2021 Jaguar F-Pace Review

  • Powerful V6 engine delivers quick acceleration
  • More cargo space than most rivals
  • Handles and brakes like a sport sedan
  • Larger wheels hurt ride comfort
  • More road and wind noise in the cabin than in competitors
  • Revised front and rear styling
  • New 11.4-inch infotainment screen with updated software
  • New V6 engine available with 335 or 395 hp
  • Thoroughly redesigned interior
  • Part of the first F-Pace generation introduced for 2017

The 2021 Jaguar F-Pace is larger than the typical small SUV but not quite as large as midsize SUVs. In terms of price, however, it's more in line with the midsize class. We've been fans of the F-Pace since it debuted in 2017, particularly for its sleek style and sporty driving dynamics. Unfortunately, it also had plenty of drawbacks, including some disappointing cabin materials and a glitch-plagued infotainment system.

Encouragingly, the 2021 F-Pace had had a significant refresh. It has updated front and rear styling and a significant interior makeover. The cabin materials are noticeably improved, the infotainment system is all-new, and an active noise cancellation system should minimize highway noise inside. Under the hood, the F-Pace gains a new turbocharged six-cylinder engine that's a little more powerful and fuel efficient than last year's supercharged engine. A base four-cylinder engine and a raucous 550-horsepower V8 in the SVR trim are still available, too.

We haven't had the opportunity to give the 2021 F-Pace a full Edmunds evaluation, but expect these changes to improve its standing in the class, though perhaps not enough to challenge the top-rated Mercedes GLE or supporting Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5. Keep checking back to see where it ultimately ranks.

What's it like to live with?

For more information on the Jaguar F-Pace of this generation, read about our experiences from a full year of living with a 2017 Jaguar F-Pace 35t Prestige. We cover everything from in-car tech to fuel efficiency. The F-Pace's performance and style won many of us over, but we all took issue with its ride comfort, price and infotainment system. The 2021 F-Pace has a number of improvements compared to that model, but many of our observations still apply.

Which F-PACE does Edmunds recommend?

One of the Jaguar F-Pace's greatest assets is in the way it drives. For that reason, we suggest stepping up to at least the F-Pace S with the P340 six-cylinder engine. It's noticeably more powerful than the base P250 four-cylinder and is only slightly less fuel efficient.

Jaguar F-PACE models

The 2021 Jaguar F-Pace is a five-passenger luxury SUV, available in four trim levels: Base, S, R-Dynamic S and SVR. These trim levels are mostly aligned with the four engine choices. Regardless of which model you choose, the maximum tow rating is a respectable 5,291 pounds.

Base F-Pace
The base model F-Pace is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (246 horsepower, 269 lb-ft of torque) that Jaguar labels the P250. It's paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels. Standard feature highlights include:

  • Heated, power-folding mirrors
  • Auto-dimming rearview and driver-side mirrors
  • Interior ambient lighting
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Power-adjustable and heated front seats
  • Simulated leather upholstery
  • 11.4-inch touchscreen
  • 13-speaker Meridian audio system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • Wireless charging pad with signal booster
  • Remote monitoring and control via a smartphone app
  • Advanced safety and driver assistants:
    • Frontal collision mitigation  (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
    • Front and rear parking sensors  (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of or behind the vehicle when parking)
    • Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the vehicle and its surroundings for tight parking situations)
    • Blind-spot monitor (alerts you if a vehicle in the next lane over is in your blind spot)
    • Lane keeping assist (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane)
    • Automatic high beams
    • Driver attention monitor (issues an alert if sensors determine you are becoming fatigued)

F-Pace S
The F-Pace S comes standard with the P250 engine, but you can also opt for the P340 turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine (335 hp, 354 lb-ft). You also get:

  • Powered liftgate
  • Leather upholstery
  • Upgraded infotainment system with internet access and over-the-air updates
  • Traffic sign reader
  • Selectable drive modes and adaptive dampers (P340 only)

R-Dynamic S
The R-Dynamic S is also powered by the six-cylinder engine, but with increased output (395 hp, 405 lb-ft). Added features include:

  • Sporty exterior body elements
  • Interior R-Dynamic styling flourishes
  • Selectable drive modes
  • Adaptive suspension dampers (enhances ride comfort and handling)

SVR
The top-performing SVR F-Pace goes all-in with a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 (550 hp, 516 lb-ft). It also turns up the luxury and convenience quotient with:

  • Unique exterior body elements
  • 21-inch wheels
  • 14-way heated and cooled front sport seats
  • Faux suede and leather upholstery
  • Digital instrument panel
  • Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the vehicle and the car in front)
  • Head-up display (displays important information in your sight line onto the windshield)
  • 17-speaker Meridian surround-sound system
  • Hands-free liftgate
  • Heated windshield
  • Cooled glovebox
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Automated parking system (steers into a parking spot with little or no driver intervention)

