Beauty and practicality are so often mutually exclusive. And yet, every so often something comes along that manages to be both fun and sensible, capable of pulling at the heart strings while also satisfying that part of your brain where all your mother's good advice resides. The 2017 Jaguar F-Pace is a fun-to-drive SUV that also happens to be one of the most spacious, efficient and competitively priced competitors in the compact luxury segment.

Jaguar's primary goal when setting out to produce its first SUV was for it to be pretty. Mission accomplished, yet as a bit of length, wheelbase and ground clearance were added to achieve eye-pleasing proportions, the resulting vehicle ended up with more backseat legroom, cargo space and off-road-friendly ground clearance than most of its competitors.

The 2017 Jaguar F-Pace: prettier and more practical than most.

A secondary goal was for it to drive with the same verve as Jaguar's sedans and sports cars. Using the same mechanical bones as the XE and XF sport sedans as well as some F-Type inspiration, the F-Pace is indeed one of the most engaging SUVs in the class to drive. The sharp steering, ultra-rigid structure, impeccably composed suspension and rear-biased all-wheel-drive system are all worthy of praise. The ride may be a bit firm for some, however.

Backing those dynamic talents up are a pair of appealing engines. A supercharged V6 engine produces 340 horsepower (or 380 in the S model) at a price point where most competitors have turbocharged four-cylinders and 100 fewer horses. Acceleration is not surprisingly superior to most, as well, and comes attached to an F-Type-inspired boisterous exhaust note. For those with a desire to keep their fuel bills low, the 20d model features an efficient turbocharged diesel engine that joins the BMW X3 as the only other SUV in the segment to offer such an engine (the Audi Q5 TDI is discontinued due to the VW emissions scandal).

Inside, the cabin is tastefully designed, nicely adorned in quality materials and fitted with comfortable seats. New to Jaguar is an all-new InTouch Pro touchscreen interface with impressively quick responses, big virtual buttons and customizable menus. More testing is needed to render a full verdict compared to rival systems (the same goes for the lesser, standard InControl Touch interface), but our initial experiences were at least positive.

And indeed, that's how we feel in general about the 2017 Jaguar F-Pace. While additional experiences are certainly needed, we're confident in the accuracy of our early returns: It's one of the class leaders. The F-Pace effectively challenges the sort of dynamic driving experience offered by the Porsche Macan, the elegance of the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and the well-rounded nature of the BMW X3. And although it can't match the Acura RDX's value, it does tend to be cheaper when similarly priced than those aforementioned other rivals. Turns out beauty and practicality can actually co-exist.

We Recommend

Love all the F-Pace's virtues but care more about fuel economy than rapid acceleration? Get the 20d diesel. However, the supercharged V6 certainly represents the F-Pace at its best. With either engine, though, we would recommend the Prestige model, as it packs a healthy amount of equipment at a price that manages to better most competitors.

The Caesium Blue paint is special to the F-Pace First Edition, although it will be available on other trims as a special order.

Every 2017 F-Pace comes standard with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. A rearview camera and parking sensors are optional on the base model and standard on all others. Automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist are standard on the R-Sport and S. A blind-spot and reverse traffic warning system is also standard on those trims and optional on the Premium and Prestige.

Trim levels & features

The 2017 Jaguar F-Pace is a compact luxury SUV that seats five passengers. There are five trim levels: base, Premium, Prestige, R-Sport and S. All but the S are available with a choice of engine (specified 20d or 35t). There is also a loaded version of the S known as the First Edition, only 275 of which are bound for the United States.

The base F-Pace comes standard with all-wheel drive, 18-inch wheels, a power liftgate, cruise control, an automatic speed limiter, rear privacy glass, LED running lights, automatic wipers, keyless ignition and entry, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats, a 40/20/40-split folding rear seat, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, LuxTec simulated leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, InControl Protect emergency communication services, the InControl Touch 8-inch touchscreen electronics interface, Bluetooth phone and audio, and an 11-speaker Meridian sound system with a USB port, a media player interface, an auxiliary audio jack and a CD player. A rearview camera and satellite radio can be added separately.

