuals are huge and it can be hard to find what you're looking for in there. Outside of the tech the car works great and in hybrid trim gets good gas mileage for a vehicle this size. As of 2/2024 these cars are still hard to find and many dealers are marking up the hybrid models, sometimes significantly. So shop around to get a good deal but be prepared to wait to get exactly what you want.

Full of recalls

Still 9 months after taking possession, I have not received the second key. Knocking sounds from the suspension when accelerating and turning at the same time. LCD display has crashed several times and is on recall without a fix. Proximity sensors keep malfunctioning and is on recall without a known fix. Skip this vehicle.

Cabin boom is real

Chris, 06/29/2025

Before purchasing a Grand Highlander, be sure to google "grand highlander cabin boom". This is an engineering defect (Toyota calls it a "characteristic") that results in a low frequency booming noise in your ears as you drive at low speeds. Similar to when one back window is open, but not exactly. It's worse. Like being inside a drum. Based on the posts on Reddit, cabin boom does not affect all GHs, and it's not limited to just a certain model or trim. So before purchasing you need to test drive like crazy the exact car you plan to take home. Test drive it on local roads going less than 20 - 25 mph. Unfortunately we didn't know about this problem until after purchase. Even though we reported the problem within hours, and took the car back to the dealership, and said we didn't want the car due to this issue, they only offered to buy the car back with depreciation. Buy with caution.

What happened to quality

After a year and a half with this vehicle, it's been back to the shop at least twice for various reasons it has three recalls still unresolved I continue to have issues with the drive shaft in the front wheels knocking which sounds like gears are slipping. They've replaced these axles once and within 30 days the noise came back. Not to mention it took over a year to get my spare key, still have unresolved issues with the LCD display and radio controls. I cannot get the back tailgate to open or close with the foot recognition switch. I feel like I'm doing a dance in front of the entire world trying to get the door to close when I have my hands full. Awful car don't recommend.
