2008 Saturn Astra XR 2dr Hatchback (1.8L 4cyl 5M)

The first Astra I saw was in London and I loved it. I always wondered why American car companies sold "better" designed cars abroad and why we didn't get a chance to own them. Finally, they are listening. When I bought my Astra, gas prices wasn't as big of a concern as it is now. I bought the car for it's overall design, its handling and practical features (love hatchbacks). I used to own a Mazda3 and this really blows that car out of water. Back to mileage, it is rated 24-34, but I consistently get higher mileage on the highway. A trip from Denver to Vail and back averaged over 37 mpg. Only once did I need to shift into 4th gear. The engine has great torque.

A SUBSTANDARD VEHICLE JUST LIKE THE MAJORITY

This car was made in Europe and imported to the USA. You have to drop the engine cradle to remove the alternator driving the time and cost up by 4-6 times and eliminating most DIYers. No service manuals or Saturn mechanics left to guide the DIYer or to hire. Haynes manual instructions are wrong and incomplete. Chilton's manual is wrong and incomplete. Leather seats are better are way better than the cheap American leather. Will last twice as long. Car runs hotter than most and only gets about 20.4 MPG combined. Engineers that designed this car were very stupid and careless. Overall a PITA and would NOT recommend it as a used car purchase.

We bought one as a first vehicle for our daughter last year. I am proud to say that it has 139,000 miles and we still haven't had ANY issues!

Making Great Even Better

Discovering this car was a "what is it?" process. I had driven the Mini & a number of other smaller cars; all disappointments. One day the hubster & I saw the Astra and were immediately taken w/its European good looks & sporty flair. The test drive was remarkably fun; this little vehicle handles like a rally car around tight corners. I purchased the 5-speed to up the fun factor even higher & got every option it comes with (everything under the sun + car for $20,300) and I'm glad I did. The 'opera' audio system sounds expensive, the 17-alloy wheels really improve the looks and the steering wheel audio controls are nicenicenice. The Astra is an example of GM doing something right!