The Premium adds 19-inch wheels, the rearview camera, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors and driver memory functions. The Vision package adds automatic bi-xenon headlamps with auto-leveling and washers, front and rear parking sensors, and a blind-spot warning system. Both the base and Premium F-Pace models can be bolstered with a Cold package that adds heated front and rear seats, a heated windshield and a heated steering wheel that features upgraded leather. They can also be equipped with a navigation system integrated into the InControl Touch system.

The F-Pace Prestige adds most of the above optional equipment plus front and rear parking sensors, the Cold package equipment, leather upholstery, four-way front seat power lumbar, a power-adjustable steering wheel, a folding rear armrest, voice controls and smartphone apps. It does not include the blind-spot warning system, which is instead included in the Prestige Vision package, which also includes adaptive LED headlamps.

The R-Sport adds 20-inch wheels, special styling elements, the Prestige's optional equipment, foglamps, lane-keeping assist, an automatic emergency braking system, automatic high beams, more aggressively bolstered front seats with power-adjustable thigh support, and a simulated leather-trimmed instrument panel.

The F-Pace S is similarly equipped but comes with 40 extra horsepower, an adaptive suspension (optional on the Prestige and R-Sport) and different styling elements.

The cabin is classy and well-constructed. The gauge cluster pictured is actually a display screen.

The Prestige, R-Sport and S can be equipped with the Comfort & Convenience package, which adds ventilated front seats, power-reclining rear seats, a remote release for the folding rear seats and a hands-free gesture-activated power liftgate. The Technology package adds a full LCD screen instrument cluster, 3G onboard WiFi, a 17-speaker Meridian surround-sound audio system, and a different, upgraded InControl Pro 10-inch touchscreen interface with configurable menu screens and improved functionality. They can also be equipped with a head-up display, roof rails and an "Activity Key" waterproof bracelet that allows you to unlock the car with the key still inside.

The R-Sport and S can be equipped with the Luxury Interior Upgrade package that includes four-zone automatic climate control, additional rear seat air vents, upgraded carpets and headliner, 10-color interior ambient lighting and a cooled glove compartment. The Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, speed limit notification, three additional parking cameras and an automatic parking system (parallel, perpendicular and exit). They can also be equipped with 22-inch wheels.

The First Edition includes every option possible plus special paint selections, houndstooth interior trim and upgraded leather upholstery with a special houndstooth embossment.

Every 2017 Jaguar F-Pace comes standard with all-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission, paddle shifters, hill-start assist and an automatic stop-start system. There are two engine choices.

The 35t AWD models have a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 that produces 340 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque in all trims except the S and First Edition, where it produces 380 hp. Torque is unchanged. Jaguar estimates that the base tune will result in a 0-60-mph time of 5.4 seconds, or 5.1 seconds with the S. Both would be among the quickest in the segment. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 20 mpg combined (18 city/23 highway). This is much lower than competitors that feature far less powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engines. It's about the same as the Macan S.

The 20d AWD models have a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline-4 that produces 180 hp and 318 lb-ft of torque. This is typical for such an engine. Jaguar estimates that it will go from zero to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds, which is slow but similar to the diesel-powered BMW X3. No EPA estimates were available at the time of this writing, but Jaguar estimates that it will be in the upper 20 mpg combined range.

The Jaguar F-Pace is surprisingly capable off the beaten path.


The 2017 F-Pace feels more like a sport sedan from behind the wheel than an SUV -- even when compared to the relatively sporty models with which it competes. It corners impressively flat, and nasty midcorner bumps are greeted with a resolutely rigid body structure and a suspension that remains perfectly composed. The all-wheel-drive system sends almost all of the power rearward under most conditions, creating the advantageous capability and feel of a rear-drive vehicle when cornering. And then there's the standout steering: light and consistent in its effort, high in feedback and sharp in its responses.

Under the hood, the 35t's supercharged V6 delivers a pleasing punch no matter the driving situation, along with a rather boisterous engine note that admittedly may get a bit tiresomely droney during normal driving. The 20d's diesel should feel strong enough around town or when in need of a sudden burst of highway passing power, but you'll notice its lack of power on an on-ramp.

With either engine, the standard all-wheel-drive system that so benefits handling, also proves its worth off the beaten path, sending power to the wheels that need it. In conjunction with that generous ground clearance and off-road tech borrowed from corporate cousin Land Rover, the F-Pace is able to tackle steep, slippery inclines, low-traction surfaces and rock-strewn trails to an extent that belies its sporty, on-road demeanor.

