Test Driver Ratings & Comments

Acceleration commentsMaybe I was expecting more, since the last Cayman I tested was an "S," but the base 2.7L Cayman barely has enough power to scratch a tire on an aggressive launch. Also, there's a 5,000-rpm limiter from a standstill, making it pretty pointless to try. Still, it sounds great, the shifter is a precision instrument, and this engine has a mile-high limiter. I wonder why, then, did they gear it so tall (2nd gear is good for 75 mph). There's a slight cam-phase thing that happens around 4,500 rpm, like VTEC engines used to do.
Braking commentsStops like every Porsche we've ever tested: Short, firm, highly fade-resistant and arrow-straight without a fuss. Shortest stop occurred on the fourth of seven -- which was just 6 inches longer than the best.
Handling commentsSlalom: As with acceleration, this test (just shy of 70 mph) was a little disappointing within the realm of this Porsche. It's still the epitome of a midengine sports car, but maybe it's merely the tires' grip-then-let-go characteristics or the ESC not being liberal enough to allow the car to rotate a little. Skid pad: Here, the ESC was happy to allow a generous slip angle that I could maintain all the way around the circle simply by manipulating the throttle and not the steering. Superb balance and control. I found the steering weight a little excessive here, though.
