Pros
- GLA 250's smooth ride and comfortable seats
- Features one of today's best, most advanced infotainment systems
- Mercedes badge at an affordable price
- Exciting performance from the AMG GLA 45 model
Cons
- Most of the GLA's advanced safety features are optional
- Too much road noise for a luxury SUV
- Cargo capacity is small compared to Mercedes' GLB
- AMG GLA 45 has a pretty stiff ride
What's new
- The GLA has been fully redesigned for 2021
- Part of the second GLA generation introduced for 2021
Overview
We weren't terribly impressed with the first-generation GLA when Mercedes introduced it for the 2015 model year. It wasn't particularly enjoyable to drive, nor was it very practical. Thankfully, the all-new second-generation 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA addresses all of its predecessor's drawbacks and catapults to a much more favorable Edmunds ranking.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class AMG GLA 45 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8AM) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.07 per gallon for premium unleaded in Virginia.

Avg. Compact SUV
The 2021 GLA offers all of Mercedes' latest technology features. The MBUX infotainment system, with its two available 10.25-inch screens and "Hey, Mercedes" voice assistant, is available along with a full suite of advanced driver aids and active safety features.
The cabin is significantly improved over the existing GLA, both in its materials quality and space. If you've sat in an A-Class sedan, you'll be familiar with the smart finishes on elements such as the air vents and the buttons in the center console. There's a lot more headroom than before too, and that's transformational for the driver and front passenger. You sit higher, with a better view through the taller and less severely raked windscreen.
Even as an entry-level SUV model, it's much more deserving of the Mercedes-Benz badge than before. Interestingly, Mercedes also has its new GLB SUV. It's similar in concept and price but offers more passenger and cargo space. But the GLB has blockier styling, especially in contrast to the GLA's sleekness. In any case, the new GLA is a solid pick for an extra-small luxury SUV and compares well against the Audi Q3 and BMW X1.

Our VerdictThe Edmunds Vehicle Testing Team evaluates a fresh batch of vehicles every week, pairing objective assessments at our test track with real-world driving on city streets, freeways and winding roads. The data we gather results in our Expert Ratings. They’re based on 30-plus scores that cover every aspect of the automotive experience.
We're glad the GLA 45 exists because it's proof that manufacturers can still make vehicles that are a little bit crazy. With 382 horsepower, sticky tires, powerful brakes and agile handling, this GLA is a genuine thrill machine. But all that awesome will cost you.
Rated for you by America's best test team.
Performance
8.0/10
How does the AMG GLA 45 drive? Our test AMG GLA 45 sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds at Edmunds' test track. Sticky summer tires, a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system, an adaptive suspension and powerful brakes ensure the GLA has the grip, handling chops and stopping power to match too. It feels eager to be pushed and engaging. This is less SUV, more curve-devouring hatchback.
The transmission tuning is our main disappointment. While crisp and responsive under spirited driving, shifting can be clunky and unrefined in most other scenarios. We found it mildly frustrating in daily driving.

Comfort
6.5/10
How comfortable is the AMG GLA 45? While most performance vehicles have to trade away comfort to some degree, we think the GLA 45 gives up a little too much. The biggest offense here is the ride quality. It didn't help the case that our test car came with the optional 21-inch wheels, which likely exacerbated the effect of a stiffer performance suspension.
Our second biggest complaint was the level of road noise permeating the cabin. It would be difficult to hold a conversation at normal speaking volumes on anything less than a smooth road surface. Also, the front seats can start to get uncomfortable after a couple of hours. They could provide more support during spirited driving too. Optional performance seats are available but weren't equipped on our car.
At least the dual-zone climate control is easy to use and keeps the cabin at comfortable temperatures.