The one area of question is the ride. Our initial test occurred on roads that were either glass-smooth or Moon-rough, making it difficult to evaluate its comfort. We suspect, however, that some may find it uncomfortably firm -- especially with the 20- or 22-inch wheels.


The F-Pace cabin may not be as visually appealing as the exterior, but it's nevertheless tasteful and constructed of suitably quality materials. The climate controls are large, and the new InControl Pro touchscreen system (optional) features large virtual buttons, quick responses and crisp graphics. We need more time than was possible during our initial drive, however, and we also didn't experience the base InControl Touch system.

Up front, the F-Pace manages to blend the elevated view out expected of an SUV, with more of a low, carlike seating position. The seats themselves offer more than enough adjustability and resulting space even for taller drivers. The backseat, meanwhile, affords more legroom than most competitors do, even when one of those taller drivers is up front. Headroom isn't exactly copious, but our heads weren't grazing the roof either (even with the panoramic sunroof).

Cargo space is excellent for the segment, measuring 33.5 cubic feet with the seats raised (best in class) and a maximum capacity of 63.5 cubic feet (second only to Volvo XC60). This is mostly the result of its longer-than-usual depth. And for those who'll be using the cargo area or the roof to transport a surfboard, kayak or outdoor adventure items, you might be interested in the F-Pace's optional Activity Key: a waterproof Fitbit-like bracelet that when placed over the liftgate's Jaguar script unlocks the car, allowing you to leave the key locked in the car.

Cargo space with the seats raised is best in class. When lowered, only the Volvo XC60 is better.