1/5 stars, New virtual dashboard inconvenient and distracting
DJ,
SVR 4dr SUV AWD (5.0L 8cyl S/C 8A)
It's time to trade in my 2018 f-pace. Test drove an SVR, and loved the performance, but I hate what they have done to the Dashboard/controls. Part of the why I chose the f-pace in the first place was that they still had physical controls for the environmental/temp/volume. I don't want to have to navigate through 20 webpages while driving just to change the volume. both Inconvenient and unsafe. It's something you use every time you get in the car and it's inconvenient enough that I am now shopping around for a different brand. It's a shame because you can't beat that acceleration or handling, but at the end of the day, those are nice to have, and if the dash is not workable, it's just not practical .
5/5 stars, ONE HOT CAT‼️
Connie Steeper,
SVR 4dr SUV AWD (5.0L 8cyl S/C 8A)
Perfect FUN car to drive. Only one problem - Brembo racing brakes tend to “squeal”.

Jaguar F-Pace vs. the competition

2021 Jaguar F-Pace

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class

Jaguar F-Pace vs. Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class

The Jaguar F-Pace sits between small and midsize SUVs, but we're rounding up to the similarly priced midsize class. That pits it against the top-rated Mercedes-Benz GLE. The base GLE isn't as sporty as the F-Pace, but there are plenty of higher-performing AMG models that can compete. Prior to the F-Pace's 2021 refresh, the GLE easily outpaced it in every category. We expect that gulf to narrow with the improvements, but not enough to surpass the Benz.

Jaguar F-Pace vs. Porsche Cayenne

If you're considering an F-Pace for its entertaining driving dynamics, we'd also suggest taking a peek at the Porsche Cayenne. Not surprisingly, options can quickly push the Porsche's more expensive starting price out of control. If you're able to swing it, the Cayenne will reward you with a performance deserving of the Porsche name.

Jaguar F-Pace vs. BMW X5

In many ways, the BMW X5 splits the difference between the posh Mercedes GLE and sporty F-Pace. Properly equipped, the X5 is as exciting to drive as the Jag with equal or better levels of luxury and refinement. Both SUVs are also neck-and-neck when it comes to price, interior space and cargo capacity. Read Edmunds' long-term road test of the BMW X5.

2021 Jaguar F-PACE First Impressions

What is the F-Pace?

Since its introduction for the 2017 model year, the Jaguar F-Pace has proved itself to be a worthy pick for a midsize luxury SUV. In particular, we've enjoyed its sporty handling, powerful supercharged V6 engine and roomy cargo area. But it's also had some drawbacks, such as lackluster cabin quality and a frustrating-to-use infotainment interface. Now, for 2021, Jaguar has made some changes to fix these issues without diminishing the F-Pace's sporty character.

Inside and out, the 2021 F-Pace gets a mild makeover. The grille and headlights are subtly reshaped, and the interior gets improved materials. Also new is Jaguar's Pivi Pro infotainment system. Pivi Pro features an 11.4-inch curved touchscreen and promises quicker responses and improved graphics over the previous system. It can also support over-the-air software updates. The 2021 F-Pace's cabin should also be a bit quieter too, thanks to the inclusion of an active road noise cancellation system.

Replacing the outgoing supercharged V6 is a new turbocharged V6 augmented by an electric compressor. This new six-cylinder will be offered in two versions. The F-Pace P340 will make 335 horsepower, and the P400 will make 395 hp. The latter is a 15-hp increase over the previous V6. This new engine will also be a little more fuel-efficient and have a smooth-operating engine stop-start feature at stoplights thanks to a 48-volt starter-generator system. The F-Pace's 246-hp four-cylinder engine is unchanged and still available for 2021 as well.

EdmundsEdmunds says

As much as we've enjoyed the F-Pace for its graceful styling, sharp handling and large cargo space, its tech and refinement issues held it back from truly competing with the best two-row midsize luxury SUVs. The 2021 F-Pace's updates are welcome and should help boost its standing against the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE. We also think it'll be worth waiting for the 2021 model rather than picking up the 2020 F-Pace.

Should I lease or buy a 2021 Jaguar F-PACE?

Is it better to lease or buy a car? Ask most people and they'll probably tell you that car buying is the way to go. And from a financial perspective, it's true, provided you're willing to make higher monthly payments, pay off the loan in full and keep the car for a few years. Leasing, on the other hand, can be a less expensive option on a month-to-month basis. It's also good if you're someone who likes to drive a new car every three years or so.