Interior
8.0/10
How’s the interior? The ride height and sensibly shaped doors make it easy to get in and out of the GLA even in very tight spots. The wide adjustment range for the driver's seat and steering column should allow for most drivers to find their ideal seating position.
The Mercedes MBUX interface remains an example of how to do it right because it provides so many options for control. The primary controls are logically placed and easy to locate. You can also control much of what's on the screen by touchpad, touchscreen, steering wheel thumbpads or voice.
The cabin is surprisingly spacious and airy considering the GLA's sleeker profile. There's plenty of adult-sized space in the rear, with generous amounts of leg- and headroom. Visibility is another characteristic that we didn't expect would be good, but it is despite the GLA's body shape. The view out of the front as well as to the sides and rear is pretty unobstructed. An optional 360-degree view camera is available, though we didn't have one, and for the most part didn't need it.

Technology
8.0/10
How’s the tech? The GLA sports some great tech features. What we like best is the onboard navigation, which continues to be one of the best systems on the market. Mercedes' MBUX system is one of the easiest systems to use thanks to its many control options (touchscreen, trackpad, voice control and steering-wheel thumb controllers), and the voice commands are also top-notch. There are also an abundance of charging options for both front and rear passenger devices.
The GLA, however, stumbles in the execution of its advanced driving aids. Mercedes usually does a good job in this area, but we found the lane keeping assist less than useful. Adaptive cruise was also a bit too clever for its own good with all its predictive speed functions turned on (it slowed unhelpfully at unexpected times) so we had to disable those as well.

Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? Cargo capacity behind the rear seats is only 15.4 cubic feet, which is more in line with what we expect from a midsize sedan. It's accommodating but small compared to the cargo areas in the same SUV size class. The low liftover height does make loading heavy objects easier.
There are moderately sized bins and pockets for your small items. The cupholders feature some nifty spring-loaded tabs to better secure smaller beverages. A rubberized tray also does a good job of keeping your smartphone from sliding around. It also serves as a wireless charging pad if you pick that option. Need to install a child seat? There's a decent amount of space back there that should accommodate even a larger rear-facing infant seat without compromising front passenger space too much. The car-seat top tethers and Isofix anchor points are easy to locate and access.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10
How economical is the AMG GLA 45? The GLA 45's four-cylinder is about as high-strung as they come, but it returned decent economy during our time with it. We got 22.9 mpg on our real-world evaluation route. That tells us that as long as you're not heavy-footed, matching its EPA estimate of 23 mpg combined (20 city/27 highway) should be achievable. Though there's nothing really to compare it against directly, we'd consider this decent efficiency for the level of performance.
Value
7.0/10
Is the AMG GLA 45 a good value? The GLA 45's as-new base starting price is somewhat reasonable, but by the time you add some options the value becomes questionable. The GLA just doesn't offer the versatility we'd expect for what it costs. As for build quality, the interior feels solid, but aspects of the cabin, including plastic pieces and cheaper-looking leather, fail to provide a wholly convincing picture of luxury.
The warranty is typical, with four years/50,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverage. Roadside assistance is covered for four years/50,000 miles, but Mercedes doesn't give you any complimentary maintenance like some other automakers do.

Wildcard
8.5/10
The GLA 45 delivers incredible speed, grip and nimbleness when you're out for a dose of driving thrills, but it's a few degrees less enjoyable if you're just wanting a comfy cruise. Our GLA test vehicle also came with bonus flair in the form of the optional aerodynamics package, which adds a somewhat silly looking roof spoiler as well as aggressive-looking front bumper elements. No thanks. The good news is they're optional, so if you prefer a more understated look, you can have it and save some money in the process.
Which GLA-Class does Edmunds recommend?
Most drivers should be satisfied with the performance of the base GLA 250. Make sure to get the optional Driver Assistance package that adds some advanced driver safety features such as traffic-adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist. The Premium package, with its bigger touchscreen displays, is another recommended pick.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class AMG GLA 45 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8AM)
Now that I’m older and facing health issues I needed something more suitable than the 63 AMG I had and loved. This is it! Power and handling are almost as good. Comfort is as good or better. MBUX is okay so far. Build quality is exemplary. While I have happily owned SLCs, Corvettes, Carreras and Macans in the past I am perfectly happy in my GLA 45 AMG.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class AMG GLA 45 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8AM)
At age 74, I traded my ferocious '19 Z06 Corvette M7 even up for a loaded 2021 GLA 45 AMG. I immediately noticed the comfort and manners of the Mercedes, and decided I could live with a 12.6 1/4 mile instead of the 11.0 1/4 of said Corvette. Of the 17 new cars I've owned, this is the best. Comfort, sportiness, decent fuel economy, utility. And with Race Mode, it launches HARD. I had no … issues with the new car, and it hasn't had to go back to the dealer for anything. And no rattles! Solid as a bank vault. Despite getting absolutely no press, I consider this as close to a perfect vehicle as there is, when you consider utility, comfort, efficiency, size, and performance. Is it more expensive? Sure, but it isn't unreasonably so. Have I mentioned that I love it??