20 D -180 hp much better than you think

we are from Montreal Canada and bought our 20D -R Sport about 3 weeks ago and made our usual drive from Montreal to Phoenix Arizona to stay the winter home. Having to order this SUV without driving the 20D was a bit scary after test driving the 35T--I thought the 180 HP would be underpowered --noisy and lack acceleration especially uphill. Wow--was I ever surprised with my very first diesel. The torque really does all the work effortlessly. It's plenty fast enough. Driving at speeds of 75-82 mpg---with 600 lbs of luggage in the back for 10-14 hours a day--we were getting 35-41mpg--pretty awesome. One time passing a car at 75 mpg the excelartion was so good that in a matter of seconds I was at 96mpg. Coming from Montreal where gas prices are between $4-5/ Gallon--the gas mileage was a factor in buying this car. I have been a Lexus RX and NX SUV owner for 17 years and needed a change-they were getting a little boring and their Navigation is so bad I carried a Garmin at all times--it would take me either the wrong way or out of my way many times--The Jag Navigation system was awesome and even told you to prepare to exit to the right or left --in 2 miles--giving you plenty of time to get in the proper lane--never missed an exit or panicked to get over quickly to exit. The Seats are so comfortable I would say they are equal to the Lexus RX and superior to the smaller NX--NEVER got a sore back or butt even after being in the car for 14 hours. The 14 ways adjustable seats are worth the option. The car handles flawlessly and you feel like you are driving the car with all 4 PAWS on the road--not driving a car that is on top of 4 wheels. I have seen and read almost every review on this car and the few little complaints that came up are non-issues--the window controls are up on top---not an issue--how often do you roll down your windows?? And it would spoil the design of the inside doors--then they would look like every other car.--The Standard Navigation is great and easy to use--no need to upgrade there. Plus my wife can use it and look for things while we drive where Lexus and many others block you out--(again the need for a Garmin in my Lexus so you don't have to stop) Base stereo at 380 watts is awesome--you don't need 825 watts. Some said the interior plastics looked cheap--I did not see any difference from Jag and the Lexus that would matter--if so--you cant see them anyway-Haven't tried the voice command yet--but I gave up trying with all my Lexus SUV'S --I have 5 of them over the years and none worked. The driving position is fantastic--you can see the front and sides of the car--this is the only SUV my wife can drive where she can actually see the front and sides--other SUV's--all she saw was glass out the front which makes it more difficult to judge distances when turning or parking.The 20D is very quiet and after driving Lexus for 17 years with quiet and comfort--you do want that in a Luxury car--so I prefer the 20d over the 35T--which is pretty noisy due to its extra power and exhaust system--it does sound sporty and is faster--but if you drive like that you will pay at the pumps and probably get a few extra tickets as well--we don't drive cars like that in the real world anyway---if you do--try the 20D is Dynamic Sports mode--it gives you plenty of pick up and a sporty drive. I do hope this car is as reliable as Lexus was to me--in 17 years and 5 different SUV's with Lexus--I went to the dealer only Once--for a rattle in the roof---that's why I kept buying them---just couldn't put up with their Navigation system with the Mouse and Finger pad---actually was pretty dangerous to use while driving for anything as it controlled stereo and other things---Touch System is the Jaguar I so much easier and faster-- at least your passenger can use it so you can keep your eyes on the road. Great job Jaguar---if it's as reliable as I am used to--I will be a customer for a long time.--
Good Looking and Fun to Drive, Poor Reliability
I had to order the F-Pace R-Sport from the factory in England because I couldn't find the options that I was looking for at the dealerships around my area. This R-Sport 2.0d has good looks, great torque, fun to drive and awesome gas mileage - 37 mpg in the city. I have not taken it on the highway yet, so I cannot comment on the highway mpg but I am sure it will be in the 40s mpg. The only issue I have with this good looking, nicely designed vehicle is RELIABILITY!! I have owned this vehicle for 2 months and I have already been to the dealership twice for repairs. I had a check engine light 1 month after I got this vehicle with odometer reading of only 560 miles. I took it to the dealership for the CEL warning to be reset. My understanding is that, they could not identify the cause of the problem, so I am not sure if the CEL is not going to appear again soon. At 930 miles, my A/C went out and will not cool, it just blew warm air from outside even though the computer indicated that the system is cooling. I again went in for service and the computer was reset and the A/C started working. Again, the source of the problem was not identified. The A/C has never functioned 100% since I received the vehicle, it will occasionally blow hot air for about 5 -10 seconds in the cooling mode. The service manage advised that I should still bring in the vehicle and leave it with them for a couples of days for them to properly fix the A/C problem. I like the JLR brand but I don't think I will be buying another Jaguar next time, unless if the reliability is significantly improved. For the Jaguar engineering team, I will say Good Looks alone will not make you sell more of these vehicles, you will have to drastically improve on the RELIABILITY. I saw a table of 2017 vehicles and their reliabilities and the Jaguar brand was almost close to the bottom of the list. JLR needs to hire some engineers from KIA to show them how to build reliable vehicles and with the good looks designs, JLR will then be a top class car manufacturing company.
Fuel Mizer
Unbelievable fuel economy; currently receiving 34mpg in town and 40mpg on highway at 70mph, computed against fuel receipts. Fuel economy continues to increase as miles accumulate, currently at 8500 miles. No cost option of 18" light weight rims and tires greatly improves ride with no effect on handling. Receives stares everywhere it is parked.Great handling in rural Tennessee mountains. No reliability issues to date. I hesitated to purchase but am totally satisfied and would do so again. Update at 16200 miles: vehicle continues to impress with fuel economy and cost of ownership. I’d buy it again in a heartbeat!

The F-Pace I own is 6 months old and the computer system has caused the entire car to go haywire (from the side view mirrors to the car not starting at all). The car is in shop for the 2nd time in a month. In addition, the roadside assistance kept me waiting for 3 hours.

SPEAKER 2: Right here we have the 2018 Audi Q5 which is all new, completely redesigned from the ground up, and the 2017 Jaguar F-Pace. We want to find out which one offers certain benefits to certain drivers. Let's go find out. SPEAKER 1: OK, let's start with performance. This is the 35t model, and of course that means it's a three liter supercharged V6. 340 horsepower, which is plenty. SPEAKER 2: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. SPEAKER 1: What does that Q5 have? SPEAKER 2: Less. SPEAKER 1: OK. [LAUGHTER] What I like about this V6 is that when you get into sport mode and you get on the throttle-- [ENGINE REVVING] Like, hey. SPEAKER 2: It sounds good. SPEAKER 1: It sounds like there's an engine. So performance, I think, is pretty strong with the F-Pace, especially this 35t model. It is fun to drive. It has some excitement to the experience from that exhaust sound, from the overall feel. And I think actually, like the sleek exterior design, even though you can't see it when you're driving, that adds to the experience. You know you're driving something that looks cool and has some sort of fun or excitement to it. [ENGINE ROARING] You've spent some time driving this, how's the power delivery from this turbo engine? SPEAKER 2: It's great. I mean, like every other turbo that's out there now, there's no lag, it doesn't exist anymore. There's a little bit of some low speed clumsiness here and there, but it's sporadic. Power is more than adequate for most drivers. If you need more, there's the SQ5 with a ton more power, I think 352 or 354 or something ridiculous like that. SPEAKER 1: More than plenty. You know what I don't hear? SPEAKER 2: What? SPEAKER 1: Engine. SPEAKER 2: Yeah, OK. So let's-- [ENGINE REVVING] That's a four cylinder. SPEAKER 1: Oh, it's not bad. SPEAKER 2: Yeah, but it's a four cylinder. SPEAKER 1: It's four cylinder, but it's not a drone-y four cylinder. SPEAKER 2: Right. SPEAKER 1: That's not bad. This is a fine riding SUV. It handles these corners really nicely, but sometimes I feel like it is a little firmer-- SPEAKER 2: It is, sure. SPEAKER 1: --than the comfort level I would want out of a luxury SUV. SPEAKER 2: Right, but I feel that a lot of people who might be looking at the Jaguar would be OK with it. I mean, it's certainly not an objectionable level. SPEAKER 1: No, and when you're buying a Jaguar you're accepting that hey, there's a trade off here. SPEAKER 2: Sure. I spent many hours driving this and never felt any seat fatigue. There's plenty of adjustments to make sure that, if you're tall or short, that it'll fit you well. The one thing that bothers me though, is ventilated seats aren't available until you get to the very top prestige trim. SPEAKER 1: Really? SPEAKER 2: Yeah. Ride quality though, I think it's got a good balance. It's not as smooth as some of the other luxury SUVs, but it handles really well. SPEAKER 1: I think from the passenger's seat it feels appropriate. I'm not blown away by comfort, but I'm not like disappointed by it either. It feels like what I would expect. The F-Pace's interior is-- I wouldn't say, you know, disappointing, but it lacks a certain richness or quality that you get out of like the Audi's and the Mercedes' of the world, right? SPEAKER 2: At this trim level. SPEAKER 1: Yes. SPEAKER 2: At the S level you have more leather, more kind of cool coverings that make it look more expensive and up-marketful. It is more expensive. SPEAKER 1: Yeah. SPEAKER 2: But the Audi, even in base form, they're using the same materials. SPEAKER 1: There's almost kind of a plainness through here, and it's not that it's bad, it's just like the other cars in the segment seem to do it a little bit better than this one. I do wish on that point though that this shifter didn't take up so much space in the center-- SPEAKER 2: Yeah. SPEAKER 1: --because it would be nice to have that, you know-- a shifter in today doesn't need to take up like half a foot of space. SPEAKER 2: No it doesn't. SPEAKER 1: It can be a stalk on the steering wheel, like you're not actually like-- let's not kid ourselves, we're not controlling any like mechanical components anymore, right? It's all electronic. SPEAKER 2: This knob is kind of cool. It's gnarled and it rises from the surface, and there's that little extra touch that kind of makes me happy. SPEAKER 1: It sort of matches the theatre that you want to have out of a luxury SUV. Like the light behind the start/stop button like pulsates when you get in, and this shifter like comes out, and yeah, they're gimmicks, but-- SPEAKER 2: But it makes you feel like there's something special going on that other cars don't have. I think the Q5 might be the class leader now-- SPEAKER 1: OK. SPEAKER 2: --and a lot of it has to do with what we're looking at right now, which is the interior. Look at these materials. I mean, it's premium