MARK TAKAHASHI: Subcompact or extra small SUVs are rapidly gaining popularity among shoppers, and it makes perfect sense. Most drivers aren't willing to give up the elevated ride height and greater view of the road once they've experienced driving one. But not everyone needs something as big as a Suburban or even a CRV.
The newer class of pint-sized SUVs benefit from a sedan-sized footprint that makes them easy to maneuver and park while also returning strong fuel economy. They also provide a much bigger and more flexible cargo area than the typical sedan. They're not the best choice for growing families, but they're great for almost everyone else, from first-time drivers to empty-nesters.
Before we tear through the list, do us a favor. Hit like and subscribe below and head over to edmunds.com/sellmycar to get a cash offer on your vehicle. Here then are the best subcompact crossover SUVs that have made it through Edmunds' exhaustive evaluations that include track testing and real-world driving. Whether you're looking for something basic or luxurious, we've got you covered.
We're starting with the best here. As we're filming this in July, 2021, we rank the Chevy Trailblazer as the best subcompact crossover. Like any of the vehicles in this class, it's easy to drive and packed with features.
The Trailblazer further distinguishes itself with sharp Camero-like styling and positively spacious rear seats. It's not particularly quick, even with a more powerful 1.3-liter engine upgrade. Handling is pretty far from what we consider inspiring, too. But then again, most shoppers aren't really looking for something sporty in this segment. For them, the Trailblazer would be more than adequate. This new Trailblazer easily exceeded expectations, and we're confident you'll be just as pleasantly surprised by how good it is.
In a very close second place is the Mazda CX-30. Not only does it stand out from the rest with its sleek style, but it continues to impress with an interior that rivals some luxury brands. What's better, it's way more fun to drive. The base engine gets the CX-30 to 60 miles an hour in nine seconds, which is a little quicker than average, while the new turbo-charge option gets you there in only 6.4 seconds.
That makes it the quickest in the class. It's also a Mazda, which means it handles the curves better than rivals, yet the ride quality remains calm and comfortable. Drawbacks are few, forgiveable, and includes some big blind spots and below-average fuel economy.
Frankly, it's been a while since Buick has been in a best of list. But it's good to see them back with the Encore GX. Considering it's related to the top Chevy Trailblazer, it makes perfect sense.
It's in a numerical tie with the Mazda, bolstered by similar levels of sporty handling, ride comfort, and appealing style. It further benefits from a slightly larger cargo space, but it's held back by its loud engine, noticeable road noise, and thick roof pillars that make it hard to see out the back. It can also be a little more expensive than others in this class.
The Hyundai Kona is right in there with an equally impressive Edmunds' rating score. Like the CX-30, it has a punchy turbo engine option, and it's perfectly at home on a twisty mountain road. As with most Hyundais, the Kona earns more points for value as you get a lot of features for the money as well as the longest warranty coverage in the industry. It's pretty likely that the Kona could meet or beat the Mazda with a stronger base engine and smoother shifts in the turbo's transmission. It also gets knocked for the abundance of hard plastics inside and smaller rear passenger and cargo space.
And finally the Subaru Crosstrek isn't easy. Is it a wagon, a hatchback, a subcompact crossover? Whatever you call it, it's in a three-way tie for second place with the Buick and Hyundai. The Crosstrek sets itself apart from the rest with taller ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive, giving it greater abilities off-road or in nasty weather.
We also like it for its spacious rear seats and comfortable ride. The base engine is pretty weak, but a new larger and more powerful 182-horsepower engine in the top trends should solve that. There's quite a bit of body roll when taking turns, though, and the cargo capacity is on the small side.