stuff. Like this is really nice, everything has a nice feel and touch and look to it. I love the way they integrate all the tech. There's a ton of features and it's all easy to use. They have this yacht handle out of the A8-- SPEAKER 1: [LAUGHS] Yacht handle, I like-- SPEAKER 2: Actually what they used to call it. SPEAKER 1: I like yacht handle. SPEAKER 2: And you rest your elbow on the armrest, it goes over, your wrist is on the yacht handle, and it's right where the knob is to control the infotainment. SPEAKER 1: You kind of sealed the deal with yacht handle. SPEAKER 2: Yacht handle. SPEAKER 1: Yacht handle. SPEAKER 2: Mm-hmm. SPEAKER 1: Yeah. SPEAKER 2: Hashtag yacht handle. [LAUGHTER] The screen, even though when they first started putting them up there and looking like a tablet I was kind of opposed to it, but after some use and you realize that man, it's right in your sight line-- SPEAKER 1: Yeah. SPEAKER 2: I really like it. SPEAKER 1: I do kind of wish that the screen was a little bit more integrated into the dash. I get it why they do it like this, but it does kind of look like you've just stuck a phone or a tablet, and like just taped it to the dash. My initial impression going from the driver's seat of the F-Pace to the passenger's seat here is I sense the difference in size. This feels a little smaller, but at the same time it also feels a little airier inside. Here I feel like I have a lot more shoulder space and tons more headroom. Even if that's not true, that's my impression sitting here. We have nice features, we have heated seats, there's heated seats back there. This widescreen navigation system, entertainment system, is really responsive. Looks neat, but Android Auto isn't supported, Apple CarPlay support is apparently on the way. You look at other vehicles in this segment that offer those things or have cleaner displays or more functionality and you're like well, it's kind of a disappointment that this thing doesn't. What's that you're looking at right there? SPEAKER 2: The virtual instrument panel. I love these. SPEAKER 1: Yeah. SPEAKER 2: I really do. Audi has been putting it on almost everything. It's tack sharp, even when we're in direct sunlight it's really easy to read. It's semi customizable, so you go from one view to another and you can see a big nav map like this-- SPEAKER 1: Whoa, yeah. SPEAKER 2: You get a ton of information without really having to take your eyes off the road very much. I'm peeking down here and I'm still keeping a good reference of what's in front of us. When you don't have a touch screen in Apple CarPlay that means you have to use this knob to kind of scroll through all the little hotspots on the screen. There are some shortcuts, you can move the knob left, right, up, and down to kind of get to one section or another quickly, but it's not as intuitive as a touch screen. [ENGINE ROARING] So here we're in the backseat of the Q5. I'm running out of a little bit of headroom thanks to this sunroof rail, and I'm not getting a whole lot of thigh support further forward. But backseats you can't really expect too much, right? SPEAKER 1: I've got good knee room, I've got good headroom. I like the softness of the seats, even if the support might be a little lacking. I feel like the seat comfort is pretty decent. I feel like just back here there's less attention paid to the appearance overall, as you might expect, because most people sit in the front seat of these cars anyway, so why spend more money back here? But it does seem a bit more apparent in the Q5. SPEAKER 2: Yeah, and you kind of mentioned that it feels a little bit more like Volkswagen back here, and I'm kind of with you on that one. But on a road trip I think I'd be OK back here. SPEAKER 1: Totally. Welcome to my office. SPEAKER 2: It's a nice office. SPEAKER 1: Yeah. You know, the F-Pace's backseat, I feel like I have a little bit more space in every dimension, and I notice your-- SPEAKER 2: I am not brushing this. SPEAKER 1: --your wonderful hair is not touching the headrest. I feel like a bit more space, the seats are a little firmer, especially towards the center, there's like a-- SPEAKER 2: Crown. SPEAKER 1: Yeah. SPEAKER 2: Materials wise it feels just slightly better than the Q5, even though this center thing isn't all that attractive, either. But I do like that you have these little-- SPEAKER 1: The two USB ports and 12 volt, yeah. SPEAKER 2: --USB ports there that are covered as well. SPEAKER 1: I feel like from front to rear there's more consistency in terms of interior quality-- SPEAKER 2: Yes. SPEAKER 1: --where over in the Q5 it may be a more dramatic change. But the space back here is bigger because of course this is just a bigger vehicle, so it gets the advantage of that. SPEAKER 2: Yeah. SPEAKER 1: But it's nice having a bit more headroom back here. SPEAKER 2: Yeah. I'm not feeling quite as much shoulder room on the outboard, but that's such a nit picky little thing. SPEAKER 1: Want to know the upside? SPEAKER 2: Hmm? SPEAKER 1: Reclining seats. SPEAKER 2: Takes a bit of time to get there. SPEAKER 1: The Q5 doesn't have this though, so what's up? SPEAKER 2: OK, fine. Fine, fine. SPEAKER 1: No, I think anybody would be comfortable back here for a long time. SPEAKER 2: Yeah, and generally you're going to be putting smaller people back here. [ENGINE ROARING] SPEAKER 1: When comparing this to the Q5, we have to take into account that the F-Pace is a little bit bigger than most of the vehicles in this segment-- SPEAKER 2: Yes. SPEAKER 1: --and one of the ways that manifests is that this thing has decent cargo capacity and decent rear size space because it's slightly bigger. SPEAKER 2: I would actually go further and say exceptional for the class, because I had a-- ooh God, 74 inch flat pack cabinet-- SPEAKER 1: Yeah? SPEAKER 2: --that fit with, you know, the second row folded. And I didn't have to take it out of the box, I didn't have to leave the hatch open, it closed on it. It was shocking that it was that easy, so I give it really high marks for that. SPEAKER 1: I feel the F-Pace, I think, is the clear design winner here. SPEAKER 2: It's a very pretty car. SPEAKER 1: This has a very understated look, which isn't a bad thing. SPEAKER 2: That's Audi's character. SPEAKER 1: If I want to spend money on some S it should have that feel it's something nice. You don't need to be flashy-- SPEAKER 2: Right. SPEAKER 1: --to have that feel, but there does seem to be some elements of design that stand out, or at least give you that sense of worth. SPEAKER 2: This, like you said, is understated, but modern and kind of chiseled, and-- SPEAKER 1: Yeah. SPEAKER 2: --it's got the new Audi look. Which I'm not a big fan of the grill, everybody's doing these sharp trapezoidal grills. I want them to go away, but I like the way it looks. SPEAKER 1: An interesting thing happened to me yesterday as I was fueling this thing up, a guy actually walked up and said hey, cool Jag. Nobody would do that to a luxury SUV. You park any luxury SUV-- SPEAKER 2: Yeah, when was the last time someone said hey, nice X5. SPEAKER 1: [LAUGHS] Yeah, exactly. It doesn't happen, but it did with this F-Pace because this thing does a great job of standing out and having an identity that's more unique. We like the Jaguar F-Pace a lot, primarily because of how it looks, but also because of how it drives. It's a very emotionally appealing SUV, and that means it's a fairly easy car to recommend. SPEAKER 2: And the Q5 is as easy to recommend. I mean, the styling maybe isn't as sculpted and seductive as the Jag, but it's got some aggression and some chiseled lines, and I personally like it a lot. But it really gets high marks for the interior, the interior is impeccable. If I were choosing between the two it'd be a really tough choice, but I would just barely give it to the Audi. So that says you should really take your time in the test drive, really get to know the cars. Honestly I don't think there's a deal breaker with any of these. Jaguar's 2017 F-Pace is exceptionally pretty. After all, Jags are supposed to be exceptionally pretty. But this is the first Jaguar that's also a crossover SUV. The F-Pace has a true feline presence, with fenders that seem to muscle up over the tires and a face that is easy to imagine as a pouncing cat. The windshield is raked, the cabin glass swoops back to the tail, and the hood is dominated the power bulge that features on all Jags. It's a look that's instantly recognizable as a Jaguar.

Despite the rakish looks and sleek roofline, the F-Pace is sized for the mainstream of the crossover SUV market — it's not large, but not dinky, either. The interior design is nearly as fashionable as the exterior with exceptionally comfortable seats.

Jag offers five trim levels: base F-Pace, Premium, Prestige, R-Sport and S. The equipment levels and wheel diameters both grow in each subsequent trim level. Base power comes in the form of a 340-horsepower, 3.0-liter supercharged V6. With the F-Pace S, Jag fortifies that engine to the tune of 380 hp. Also optional is a turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel-powered four-cylinder, which gets a frugal 29 mpg in EPA-estimated combined driving.

All F-Paces come with standard all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. On the base trim, Jaguar provides a power liftgate, keyless ignition and entry, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats and an 8-inch touchscreen interface. The Premium is pretty similar, but the F-Pace Prestige adds a lot more including xenon headlights, a Cold Weather package and a navigation system. R-Sport and S top off the F-Pace range with special styling details, extra safety features, sport front seats and more.