Let's say you're looking for something a little nicer than the very fine Mazda. That's where we get into the luxury class of subcompacts. They offer all the same driving and convenience advantages of previous picks but step it up with more refined interiors, newer tech, and added prestige, for a price, of course.
The GLB class is relatively new on the scene, but it made a big impact. It debuted as our top pick in the subcompact luxury SUV class, due in no small part to its spacious interior, decent performance, and high levels of comfort. It's also packed with tech, including the praiseworthy MBUX infotainment system.
We also like the GLB for its rugged boxy shape that reminds us of the big G-class that resides on the other side of the pricing scale. I like to call it the lower case g-wagon. It is still a Mercedes, though, which means the price can easily spiral out of control when you start adding options. The standard GLB-250 is very competent but isn't all that exciting to drive. The good news is there's an AMG version with 302 horsepower that should easily correct that.
If you're seeking a sporty counterpart to the competent GLB without spending another $10,000 for the AMG version, perhaps you should check out the BMW X1. On paper, the X1's 27.1-cubic-foot cargo capacity beats the GLB by about five cubic feet. But that includes the underfloor area that is usually where the spare tire is. With more realistic above-floor usage, the GLB pulls ahead thanks to its boxy shape that can accept bulkier objects.
The X1's sporty handling will keep spirited drivers happy on a twisty mountain pass and the potent turbocharged engine has more than enough power. It'll reach 60 miles an hour in 6.4 seconds, which is only 1/10 ahead of the GLB, but the BMW's sharper responses make it feel quicker. The drawback to that sporty handling is a stiffer ride quality.
Remember the first-generation Mercedes GLA that debuted back in 2015? Well, forget about that one because it was terrible. This new one is great, though. Why? Because it's pretty much the same as a class-leading GLB.
But instead of a boxy throwback silhouette, it has a sleeker, tapered body. That shape results in reduced rear headroom and quite a bit less cargo space, about 1/3 less than the GLB actually. With only 15.4 cubic feet, that capacity is about what we expect from smaller sedans. Otherwise, the GLA delivers the same experience as the GLB, with decent performance, high scores for comfort, a great infotainment system, and a powerful AMG variant with an overly stiff suspension. If boxy isn't your thing, the GLA might be a good compromise.
Rounding out the German luxury trinity is the Audi Q3, which like the others is loaded with all the latest tech and features a refined interior. It's not terribly fun to drive, though, as it takes 7.8 seconds to reach 60 miles an hour, making it one of the slower picks in the class. On top of that, it also misses the mark slightly when it comes to fuel economy. The responsive steering and composed handling allow the Q3 to handle curves with confidence. But if you're hoping for something sporty, let's stick with the BMW X1.
Closing out the luxury subcompacts is one of my favorites, the Volvo XC40. This funky futuristic alternative is big on design and clever features. And since it's a Volvo, safety plays a key role.
I'm particularly a fan of the many storage solutions the designers built into the XC40. There's a hook that flips out from the glove box to hold bags, a handy little waste bin in the center console, and one of the most versatile cargo areas around. It could use some suspension tweaks to improve handling, though, and the infotainment system isn't nearly as intuitive as the ones found in its German rivals.
Well, that's it for our current list of the best subcompact crossover SUVs. During the course of the year, these rankings may change with the introduction of newer models. So remember to check out edmunds.com for all the latest news, reviews, and information. Thanks for watching and don't forget to hit the like and subscribe buttons below.

Should I lease or buy a 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class?
Is it better to lease or buy a car? Ask most people and they'll probably tell you that car buying is the way to go. And from a financial perspective, it's true, provided you're willing to make higher monthly payments, pay off the loan in full and keep the car for a few years. Leasing, on the other hand, can be a less expensive option on a month-to-month basis. It's also good if you're someone who likes to drive a new car every three years or so.
